Robert Griffin: Ravens would have won if not for hamstring injury

After the game, Baltimore Ravens QB Robert Griffin III blamed his hamstring injury for the loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The Baltimore Ravens shocked most people by fighting the Pittsburgh Steelers to the final whistle in a very close game on Wednesday. In a game that saw so many Ravens starters out on the Reserve/COVID-19 list, the fact Baltimore was a single drive away from winning is quite the showing and something the team should be very proud of. But quarterback Robert Griffin III puts the loss solely on his shoulders, saying his hamstring injury was the difference.

“I pulled my hamstring in the second quarter and I felt like if I hadn’t done that then we would have won this game,” Griffin said after the game.

Griffin had come up limping in the first half during a four-yard run to the sideline. While Griffin didn’t come out at that point, a big hit in the fourth quarter put him on the sideline and Trace McSorley into the game.

Not to call Griffin out, but I’m not so sure the hamstring injury ultimately was the difference in this game being a win or loss. Griffin wasn’t exactly great prior to his injury, fumbling the ball on the second drive of the game and then throwing a pick-six on the third drive. He was 7-of-12 for 33 yards, no touchdowns, and that lone interception through the air while rushing for 68 yards on seven carries.

While McSorley wasn’t quite the savior fans were hoping for, completing just two of his six passes, he did throw a 70-yard touchdown to wide receiver Marquise Brown that put the Ravens right back in the game at the end. Had the Ravens’ defense been able to close out on third down on the final drive, McSorley would have had another shot with more than two minutes remaining, potentially winning the game.

It’s unfair to read too much into this game for Baltimore. With 16 players out, including several star players on both sides of the ball, the Ravens were always going to be handcuffed in what they could do. However, the offense’s performance with Griffin and McSorley under center left a lot to be desired and a hamstring injury wasn’t the biggest problem the Ravens faced.

Ravens CB Jimmy Smith questionable with back spasms vs. Browns

The Baltimore Ravens added cornerback Jimmy Smith to the injury report with back spasms, putting his availability into question.

The Baltimore Ravens haven’t even hit the field for warm ups and they have an injury issue. The Ravens announced they’ve added cornerback Jimmy Smith to the injury report with back spasms, making him questionable for today against the Cleveland Browns.

Smith has seen the injury report a fair bit over his career. Over nine seasons in the NFL prior to today, Smith has missed a total of 37 games. He missed seven games last season after suffering a knee injury on the first series of the first game. While technically not a starter, Smith’s newly questionable status for Week 1 could change what defensive coordinator Don Martindale had planned for this week.

Throughout training camp, Smith had been a floater in the secondary. Primarily taking on tight ends, it’s expected Smith would be the primary matchup with new Browns tight end Austin Hooper. But with Smith potentially not in the lineup today, those duties could fall to a linebacker or rookie safety.

Ravens injuries: LT Ronnie Stanley, ILB Chris Board still in concussion protocol

The Baltimore Ravens could be without left tackle Ronnie Stanley, who missed Week 15’s game against the NY Jets in the concussion protocol

The Baltimore Ravens simply need to beat the Cleveland Browns in Week 16 and they’ll lock themselves in as the No. 1 seed in the AFC. But they could have the tall task of beating a division rival without one of their best players.

According to coach John Harbaugh, left tackle Ronnie Stanley and linebacker Chris Board are still in the concussion protocol.

Both players missed the Ravens’ Week 15 42-21 win over the New York Jets. But with Cleveland likely attempting to play spoiler over Baltimore and looking to pick up a key win to potentially save jobs, missing Stanley would be a huge blow to the Ravens’ offense.

Stanley has been playing at an insane level, stepping up his game this season. He’s allowed just six pressures and no sacks through 13 active games, something that seems almost unheard of in this era of football. Of course, Baltimore features the top-ranked rushing offense in yards, touchdowns and yards-per-carry average — something Stanley is a big portion of.

Board hasn’t played much on defense after the Ravens signed L.J. Fort and Josh Bynes in the middle of the season. However, Board has gotten a number of snaps on special teams for Baltimore. And as a key reserve inside linebacker, Board would likely be counted on if there was an injury to Bynes or Fort.

With such a key game upcoming and with the playoffs looming in the future, the Ravens have an interesting question to ask themselves. While few teams have a chance to sit their players to rest up before the postseason, Baltimore might look to be extra cautious with Stanley returning in these final two games. But with a full week before the Ravens have to suit up against the Browns, there’s plenty of time for Stanley and Board to get healthy and back into the lineup.
