Photos: Klay Thompson and Draymond Green join Leandro Barbosa for preseason workout

Golden State Warriors new assistant coach Leandro Barbosa recently joined Klay Thompson and Draymond Green for a recent offseason workout.

In September, the Golden State Warriors added a familiar face to Steve Kerr’s coaching staff. After spending time playing professionally in ex-Golden State wing Leandro Barbosa will serve as a player-mentor coach for his former team.

Before he takes his seat on the bench next to Kerr, Barbosa joined a pair of his former All-Star teammates for a workout. On Friday night, Barbosa shared a photo on Instagram featuring Klay Thompson and Draymond Green.

In the caption, Barbosa called back to his famous quote from Golden State’s championship run in 2015.

Thompson, Green and Barbosa will have the chance to connect with Stephen Curry and the rest of Golden State’s roster when San Francisco’s Chase Center opens up for preseason training camp on Dec. 1

During a conference call with Bay Area media, Barbosa spoke about his close relationship with Kerr.

I had a couple of text messages back and forth with Steve [Kerr]. I’ve always been talking to him. He’s been my coach when I was here. He also was my friend. We had a really close relationship when he was a GM for the Phoenix Suns, so every once in a while, we used to talk. And he mentioned to me what I want to do after I play. I always told him that I wanted to be an assistant coach, not a head coach, but, be able to talk to the players, kind of teach them. I think I’m kind of good at that, and he gave me the opportunity. And I talked to the family, my wife and she said ‘yes, let’s do it.’

“The Blur” is back in the Bay Area.

Over his 14-year career in the NBA, Barbosa spent a pair of seasons in Golden State, winning the championship alongside Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green in 2015. After leaving the NBA in 2017, Barbosa spent two seasons playing in his home country of Brazil.

In a conference call with Bay Area media, Barbosa revealed his roles as a player mentor coach would include sitting on “the back of the bench” on game day and working out with the players on the court during practice. Barbosa said he’s been texting with Kerr over the past week about a position with Golden State.

I’ll be on the court and the practice facility, I also will be practicing with the guys because I’m capable, I’m still in shape. On a game day, I will be on the back of the bench. I’ll be talking to the players as all the experience that I have over the years that I play on the NBA. I think I have a chance to kind of talk to them and make them understand what this business is all about. I’m looking forward to doing that. I guess this is my role. I had a big conversation with Steve [Kerr] today this morning, and over the week, when we were trying to make it happen for me to come back and my role is going to be this one.
