Report: Chiefs CB Bashaud Breeland arrested in South Carolina

Kansas City Chiefs CB Bashaud Breeland has found himself in a little bit of trouble with the law.

Kansas City Chiefs CB Bashaud Breeland has been arrested on a variety of charges in York County, South Carolina according to a new report from ESPN’s Adam Teicher.

The 28-year-old cornerback is currently is in county jail with no bond set. He has currently been charged with resisting arrest, having alcohol, beer or wine in a motor vehicle with the seal broken, possession of 28 grams or less of marijuana or 10 grams of hash, and driving a vehicle without a license.

Teicher reached out to the Chiefs for comment and while they are aware of the situation, they had no further comment on the matter. Breeland’s agent also did not respond after a request for comment.

Breeland re-signed with Kansas City on a one-year deal after testing the free-agent waters. He finished the 2019 season with  15 games started, recording 48 total tackles, two interceptions and eight passes defended. He was a starting CB for the Chiefs throughout the season and during Super Bowl LIV.

Chiefs secondary shaping up following Bashaud Breeland’s return

The secondary group looks very good for the Kansas City Chiefs as they head into the 2020 NFL Draft.

The Kansas City Chiefs secondary is starting to take shape for the 2020 NFL season.

On Thursday, reports broke that starting right cornerback Bashaud Breeland would re-sign with the team. He was the only remaining starter from Super Bowl LIV that was a free agent. Breeland’s return means that all of the starters in the secondary from 2019 will return for the 2020 NFL season. Bashaud Breeland and Charvarius Ward occupy the right and left cornerback spots, While Tyrann Mathieu and Juan Thornhill occupy the strong safety and free safety spots.

The Chiefs lost versatile defensive back, Kendall Fuller, in free agency to Washington. He’d previously been their starting nickel corner and late in the season played some deep safety for Kansas City, including in the Super Bowl. The Chiefs also don’t be too keen on re-signing Morris Claiborne, who remains a free agent.

Kansas City will return nickel linebacker and safety Daniel Sorensen, who figures to continue to fill those roles, as well as his role on special teams. Draft picks Armani Watts and Rashad Fenton will also return to the Chiefs. Fenton could be due for a larger role in sub-packages that require an extra cornerback on the field with his inside-out versatility.

Three players figure to compete for backup roles, those are Alex Brown, Chris Lammons and new free-agent acquisition Antonio Hamilton. Brown was elevated from the Chiefs’ practice squad ahead of Week 15 and appeared in six games for Kansas City, including Super Bowl LIV. He’s primarily been used as a special teams player. Lammons has starting experience from his time with the Dolphins and can play both safety and cornerback spots. Finally, Hamilton is a promising special teams player and could be first in line for a backup job behind either Breeland and Ward.

In any event, the Chiefs group is looking much more complete than it did just a day ago. Brett Veach doesn’t need to feel pressured into adding any defensive backs in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft. Breeland fills a big need and allows the luxury of selecting the best player available at pick No. 32. Cornerback still could be on the table for Kansas City at that pick or throughout the draft, especially when you consider that both Breeland and Ward are scheduled to become free agents in 2021.

Report: Chiefs to re-sign CB Bashaud Breeland

Breeland is coming back to Kansas City on a one-year deal.

The Kansas City Chiefs have re-signed a crucial piece from their 2019 Super Bowl-winning season.

According to a report from ESPN’s Rob Demovsky, the Chiefs will re-sign cornerback Bashaud Breeland on a one-year deal worth up to $4.5 million.

Breeland joined the Chiefs as a free agent acquisition in 2019 and quickly established himself as one of the most trusted cornerbacks on the team. Breeland would go on to start opposite Charvarius Ward throughout the season. He came up big for the Chiefs in several key moments with crucial interceptions and pass breakups, putting his stamp on the success of the defensive rebuild in Kansas City.

CB Bashaud Breeland returns to Kansas City on one-year, $4.5 million deal

Breeland was initially thought to be a free-agent target for the Redskins, but he will instead by returning to Kansas City.

Former Washington Redskins cornerback Bashaud Breeland is returning to the Kansas City Chiefs for the 2020 season after signing a one-year deal worth $4.5 million, according to ESPN’s Rob Demovsky.

Breeland, who won the Super Bowl with the Chiefs in 2019, was an expected free-agent target for the Redskins, as he played for them at the start of his career and only left a couple of years ago in free agency. The Redskins signed former Chief Kendall Fuller earlier this offseason, another player who played alongside Breeland in both Washington and Kansas City, so it seemed plausible that the team would try and keep that duo together once again.

However, after signing both Fuller and Ronald Darby, the Redskins had less of a need for yet another cornerback who would garner that type of attention, so it’s not too surprising to see Breeland stick around in KC and look to win another Super Bowl with the Chiefs.

Report: Washington uninterested in reunion with Chiefs free agent CB Bashaud Breeland

One potential landing spot for Kansas City Chiefs free agent CB Bashaud Breeland has been eliminated, for now.

The Kansas City Chiefs still have a handful of free agents available on the open market.

One of the most prominent players is CB Bashaud Breeland, who locked down the right side of the defensive secondary for the 2019 season. The Chiefs have expressed interest in retaining as many of their free agents as possible and Breeland is no exception. The team has remained in contact and are open to his return at the right price.

Breeland, of course, was hoping to have a strong free-agent market after playing extremely well for the Super Bowl champions. So far, there hasn’t been as much interest and traction as expected.

On Wednesday, we learned that one potential landing spot for Breeland is out of the running, at least for the time being. According to ESPN staff writer John Keim, there won’t be any reunions between Breeland and the Washington Redskins right now. Keim claims that later in the free agency process they could be interested, but that would almost certainly be on a short-term deal.

Washington made sense as a landing spot for Breeland for a variety of reasons. He was originally drafted by the Skins in the fourth round of the 2014 NFL draft. Additionally, Washington recently traded CB Quinton Dunbar to the Seattle Seahawks. They have a clear need at the cornerback position, even after signing Kendall Fuller, who also was drafted by the Skins and played for the Chiefs in 2019.

Breeland is rightfully seeking to earn a long-term contract. He was set to sign a long-term deal with the Carolina Panthers in 2018 but they failed his physical and he’s been bouncing around the league on one-year deals ever since. As long-term opportunities and finances thin around the league, there could be a chance to re-sign Breeland to a multi-year deal that keeps him in Kansas City.

Report: Redskins may pass on CB James Bradberry for cheaper options in free agency

Bradberry is expected to receive top dollar this offseason, which could cause the Redskins to look elsewhere for a CB.

We know that the Washington Redskins plan to be major players when it comes to acquiring a new cornerback or two, in this year’s free agency market, but the question is who they choose to go after.

Up until now, the common thought was that Carolina Panthers CB James Bradberry would make the leap to Washington once March 18th rolled around, following his old coach Ron Rivera to the Redskins. However, that idea has soured a bit over the last week, with reports surfacing that Bradberry is hoping to receive up to $15 million per season, resetting the CB market, even though he wasn’t a top CB in 2019.

It’s unlikely that the Redskins pay that type of money, even if the player has close ties to their head coach.

This would lead to the idea that the Redskins could instead look to sign two valuable corners, both of whom would act as less of a cap hit. The first two names that come to mind should be familiar to Washington fans.

Kendall Fuller and Bashaud Breeland; both are fresh off a Super Bowl win with the Kansas City Chiefs, and both left Washington on less-than-perfect terms in years past — Fuller was dealt as part of the trade for Alex Smith, and Breeland was allowed to walk as a free agent, despite having a solid fanbase with the Redskins.

There are obviously several more CBs that the Redskins could take a look at, but if their goal is to find two solid pieces instead of one, getting the old band back together might be a good place to start.

Would Redskins reuniting with Bashaud Breeland make sense?

The Redskins could use some depth in the secondary.

The Washington Redskins could use some depth in the secondary after the release of Josh Norman.

Why not call old friend Bashaud Breeland?

Breeland, a fourth-round pick by the Redskins in 2014, played out his contract with the team and then went elsewhere, suggesting he never had an offer to return.

Breeland played one season with Green Bay, then went to Kansas City and won a title — notching an interception in the Super Bowl.

The veteran was steady in 2019 with the champs, playing 82 percent of the defense’s snaps and allowing a completion percentage of just 48.4 on 62 targets, though he was charged with five touchdowns.

Meaning, Breeland is probably going to be affordable and on a cheap deal. There’s always this comparison to consider, too:

If the Redskins want some veteran depth who won’t get thrown to the wolves and asked to start, Breeland could make for an interesting option.

Texans 2020 NFL free agency target: Chiefs CB Bashaud Breeland

The Houston Texans should consider Kansas City Chiefs cornerback Bashaud Breeland as part of their plans to address the position in free agency.

Kansas City Chiefs cornerback Bashaud Breeland may hit free agency when the new NFL year starts on March 18, and the Houston Texans ought to consider him in their plans to address the cornerback position.

Breeland made the media rounds on Wednesday. While the former 2014 fourth-round pick from Clemson would love to stay with the Super Bowl champions, ultimately, Breeland desires to be with a team that needs him, wants him, and that he can elevate.

“I would love to continue on this journey with the Chiefs,” Breeland told “The SiriusXM Blitz” on SiriusXM NFL Radio. “I feel like they’ve got something special and I would love to be a part of it. I’m thankful for the opportunity that they allowed me to come in and be a part of an organization that allowed me to grow. When it comes to free agency I just want to be somewhere I’m needed and wanted. And where I can help bring the team to a winning stature.”

The Texans fit the bill of a team that could use Breeland. With starting cornerbacks Johnathan Joseph and Bradley Roby set to hit free agency, the two-time AFC South champions will have to rely on veterans Gareon Conley and Vernon Hargreaves to start with 2019 second-round pick Lonnie Johnson backing them up.

Breeland spent the first four seasons of his career in Washington before he joined the Green Bay Packers during the 2018 regular season. The Chiefs gave Breeland a one-year contract during 2019 free agency, and he contributed to Kansas City’s championship effort with two interceptions, eight pass breakups, two fumble recoveries, one returned for a touchdown, 48 tackles, and a tackle for loss in his 16 games, 15 of which he started.

At 5-11, 195 pounds, Breeland would be of comparable size to Roby and Joseph, both of whom are 5-11 while the former is a pound lighter and the latter is 10 pounds lighter.

The Texans will have decisions to make with regards to cornerback. If they decide to look outside the organization for help, Breeland could be a contributor.

Chiefs CB Bashaud Breeland on media tour ahead of free agency

Kansas City Chiefs CB Bashaud Breeland did spots on NFL Network’s “Good Morning Football” and “The SiriusXM Blitz” on NFL Radio today.

Kansas City Chiefs CB Bashaud Breeland is on a media tour this Wednesday, making the rounds in New York for in-studio appearances on various NFL media platforms.

The Chiefs signed Breeland in 2019, which came a year after a strange courting process. He was set to sign a long-term extension with the Carolina Panthers in 2018 but they failed his physical. He eventually found his way to a visit to St. Joseph for Chiefs’ training camp but failed to sign a contract with Kansas City. He’d later join the Green Bay Packers on a one-year deal for the remainder of 2018.

After signing with the Chiefs in 2019, Breeland played a big role in the Super Bowl LIV championship run and become one of the most trust corners on Steve Spagnuolo’s defense. Now, Breeland is a pending unrestricted free agent for the Chiefs in 2020. And from the looks of his media tour, he doesn’t expect to be back in Kansas City for 2019.

Early this morning, Breeland joined NFL Network’s “Good Morning Football.” During the show, Breeland spoke about the Super Bowl championship and he also made a case for why teams should be looking to sign him this offseason.

Later, Breeland would join “The SiriusXM Blitz” with Bruce Murray and Bruce Gradkowski on NFL radio.

“I just wanted to put a face out there with a name,” Breeland said of his media tour in New York.

Murray and Gradkowski both marveled at Breeland’s Super Bowl performance, citing PFF grades and asking him about his interception. He credited Chris Jones and Mike Pennel for getting to Garoppolo and claimed he was simply doing his job by playing his leverage. Eventually, they got down to brass tax and asked Breeland about his expectations in free agency.

“I would love to continue on this journey with the Chiefs,” Breeland said.

Breeland has been on a road well-traveled in the NFL. He spent four years in Washington out of college and a year in Green Bay before landing in Kansas City on the one-year deal. He bet on himself and now he’s looking to reclaim what he feels he lost when he missed out on the long term deal with Carolina in 2018.

“I had my opportunity at one point and it kind of slipped away from me,” Breeland said. “I kept my head down and stayed down until it was time for me to come back up. I had an opportunity to come [to Kansas City] and reset the market for myself. I took a prove-it deal after the injury. Now I just want to be compensated for what I am worth.”

Knowing that a long term contract is something that Breeland is seeking out, he was asked if the front office approached him about an extension?

“Not previously,” Breeland said. “I’ll leave that to my agent. I’m really not focused on negotiation and anything of that nature at this point. I’m just focusing on me, my family and enjoying this offseason while I can until I’m ready to go again.”

It’s still possible that the Chiefs could come to the table, but given the other priorities they’ll have during this free agency period, Breeland could be on his way out of Kansas City after just one season.

A pair of former Redskins were some of Super Bowl’s highest-graded players

Two former Redskins players lit it up in the big game.

Washington Redskins fans watching the Super Bowl where the Kansas City Chiefs took down the San Francisco 49ers might have noticed that two former members of the team put up big plays.

Those former Redskins would be defensive backs Kendall Fuller and Bashaud Breeland.

Both Chiefs defensive backs picked off 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo and those critical plays made them two of the big game’s highest-graded players at Pro Football Focus.

Breeland, a guy the Redskins let walk in free agency a few years back, has carved out a nice role for himself in Kansas City. Fuller, of course, was a trade piece in the Alex Smith trade.

Funnily enough, corner continues to be an issue for the Redskins as they face some questions at the position this offseason thanks to the likes of Josh Norman.

Both of these guys happen to be free agents this year.
