Richy Werenski earns spot in PGA Championship with win at Barracuda Championship

Richy Werenski, in his 100th start on the PGA Tour, nabbed the first win of his career on Sunday at the Barracuda Championship.

Richy Werenski, in his 100th start on the PGA Tour, nabbed the first win of his career on Sunday at the Barracuda Championship, the only tournament to use the Modified Stableford scoring format.

Werenski tallied 39 points, including 11 on his last seven holes, to leap to the top of the leaderboard.

Troy Merritt had a 30-footer on the 18th that would have won it but it came up short. He finished at 38 points. Merritt also held the 54-hold lead a year ago before getting tracked down by Collin Morikawa.

Matthias Schwab, in the field on a sponsor exemption, and Fabian Gomez tied for third with 37 points. Gomez scored 16 points on Sunday.

Werenski earned $630,000 and jumps from 70th to 34th in the FedEx Cup standings with the win.

“I knew I needed a big day and then I started off with a bogey, which wasn’t good,” Werenski said. “Just wasn’t in a great rhythm early on in the round, but did a good job of just kind of snapping out of it, stopped trying on every shot, stick with my game plan and just try and make as many birdies as we could.”

Tahoe Mountain Club’s Old Greenwood Course hosted the event for the first time. Montreux Golf and Country Club previously hosted from 1999 to 2019.

Troy Merritt takes lead into Sunday at Barracuda Championship

Troy Merritt will take the lead into the final round of the Barracuda Championship with +33 points.

Troy Merritt will take the lead into the final round of the Barracuda Championship with +33 points, followed by Maverick McNealy and Emiliano Grillo each with +29 points.

The Barracuda Championship, being played at Old Greenwood in Truckee, California, this week opposite the World Golf Championships FedEx St. Jude Invitaitional in Memphis, uses the Modified Stableford scoring format and is the only PGA Tour stop to do so.

Players are allocated points based on the number of strokes taken at each hole with the goal of achieving the highest overall score.

Merritt, who played golf at Boise State his last two years in college, finished second in the Barracuda last year, to winner Collin Morikawa. He had six birdies Saturday, and two bogeys.

Merritt will be in the PGA Championship starting Thursday, replacing Francesco Molinari, who withdrew Friday.

Robert Streb has +28 points, Joseph Bramlett and Richy Werenski each are next with +26 points. Seamus Power has +25 points.

Kyle Stanley led after the second round Friday with +22 points, mixing one eagle, six birdies and three bogeys in his first return to the Barracuda Championship since 2016.

Friday’s lead was the sixth time Stanley held the lead after 36 holes. He remained at +22 points (T10) after Saturday’s third round.

Stanley is a two-time Tour winner (2012 Waste Management Phoenix Open, 2017 Quicken Loans National).

The field was cut to the top 67 players after Friday’s second round. The cut line was at +6 points.

  • Sponsor exemptions Peter Kuest  and Sahith Theegala both advanced to the weekend in their Barracuda Championship debuts. Theegala is at +13 and Kuest at +12.
  • Austria’s Matthias Schwab is trying to become the first sponsor exemption to win since Matthew Wolff (2019 3M Open).
  •  Robert Streb has never missed the cut in five appearances at the Barracuda Championship.

Branden Grace WDs from Barracuda Championship after positive COVID test

Branden Grace has withdrawn from the Barracuda Championship after testing positive for COVID-19 before the third round.

Branden Grace has withdrawn from the Barracuda Championship after testing positive for COVID-19 before the third round.

Grace was tied for second through two rounds with Matthias Schwab and Robert Streb, each having +20 points in the event’s Modified Stableford scoring system.

“I felt great all week,” Grace said in a statement released by the PGA Tour. “Last night, I was tired and thought it had to do with the altitude. This morning, I notified the PGA Tour about my symptoms before going to the golf course. I wanted to get tested out of respect for my peers and everyone involved with the tournament. While it is unfortunate given my position on the leaderboard, the most important thing is our health.”

Barracuda Championship: Leaderboard | Best photos

The Tour also says it has implemented its response plan in consultation with medical experts, which includes identifying individuals with whom Grace might have come into contact. After conducting the necessary contact tracing, the Tour’s medical advisors are not recommending any additional testing at this time.

The Tour reports that Grace’s caddie tested negative for COVID-19, but in accordance with CDC guidelines and Tour health and safety protocols, he will still quarantine for a period of 14 days.

Grace, a South African, has made six starts since the Tour restarted in June. He was T-19 at the Charles Schwab Challenge and 61st at the RBC Heritage, but has missed the last four cuts.

He becomes the 10th player, or caddie, to record a positive test for COVID-19 since the Tour’s restart.

Kyle Stanley and a bear steal second-round spotlight at Barracuda

The Clemson product and two-time PGA Tour winner grabbed the lead after the second round with +22 points.

Kyle Stanley looked hungry during the second round of the Barracuda Championship on Friday. He wasn’t alone.

Stanley, along with a giant black bear, stole the show at Tahoe Mountain Club’s Old Greenwood golf course near Truckee, California.

The Clemson product and two-time PGA Tour winner grabbed the lead after the second round with +22 points. Matthias Schwab, Robert Streb, Branden Grace were tied for second with, each with +20 points in the Modified Stableford scoring system.

Stanley scored 14 points on Friday and had an eagle on No. 12. He also had an eagle on Thursday.

“It’s kind of weird, the format out here, you’re kind of focusing more on points than you are what your score is,: Stanley, 32, said. “I’ve been driving it well. It’s kind of fun with this altitude, you can kind of swing away. We have some shorter par-4s out here so you can make a go at some of those, a little bit of risk-reward, and just kind of kept the ball in front of me and a pretty clean round of golf.”

Maverick McNealy and Troy Merritt were next at +19 points.

The projected cut was +6 with the top 65 players plus ties making it.

But there are not just sand traps and water hazards at Old Greenwood. A bear strolled across the fairway on No. 18 about 10 a.m. Friday morning, then wandered over to a pond on No. 10.

Kevin Tway, Pat Perez and Brendan Steele were on the fairway when the bear crossed.

The rules of golf allow for a pause and hold in play if there is a threat, which they did.

Hard lead to hang on to

Not many first-round first-round leaders hold on to win the Barracuda.

There have been four in the first 21 years of the tournament, previously known as the Reno-Tahoe Open.

The most recent was Matt Bettencourt, in 2010.

There have been three first-round leaders/co-leaders to win on the PGA Tour in 2019-20 The most recent was Collin Morikawa, who won the Workday Charity Open. He won the Barracuda in 2019 and is playing in the WGC this week in Memphis.

Tournament takes on different form

It’s not a stretch to say this has been a year of disruptions and changes for the Barracuda Championship tournament staff.

Last summer, it was learned the PGA Tour would not return to its home for the first 21 years, at Montreux Golf & Country Club in south Reno.

They eventually moved to a new location, Old Greenwood golf course near Truckee, where the tournament continues through Sunday.

Then the COVID-10 pandemic hit, postponing all sports and eventually changing the date of the Barracuda and all PGA Tour stops.

Then, it was announced it late June that no spectators would be allowed, also due to the pandemic.

Barracuda tournament director Chris Hoff said the date change was actually a good thing, as it gave him and his staff more time to prepare for the 22nd version of the PGA Tour stop in the region.

There is usually a quiet buzz and hum of electricity at PGA Tour events, even with the course officials telling everyone to be quiet

[vertical-gallery id=778057407]

It is much different this year.

Hoff not having spectators this year is a big drain financially for professional golf.

He could not go into details, but said the financial hit is significant.

He said fans, pro-ams and hospitality tents are the main revenue stream for the Barracuda Championship.

The pandemic caused a dramatic shift in planning for the tournament.

“Everything now that we do planning-wise, we have to take Covid into consideration,” Hoff said. “Everything from the portable restrooms we have out here and cleaning those on a regular basis, to shuttles for the volunteers. They have to be less than 50 percent occupancy, so we have to get more of those. Literally every decision we have had to make, Covid was the first question.”

He said there are about half the usual number of volunteers they have had in previous years.

Last year, there were about 400 volunteers.

He said Barracuda officials worked with the state and county to come up with the plan to hold the tournament.

Hoff said they learned from watching the first seven PGA Tour stops this summer and adjusted on the fly.

“Everyone asks what it’s like and it’s, it’s weird,” Hoff said. “We’re still very, very busy, but it’s a different busy.”

Barracuda: Lanto Griffin learned from one of the world’s top golfers

Lanto Griffin befriended Vijay Singh and his son during the pandemic shutdown. Griffin said Singh is a bit misunderstood by the public.

If Lanto Griffin plays well this week in the Barracuda Championship, he knows who to thank.

Griffin has been getting lessons and advice from one of the top golfers in the world, Vijay Singh.

Griffin got to know Singh’s son, Qass, at a golf course and after the coronavirus shut down the PGA Tour in the spring and they started working out together.

Griffin said Vijay Singh is a bit misunderstood by the public.

“Vijay is one of those guys where if you don’t know him, you kind of think he’s different than he is, I guess. He’s an extremely generous guy and a lot of fun to be around,” Griffin said. “I went over and worked out at 9 a.m. thinking I’m just doing one or two workouts with him, and 10 weeks later I spent every single day with him.”

Leaderboard | Round 2 tee times | Photo gallery

Griffin said Vijay Singh is caring and generous with his time and enjoys helping other golfers.

“He’s probably spent six or seven hours with my girlfriend helping her with her swing. I never once asked him to do that, either. He just goes over and he likes helping people. I think in the media he’s got a little bit of a bad rap, and it couldn’t be further from who he is as a person,” Griffin said.

Vijay Singh, 57, won 34 times on the PGA Tour and is in the World Golf Hall of Fame.

Griffin said he helped with his swing and some other pointers, but the big takeaway is his mental approach and how he carries himself.

Griffin admitted he did not work too hard at golf before meeting Vijay Singh.

“He loves the game. I think he probably loves the game more than anybody I’ve ever met, and it shows. He does the stuff that people don’t want to do, doing little drills and working on swing changes and doing the stuff two, three hours of doing the same little drill, maybe it’s a one-handed just using your right arm or whatever it may be, but he puts the time in,” Griffin said.

Griffin is the highest ranked player in the Barracuda in the FedEx Cup standings at No. 10. He is in his second season on the PGA Tour.

Golfers who finish in the top 10 at the end of the regular season qualify for Wyndham Rewards tournament.

Griffin is tied for 18th after the first day at Old Greenwood. He scored eight points in the Modified Stableford scoring format, six points back of the lead.

Co-leaders after first round

Adam Schenk and Ryan Moore are the first-round co-leaders, each with 14 points.

Schenk had seven birdies. He said the key as to not get negative points and to try to save par when possible.

“There are so many of the reachable par-5s and the drivable par-4s. You can’t get them all, so when you don’t get one it’s important to make sure you’re making par and not forcing the issue too much and going backwards. That’s when you really hurt yourself is when you go backwards on those holes,” Schenk said.

Moore, from Las Vegas, said his early tee time on Friday could change his game, citing the cool mornings.

“It’s so cold in the morning that the distances, it’s very different. Just get a good grasp on how far the ball is going in the morning when it’s only 50 or 55 degrees for the first hour, hour and a half we’ll be playing, and then adjust as we go,” Moore said. “It’s a lot trickier than people think because it can change 10 percent throughout a day starting that early in the morning.”

Robert Streb, Seamus Power and Patrick Rogers are three points back at 11. Power had an eagle on the par-5 No. 12.

There were seven golfers tied for sixth with 10 points.

Power said he likes the Old Greenwood course.

“It’s just beautiful, the whole backdrop,” Power said. “But it’s a good test. The fairways are generous, but then if you kind of get away from it a little bit at all, you’re going to find some nasty spots. I think driving is going to be huge this week.”

Several former champions in Barracuda Championship field

Several former PGA Tour winners will compete in the 2020 Barracuda Championship, including Padraig Harrington, Vaughn Taylor and more.

Padraig Harrington will be returning to the Barracuda Championship — unfortunately, fans of the three-time major champion will not be able to watch him in person this year.

Harrington is part of the 132-player field announced for the PGA Tour stop July 27-Aug. 2 at Tahoe Mountain Club’s Old Greenwood golf course near Truckee.

Harrington won three major championships: The Open Championship in 2007 and 2008 and the PGA Championship, also in 2008. He spent over 300 weeks in the top 10 of world rankings, and reached a career-high ranking of third in July 2008. From Ireland, Harrington is also captain of the European Ryder Cup team.

The Barracuda Championship is held the same week as the World Golf Championships-FedEx St. Jude Invitational in Memphis, Tennessee. The Olympic Games men’s golf competition had been scheduled for this week before the Olympics were postponed.

Collin Morikawa, who won last year at Montreux, will be in the WGC this week.

The course: Old Greenwood is a 7,518-yard Jack Nicklaus-designed course east of Truckee. The Barracuda had been held at Montreux before club members there voted to not host it any longer.

Former winners: Several former Barracuda and Reno-Tahoe Open champions are competing again this year including Vaughn Taylor, Parker McLachlin, Greg Chalmers, Chris Stroud, Matt Bettencourt, Will Mackenzie and John Rollins.

TV only: The Barracuda Championship will be a television-only event this year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. You can watch it on the Golf Channel, starting at 7 p.m. ET each day Thursday-Sunday.

Exemptions: This year’s field includes exemptions for: Sahith Theegala, a member of Pepperdine’s nationally top-ranked team and winner of both the Haskins Award and Ben Hogan Award; Peter Kuest, one of the most accomplished golfers in BYU history with 10 tournament wins; and Derek Bayley, winner of the 2020 Reno Open hosted at Toiyabe Golf Club.

Tickets: If you purchased tickets to the 2020 Barracuda Championship, refunds are available or you can choose to roll over this year’s ticket purchase to the 2021 event. For any questions regarding your tickets, email info@barracudachampionship.com.

2020 Barracuda Championship odds, predictions, picks and PGA Tour best bets

Here are betting odds, predictions and picks from the PGA Tour’s 2020 Barracuda Championship.

The 2020 Barracuda Championship serves as the alternate event to this week’s WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational and returns to Montreaux Golf & Country Club in Truckee, California. Below, we look at the BetMGM outright betting odds, and make our PGA Tour picks and best bets for the Barracuda Championship.

Note: This tournament uses Modified Stableford scoring. Collin Morikawa and Andrew Putnam won in 2019 and 2018, respectively, with 47 points.

2020 Barracuda Championship Betting Picks – Tier 1

Odds provided by BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated Monday, July 27 at 1:50 p.m. ET.

Alex Noren (+2500)

Noren, a 10-time winner on the European Tour, fell just shy of his first PGA Tour victory at last week’s 3M Open. He went 5-under par in his final round but finished T-3 at minus-16 and three shots back of champion Michael Thompson.

He gained 1.71 strokes putting per round over the tournament, according to Data Golf, but was also steady on approach, off-the-tee and from tee-to-green. He was able to move to 98th in the Golfweek/Sagarin world rankings with the performance and will try again for his first victory against an even weaker field.

Matthias Schwab (+2800)

Schwab tied for 32nd last week at minus-10 despite losing a dreadful 1.70 strokes putting per round on the putting surfaces. He led the field with 2.76 SG: Tee-to-Green per round and was second with 2.05 SG: Approach. Bank on the more repeatable swings and get him at a number much higher than he should have against this competition.

2020 Barracuda Championship Betting Picks – Tier 2

Sebastian Munoz plays his shot from the fairway on the ninth hole during the first round of The Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village Golf Club. (Aaron Doster – USA TODAY Sports)

Sebastian Munoz (+6600)

Munoz tied for 48th in a strong field amid difficult conditions at the Memorial Tournament before taking last week off. He had previously missed three straight cuts following a T-28 showing at the RBC Heritage. His victory at the Sanderson Farms Championship earlier in the 2019-20 season was in a field more comparable to what he’ll face this week.

Bronson Burgoon (+8000)

Burgoon finished alone in fifth last year at minus-13 despite losing 0.44 strokes per round on the greens. He averaged 2.50 SG: Tee-to-Green over the tournament. He missed three consecutive cuts before finishing T-61 at the Workday Charity Open and T-41 last week and finally seems to be trending in the right direction.

Robby Shelton (+10000)

Shelton’s price is a mystery after he fired a Sunday round of 7-under to finish T-3 at minus-16 in a stronger field last week. He averaged 2.66 SG: Tee-to-Green per round, 1.42 SG: Approach and 1.13 SG: Off-the-Tee. He’s one of the top values on the board in an open competition.

Sahith Theegala (+15000)

We’re going back to Theegala yet again to try to capitalize on his high odds and college pedigree in a weaker field. He has begun his professional career with three straight missed cuts but will look to follow suit of Morikawa (2019 Barracuda Championship) and Viktor Hovland (2020 Puerto Rico Open) as top college golfers to get their first wins in these alternate events.
