Gators News: Slow days for Florida sports features baseball, soccer

Things have settled down for Gators sports with just the soccer team in action yesterday and the baseball team taking the field tonight.

Today is Tuesday, which means the weekend is well in the rearview mirror and the week ahead is one day shorter. It also means that things have settled down for Gators sports with just the soccer team in action yesterday and the baseball team taking the field tonight. Let us take a look at those two athletic programs.

Florida baseball swept by South Carolina for the first time since 2006

The Gators’ pitchers struggled tremendously as the South Carolina Gamecocks swept them for the first time since 2006.

The Gamecocks had already clinched their first series win over Florida since 2011 with a Game 2 win on Saturday, and they added insult to injury in Game 3 on Sunday.

Trying to avoid a sweep, the Gators came up short and were defeated in all three games by South Carolina for the first time since the 2006 season. In the final game of the series, Florida’s pitchers struggled as USC held on for an 8-5 win despite a late rally attempt from Florida.

The first inning went by without either UF’s Hunter Barco or South Carolina’s Will Sanders allowing a hit. The bats started to get hot in the second inning, though.

It was the Gators that managed to grab the early lead off a homer in the second from Sterlin Thompson, but Sanders only allowed one more hit the rest of the way, giving up just two hits and three runs (two earned) in four innings as he earned his fourth win of the season.

Meanwhile, Barco quickly lost control of the game in the bottom of the frame. He allowed back-to-back home runs to lead off the inning and then a third later in the inning. In the third inning, the Gamecocks crushed a fourth homer off Barco and led 4-1.

The Gators got a run back in the fourth with their second homer of the day, this time from Kirby McMullen, and it scored two runs to bring the game within one. Barco managed to somewhat salvage the terrible start, getting through five innings without allowing additional damage, but he still gave up six hits and four earned runs in five innings of work to take his second loss of the season.

Ben Specht entered for Florida in the sixth looking to lead a comeback, but after he gave up a two-RBI double and two-run homer in the frame, the Gators found themselves down five runs.

UF attempted a minor rally in the eighth inning, and it managed to score a pair of runs off a double from Nate Hickey, but McMullen struck out the next at-bat, ending the threat and stranding a runner on base. In the ninth, Kris Armstrong managed to hit a two-out single, but Josh Rivera popped it up to right field the next at-bat, sealing a series sweep for South Carolina.

The Gators can likely say goodbye to their top-10 ranking, and they will try to right a 3-3 start to conference play in their home series against Ole Miss next weekend. First, UF has a Tuesday night midweek game against Mercer at Florida Ballpark. First pitch for that one is set for 6 p.m. EDT.

Watch: Cole’s walk-off beats No. 6 Louisville

Walk it off, AGAIN!

For the second time in as many weekend home series as there have been, Ryan Cole walked things off with a home run on Saturday as No. 14 Notre Dame outdid No. 6 Louisville, 5-3.

Cole also had a walk-off home run, his first career homer with the Irish, in the Friday opener against Duke last weekend before also hitting an inside-the-park home run the following day.

The walk-off helped Notre Dame pick up their first win against the Cardinals since 2011.

Notre Dame is now 11-4 overall in 2021 with a 10-4 mark in ACC play.  They sit just behind Louisville (16-6, 8-3) in ACC play.

The rubber-match of the three-game series takes place Sunday afternoon at Notre Dame.

Florida baseball drops series to South Carolina in low-scoring Game 2

The Gamecocks won their first series against the Gators since 2011 with a dominant defensive performance on Saturday in Game 2.

Though Florida and South Carolina combined for 29 hits and 17 runs in an exciting Game 1 that went 14 innings, Saturday’s Game 2 was a much more defensive affair. Both teams lineups struggled to bring runs across at times, but the Gamecocks managed a big fifth inning offensively, and their starting pitcher Brannon Jordan tossed seven fantastic frames as USC took a 4-1 win to hand the Gators their first SEC series loss of the season.

With the win, South Carolina secures its first series victory over Florida since 2011.

Both Jordan and UF starter Jack Leftwich managed to avoid any runs in the first inning (though Leftwich allowed one hit), but Florida managed some offense in the second inning. Sterlin Thompson hit a single off Jordan, and Kris Armstrong followed it up with a double that brought him home, giving the Gators an early 1-0 lead.

The Gamecocks couldn’t match them in the second or third innings, though they stranded five on base between them, but they finally found their rhythm in the fifth. After Leftwich allowed a double and a walk earlier in the inning, USC’s Wes Clarke homered off him to score three runs and take the lead.

After hitting two batters with pitches, Leftwich’s day came to an end, and Franco Aleman got Florida out of the inning without any more damage. Leftwich took his first loss on the season, allowing four hits and three runs in just 4.2 innings of action. He also hit six batters with pitches.

Meanwhile, Jordan only allowed one more hit the rest of the afternoon, finishing his performance with five hits and one run in seven full innings. For his part, Aleman performed well, not allowing any hits while striking out three.

But Florida replaced him with Trey Van Der Weide at the top of the eighth, and he only lasted two batters. A fielding error and a sacrifice put a South Carolina baserunner in scoring position, and Brandon Sproat gave up a single on his first at-bat to bring the runner to third. After a sac-fly from the next batter, the Gamecocks scored an insurance run that didn’t count against Sproat.

The Gators couldn’t get much going in the top of the ninth, as South Carolina closer Brent Kerry (who earned his second save on the season) struck out the first two batters. With two outs, Thompson cracked one to deep center, but it was caught near the warning track.

Winning the series might be out of the question now, but UF will try to bounce back on Sunday and avoid the sweep in Game 3, which starts at noon EDT.

Irish fall to Louisville as pair of top-15 open series

The Irish fell but their superstar slugger stayed hot.

The 12th-ranked Notre Dame baseball team fell to No. 6 Louisville on Friday as the two squads opened their weekend series.

After taking a 1-0 first-inning lead, the Irish surrendered five-straight runs to the Cardinals and were stuck playing from behind the rest of the afternoon.

Niko Kavadas had a pair more of RBI for Notre Dame as he worked a bases-loaded walk in the fifth inning, and hit his tenth home run of the season, a solo shot in the eighth inning that brought the score to 5-4.

The home run was Kavadas’s 34th of his career, tying him for the sixth-most in Notre Dame history.

The Cardinals were able to score a pair more runs in the top of the ninth inning however and the Irish couldn’t mount a ninth-inning rally.

John Michael Bertrand takes the mound for Notre Dame on Saturday as the Irish look to even up the series against one of the nation’s best.

Series Preview: Gators travel to take on South Carolina Gamecocks

Florida won the last meeting in 2019 with South Carolina and has been the victor in six of the last nine tangles between the two schools.

The fifth-ranked Florida baseball team is back in action this weekend after a five-day layoff. The Gators swept the Texas A&M Aggies at home last weekend to open their Southeastern Conference schedule and now hit the road to take on the No. 25 South Carolina Gamecocks looking to continue their winning ways.

The Gamecocks started the season off on fire, winning their first 11 games before the No. 19 Texas Longhorns swept them in a three-game series which started a six-game skid. USC snapped that losing streak with a win over the No. 2 Vanderbilt Commodores — handing Vandy just their third loss this season — to prevent another series sweep. They also won a midweek matchup with The Citadel on Tuesday to give them two victories in a row coming into the weekend.

Historically, the teams are almost dead-even with Florida holding the narrowest of edges with a record of 48-47 since the teams first played way back in 1919. South Carolina won seven of the first nine meetings and 11 of the first 15 before the Gators went on a seven-game run from 1994 to 1998; UF would also have another seven-game winning streak from 2014 to 2016. USC, however, has never won more than four in a row in the series.

The Gators won the last meeting in 2019 and have been the victors in six of the last nine tangles between the two schools. They appear to be the superior team entering the series, but you never can tell when it comes to intra-conference competition.

Here is a look below at the starting pitchers lined up for this weekend’s series along with the projected starting lineup. Scroll down further for interesting excerpts from the media guide.

Gators News: Florida athletics still sports 13 top-25 teams heading into the weekend

The weekend is nearly upon us as we have successfully reached another Friday with plenty to be excited about these days in the Gator Nation.

The weekend is nearly upon us! We have successfully reached another Friday, and boy oh boy, is there plenty to be excited about these days in the Gator Nation. The university maintained its baker’s dozen tally when it comes to athletic programs in their respective top 25 rankings this week — yes, a whopping 13 teams are among the best in the nation at their sport. Not too shabby.

There is plenty to cover today — nine teams in total — so let us dive right in!

This Florida baseball player earned Co-SEC Player of the Week honors

Jud Fabian not only swung the bat well but also provided a highlight-reel catch to rob a home run on Friday, earning him this week’s award.

The fifth-ranked Florida Gators baseball team got back on the winning track in sweeping fashion this weekend taking all three games at home from the visiting Texas A&M Aggies. UF managed to win the first trio of games on its Southeastern Conference schedule thanks to some superb pitching as well as some offensive outbursts.

One of the biggest reasons for Florida’s success against TAMU was sophomore centerfielder Jud Fabian, who not only swung the bat well but also provided a highlight-reel catch to rob the Aggies of a home run on Friday, hilariously losing his shoe in the process.

For his efforts, the conference named the potential MLB first-round draft pick its Co-Player of the Week, sharing the honor with the Arkansas Razorbacks’ Casey Opitz. Here is what the press release had to say about Fabian’s accolade.

Co-Player of the Week: Jud Fabian, Florida
Florida’s Jud Fabian recorded two more home runs during Florida’s homestand against Texas A&M. He scored four runs and had four RBI to help lead the Gators to a sweep. Fabian also made a key defensive play in the series to rob the Aggies of a home run. He had three hits in the series finale.

Florida is off until this weekend when they open up a three-game series at the South Carolina Gamecocks. Friday night’s first pitch is slated for 7 p.m. EDT and all three games will be broadcast on the SEC Network.

Gators News: Three Florida teams sweep this weekend and other recaps

Three teams swept their series over the past few days, including the baseball team who took three-straight games in their SEC opener.

The Monday morning March Madness hangover is here after a heart-breaking loss for the men’s basketball team in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, but the good news is that overall the Gator Nation had a heck of a weekend in competition. Three teams swept their series over the past few days, including the baseball team who took three-straight games in the Southeastern Conference opener.

There is plenty more where that came from, so let us look at what the past weekend had to offer for Florida sports.

Make it 7 straight wins for Notre Dame baseball

Don’t look now but a certain school is sitting well-atop the ACC standings…

Make it a perfect four-for-four in terms of series wins for Notre Dame baseball this season as the Irish used a five-run sixth inning on Saturday to clinch the weekend series with Duke.

Trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth, Niko Kavadas hit his third home run in as many games and seventh on the season to put Notre Dame in front, 4-2.

A few batters later it was Friday night’s hero, Ryan Cole, hitting an inside-the-park home run to stretch Notre Dame’s lead to 6-2.

John Michael Bertrand did the rest, pitching a complete game and surrendering just two runs, and mostly scattering five hits throughout.

The win was Notre Dame’s seventh in a row and puts them atop the ACC at 9-2 overall.

You can watch the Irish go for the sweep on Sunday afternoon as they wrap their home-opening series with Duke at 2 p.m. ET on ACC Network.
