Why Baltimore Ravens Will Win the AFC Wild Card

Can the Ravens muck it up enough to be in this late?

They’ve been sputtering along without Lamar Jackson, the points aren’t there, and they’re struggling to find anything that consistently works well enough pull off tough wins. The defense is doing what it can, but it’s been too much of a grind offensively.

That’s the deal, though. The Ravens can’t keep up if this is any sort of a shootout, so it has to own third downs on both sides of the ball, find a push with the running game, and getting to Joe Burrow and generating consistent pressure all game long is a must.

Parts of that were a problem in the 27-16 loss last week to end the regular season, but the ground game worked well enough to at least keep it interesting. The run defense continued to be great, the pass defense held up okay, and the turnovers …

That was the problem. The can be fixed.

The Ravens didn’t control the clock, but Kenyan Drake ran okay and Anthony Brown threw for 286 yards. Now the starters are back.

There’s no Lamar, but JK Dobbins, Mark Andrews, and a slew of players who sat last week are returning. Most importantly, Tyler Huntley will be back under center.

Brown did what he could, but the four turnovers were a killer. Huntley isn’t air-tight, but he spread out his three interceptions over his five appearances and should be better at keeping things moving – he’ll add about 30 rushing yards to the mix.

However …

Why Baltimore Ravens Will Win

It’s not a must-win situation for the Ravens, but they could use the win just to make sure all is fine.

At the 6 seed right now, they’re in with a win or if Cleveland or Indianapolis lose. On the plus side, if they win and Miami and Tennessee lose, they’re up into the 4 seed.

They’re clicking at just the right time with the offense playing as well as it has all year, the running game is roaring with over 200 yards in three of the last four games, and the Bengals don’t hold up against the run all that well – they just got hit for 166 yards by Houston and made David Johnson look like David Johnson again, but …

Why Cincinnati Bengals Will Win

Going into this week, the Bengals have the fifth overall pick in the NFL Draft but could royally screw this up and possibly drop down as low as the 9 with a win.

But they’re still pressing.

They’ve won two in a row to knock themselves out of the prime draft district, cranking up what offense with a season-high 540 yards last week against the Texans and with the ground game starting to rumble a bit.

The pressure is totally off. Baltimore might be pressing, but the Bengals can let it loose against a secondary that doesn’t force a ton of takeaways and allowed over 200 yards in each of the last six games.

CFN Experts Picks: Week 17 NFL

What’s Going To Happen

Baltimore will take over as the game goes on to pull away in a focused and tough effort. Cincinnati will keep on pressing with a passing game that’s been dangerous, but the Raven running game will be too much, and Lamar Jackson will be too good.

It’s not going to be as bad as the 27-3 Raven win back in October, but it’ll be a strong performance to improve the playoff situation.

Why Cincinnati Bengals Will Win

Is Lamar Jackson going to be Lamar Jackson? He’s coming off a rough week getting past a knee injury, but he might not be the same sort of dynamic playmaker if he’s having any problems moving.

Joe Burrow has been solid so far – throwing for 300 yards in the win over Jacksonville – and he might get time. He’s been beaten up over the first four games, but Baltimore’s defense – as great as it is – doesn’t generate too much of a pass rush.

CFN Experts Picks: NFL

Why Baltimore Ravens Will Win

Start running, keep running, and don’t stop running.

The Baltimore ground game numbers crank up when Jackson is taking off, and even with his knee concerns he still might get going. The Bengals have a mediocre run defense and they have yet to recover a defensive fumble. Expect a steady dose of Raven backs. grinding it out.

CFN Experts Picks: College Football

Fantasy Football Player To Watch

WR Marquise Brown, Baltimore
The Bengals D doesn’t have the athletes to contend with QB Lamar Jackson running skills, but with his banged up knee, this might be the game to win through the air. It’s time for to Brown finally breaks out with his first touchdown against a depleted Bengals secondary that allowed 340 yards to Gardner Minshew last week.

What’s Going To Happen

The Baltimore defense isn’t the brick wall you might think it is. It’s been good at keeping teams from scoring, but it gives up a whole lot of yards. That will be this week’s game against the Bengals.

The Ravens will give up big yards to Burrow, but there will be a whole lot of bending without breaking. Jackson will be fine, the Baltimore offense will be fine.
