Series Preview: No. 15 Florida baseball battles Auburn Tigers on the road

Here is a look below at the starting pitchers lined up for this weekend’s series along with the projected starting lineup for UF vs AU.

The No. 15 Florida Gators (26-11, 9-6 SEC) enter the three-game weekend series with its conference rivals the Auburn Tigers (16-18, 2-13 SEC) riding a six-game winning streak, including a four-game run against SEC foes. UF swept last weekend’s series against the Missouri Tigers at home and looks to replicate those results on the road this time around.

The Tigers have struggled mightily this season in conference play, with its only two victories coming against the Texas A&M Aggies back on February 28 and the Alabama Crimson Tide on April 16. Interestingly, the latter kicked off a stretch of improved play that saw Auburn go 3-3, including a pair of wins entering this weekend’s series.

Historically, AU holds the upper hand with a 133-117-2 all-time record including a 78-45-1 record at home. The two teams have not met since UF’s 2018 Super Regional series win in Gainesville and the Gators have won five of the past seven meetings. Despite the discrepancy in the all-time record, Florida has a 39-21 lead since 1996.

Irish set for three at Boston College

Irish fans thinking sweep at Boston College this weekend?

Notre Dame remains in quite the race atop the ACC Coastal Division standings with Louisville as the two boost nearly identical winning percentages in conference play with the Cardinals holding a slight edge in the department, from .700 to .696.

This weekend doesn’t just present a winnable series for Notre Dame, but a potentially sweepable one as the Irish are at Boston College for three games this weekend and the Eagles have gone just 5-16 in ACC play to date and have lost 12 of their last 15.

Meanwhile the Irish have been outstanding away from home this season as they’ve compiled a 9-3 record away from Eck Stadium.

Golden Eagles centerfielder Sal Frelick is a name to watch this weekend as he’s compiled the second-most hits in the ACC so far this season.

One statistic to especially note is Boston College’s pitching struggles as their team ERA of 6.48 is the worst by over a full run in the ACC this season.

The action gets underway Friday evening at Boston College as the Irish and Eagles meet at 5:30 p.m. ET.  Saturday’s first pitch comes at 3 p.m. ET while Sunday’s series finale gets started at 12 p.m. ET.

You can watch all three games on ACC Network Extra.

Vols’ signee returns to lineup for Farragut

Farragut senior and UT signee Angus Pence returns to lineup after injury.

A University of Tennessee baseball signee has returned to his high school team’s lineup after missing several games due to injury.

Farragut High School shortstop Angus Pence, who was injured in the Admirals’, 13-12, District 4-AAA loss to rival Hardin Valley Academy on April 6, had a big game Wednesday. Farragut notched a 7-6 victory over William Blount.

Pence went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored in the Admirals’ hard-fought victory over the Governors.

The future Vol made his return Tuesday night as Farragut (25-2, 10-1 District 4-AAA) defeated Lenoir City, 8-2, at John Heatherly Field.

Pence pitched two innings of relief against the Panthers. He allowed two runs, four hits, one walk and recorded four strikeouts.

Gators News: Men’s golf and tennis, women’s golf kick off SEC tournaments

It is humpday and the middle of the week this time around brings us a trio of teams competing in their respective SEC championships.

It is humpday and the middle of the week this time around brings us a trio of teams competing in their respective SEC championships, with the top-ranked men’s tennis team leading the way. The baseball team was also successful last night and the softball team looks to match that success today. Here is a loot at what is happening around the Gator Nation.

Florida baseball overcomes poor pitching to beat Jacksonville

Jacksonville stuck with the Gators every step of the way, but UF managed to take a one-run win over the Dolphins on the road.

Florida’s bullpen has been one of its biggest weaknesses all season, especially in midweek games. These struggles reared their head in a midweek game at Jacksonville on Tuesday night, but after a big offensive game in which the Gators out-hit the Dolphins 12-5, it escaped with a slim 8-7 win.

Freshman pitcher Timmy Manning started the game for the Gators, and he ran into trouble in the first inning. He gave up a single to the leadoff batter, and after another single and a walk, the bases were loaded with just one out. He then gave up his third hit of the inning, a three-RBI double that put UF in an early hole.

(function (d, s, n) {
var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];
js = d.createElement(s);
js.className = n;
js.src = “//player.ex.co/player/e5869bc6-faf6-4b7a-8c06-b5610c96a8fe”;
fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs);
}(document, ‘script’, ‘exco-player’));

Florida quickly attempted to cut into that lead, as Jud Fabian led off the second with a single, and a two-run homer from Sterlin Thompson cut the Dolphins’ lead to one. The Gators captured the lead in the third inning off a two-RBI single from Colby Halter to make the score 4-3. Another RBI single from Cory Acton later in the inning stretched the lead to two runs.

Manning was replaced after 2 2/3 innings by Ben Specht, who allowed a walk and a hit-by-pitch in the fourth. His night then came to an end in favor of Brandon Sproat, who immediately gave up a two-RBI double that tied the game.

Still, UF managed to respond. Halter and Acton led off the fifth with doubles, which brought a run across, and it added another when a double from Nate Hickey scored Acton. But in a back-and-forth game, the Dolphins refused to go away quietly.

Sproat walked two batters to start the bottom of the fifth, and coach Kevin O’Sullivan subbed in David Luethje on the mound. But Luethje walked two more batters, the latter scored a run to cut the lead to 7-6. Trey Van Der Weide entered to try to save the lead, and he started off with a fielder’s choice that resulted in a throwout at home. But he followed it up with a hit-by-pitch, bringing the tying run across.

After a quiet sixth inning, UF put two on after a Jacob Young walk and a single from Hickey. A sacrifice groundout from Kirby McMullen retook the lead, though the inning ended with the Gators only up one run.

Van Der Weide got through the seventh cleanly, as did Ryan Cabarcas in the eighth. JU had one more chance in the ninth inning, and though it started out with two outs from Cabarcas, he walked the third batter, putting the winning run at the plate. O’Sullivan decided to replace him with Jordan Carrion, who threw just one pitch to close out the game with a groundout.

With a dicey midweek win in the books, Florida can focus on its upcoming SEC series at Auburn, who is just 2-13 in SEC play. Game 1 is set for Friday night at 7 p.m. EDT.

Baseball Preview: Gators travel to take on Jacksonville Dolphins

Here is a look below at the starting pitchers lined up and details on how to follow along, as well as the projected starting lineup.

The No. 15 Florida Gators (25-11, 9-6 SEC) head east on Tuesday to face the Jacksonville Dolphins (7-22, 0-9 ASC) for a midweek matchup between the two intrastate foes. The schools met earlier in the year for a three-game set in Gainesville and this game represents the final faceoff for them this season.

It has been a rough year for JU, who have struggled to get into the win column consistently and have failed to defeat a fellow Atlantic Sun Conference opponent so far. It has lost 12 of its past 14 games including the last four straight and simply has not been able to find a way to get things going.

UF holds a firm grip on the all-time series with a record of 63-34 since the two schools first met in 1963. The Gators took seven of the first ten meetings, and in the intervening years since have consistently held the upper hand, with a longest winning streak of seven games — which came from 1971 to 1974 — and only a three-game losing streak in 1995. When the two teams met earlier this season in Gainesville, Florida won two out of three in the series, dropping the opening game 10-9 while taking the final pair that weekend.

Gators News: Volleyball’s title run ends, baseball on tap tonight

As we dig into another week things have quieted down for Gators sports, with just one program in action both yesterday and today.

Today is Tuesday and as we dig into another week things have quieted down for Gators sports, with just one program in action both yesterday and today. The bad news is that the volleyball team came up short in their regional final game against a No. 1 seed but the baseball team has a chance to put a smile on its fans’ faces when it heads to Jacksonville tonight. Here is a look at the details.

Gators take both legs of Saturday doubleheader against Missouri, sweep the series

UF won both games of a Saturday doubleheader against Missouri to take a sweep in the weekend series, its first since the conference opener.

With inclement weather threatening baseball all weekend, Florida made the proactive decision to move Sunday’s Game 3 against Missouri up to Saturday. Despite playing three nine-inning games in less than 24 hours, Florida followed up an exciting win in Game 1 with wins in both doubleheader games against the Tigers.

In Game 2, UF recovered from an early hole to take an 8-6 win, while in Game 3, it was in control most of the way in a 5-2 victory. With the series sweep of Mizzou (11-23, 4-11 SEC), Florida (25-11, 9-6 SEC) is back on the right side of .500 in conference play. Here’s what went down in the two contests on Saturday.

Watch the Twins’ Willians Astudillo throw a 46 MPH pitch for a strike

Willians Astudillo is a certified pitcher now

Willians Astudillo can do it all for the Twins. He primarily plays catcher, but he’s also seen time at both first and second base already this season for the Twins.

Apparently, I guess, he’s a pitcher, too. With the Twins down 10-3 to the Angels on Friday, they called upon Astudillo to pull them through a couple of innings. Might as well, right? Things can’t get any worse.

So he took the mound. And he tossed a pitch at 46 miles per hour. And…it worked.

That’s right. A 46 MPH pitch somehow made it past the plate in a Major League Baseball game. Unbelievable.

That’s not all, though. He actually threw a perfect 1-2-3 inning on seven pitches. That’s…pretty great! Especially for a position player.

And look at how slick this fastball is. It’s pretty remarkable.

Just incredible stuff from La Tortuga. This is the best.
