NFL power rankings: Ravens stay still as they enter playoffs hot

The Baltimore Ravens might not have moved on the power rankings list after beating the Bengals in Week 17 but they’re getting hot

After Week 16, I went out on a limb and said the Baltimore Ravens were one of the hottest teams entering the playoffs. A week, and an absolutely dominant performance against the Cincinnati Bengals later, the bandwagon is starting to fill up as others begin to realize what I noticed. The Ravens are improving in every single area of the game right as they’re getting healthy — a dangerous combo for anyone that has to go up against Baltimore.

Mark Schofield of Touchdown Wire noticed and pointed to a specific area where the Ravens have been improving. Though Schofield didn’t move Baltimore up or down the power rankings after Week 17, his words might carry a little more weight in light of the playoffs starting this week.

Schofield rightfully noted the Ravens’ downfield passing attack had been lacking recently. While the rushing attack found its footing over the last five weeks, quarterback Lamar Jackson was still keeping things short and tight when throwing the ball. It’s been a sore point for the offense all season, especially early in the season when Jackson’s deep accuracy was terrible but offensive coordinator Greg Roman kept dialing up long-developing deep shots. Finally, in Week 17, the deep ball returned and looked pretty good.

Perhaps the team took note, because early in their game Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals the offense tried to force some throws downfield.

The fact they built a 10-0 early lead is a coincidence, I’m sure.

You saw some of those early shots from Lamar Jackson and while the results were mixed, this is a good sign for the Baltimore offense as we look ahead. Jackson could not connect with Marquise Brown on a deep post route, but a few plays later he hooked up with Miles Boykin for a 43-yard score.

Looking at Jackson’s throws on Next Gen Stats, it becomes clearer just how effective the offense was throwing deep.

Granted, the Bengals were missing two starting cornerbacks, and Jackson only connected on three-of-seven throws of 15-plus yards. But all three receptions were touchdowns and had wide receiver Marquise Brown caught the deep target that bounced off his hands, the numbers would be significantly better. Considering Baltimore’s rushing attack gouged Cincinnati for 404 yards on the ground — setting a franchise record — it’s hard to be too frustrated with the limited attempts and success downfield.

As Schofield noted at the end of his section about the Ravens, “if Jackson continues to take – and hit – on these deep shots in the next few weeks, the Ravens could be pretty dangerous.” We’ll see what happens against the Tennessee Titans in the wild-card round but Baltimore’s deep passing attack might just be coming back at the right time for a deep playoff run.

NFL power rankings: Ravens just keep on rising after Week 16 win

The Baltimore Ravens are hot right now and by extending their winning streak in Week 16, they’re rising up the NFL power rankings

The Baltimore Ravens dispatched the New York Giants on Sunday, winning 27-13 in a game that wasn’t nearly as close as the score might seem. By not only beating the Giants but seeing some other AFC teams lose, the Ravens are now in control of their own playoff destiny and go into Week 17 with a very clear mission. After busting off four consecutive wins, Baltimore finds themselves quick risers up the NFL power rankings.

Mark Schofield of Touchdown Wire put together his latest NFL power rankings list and once again has the Ravens jumping up. Entering Week 17, Baltimore now sits at No. 8, leaping forward two spots from last week’s rankings. The timing of the Ravens’ rise to power didn’t escape Schofield either.

The Ravens picked the right time to come together, as their win over the New York Giants puts them in the driver’s seat for one of the Wild Card spots in the AFC.

All Baltimore needs to do is beat the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 17 to lock themselves into the playoffs. What seed they actually claim and who their opponent in the Wild Card round of the playoffs will all depend on what goes on around them, however.

As Schofield noted, the “Ravens seem like that proverbial team ‘getting hot at the right time’.” It’s an astute observation and one that really shouldn’t be discounted just because of how Baltimore looked earlier in the season.

The offense has finally found its rhythm, with the run game gashing opponents for 200-plus yards regularly and quarterback Lamar Jackson playing far more efficient and smart football through the air. The defense has a few more question marks than they did earlier in the season thanks to injuries but they should be getting healthy again over the next two weeks to return several starters. If someone was writing the perfect football conclusion, this is what it would look like.

As I noted last week when Baltimore beat the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Ravens are playing playoff-caliber football right now and answering their biggest questions at a time when much of the AFC is showing signs of weakness. After putting together some gutsy performances this season against physical teams, Baltimore might just have what it takes to go on a roll here at the end of the season and head into the playoffs as the one team no one wants to face.

Time will tell if the Ravens can pick up their first playoff win but everything is going about as well as can be expected after 16 weeks.

Ravens keep climbing TD Wire’s power rankings after Week 15 win

The Baltimore Ravens are on a three-game winning streak and building momentum at precisely the right time, improving in the power rankings

The Baltimore Ravens appear to be heating up at exactly the right time. While the Pittsburgh Steelers — winners of 11-straight games — have faltered and are slowing down, Baltimore is finding their groove on offense while the defense heals up. While the Ravens are no lock to make the playoffs, they are charging up the power rankings at the end of the regular season.

After a 40-14 beating of the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 15, Baltimore now ranks at No. 10 in Touchdown Wire’s latest power rankings. It’s a bump up from 12th last week and a third-straight week where they’ve risen up, sitting at No. 16 after Week 12.

As writer Mark Schofield points out, some of the Ravens’ climb up the power rankings is directly attributed to their schedule. After a tough middle that included two games against the Steelers, the Indianapolis Colts, and the Tennessee Titans, Baltimore is getting far easier opponents to close out the 2020 regular season.

But it’s also important to point out that the offensive line is finally jelling together after what feels like a million different starting combinations. Quarterback Lamar Jackson has found his mojo and is playing pretty solid football. The rushing attack has moved on from Ingram and are finding plenty of yards with J.K. Dobbins and Gus Edwards. Even the defense, struggling mightily with so many injuries, is still fearsome and should improve when guys come back to the starting lineup. With momentum building on a winning streak, people would be foolish to rule the Ravens out of anything at this point.

Ravens rise up TD Wire’s power rankings after dominant win over Cowboys

The Baltimore Ravens beat the Cowboys 34-17 thanks to a strong rushing attack, giving them a jump up the power rankings entering Week 14

The Baltimore Ravens got the job done against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 13. At times, it wasn’t the prettiest game we’ve seen from Baltimore, but they thoroughly handled their opponent, asserting their wills on the ground to the tune of 294 rushing yards and a 34-17 win.

That was enough to stop the backward slide down the power rankings and instead, gave the Ravens their first jump up since they beat the Indianapolis Colts in Week 9. Baltimore now sits at No. 14 in TD Wire’s power rankings, a bump up of one spot since last week.

Writer Mark Schofield noted that the Ravens are still on the outside looking in when it comes to the AFC playoff picture following this win. At 7-5, Baltimore is a game behind the Colts and Dolphins for one of the final seeds in the AFC. But Schofield also pointed to the Ravens’ soft remaining schedule as a glimmer of hope that Baltimore can finish strong and still squeak in.

On the field, there’s plenty to be excited about. The Ravens have been getting players back from the Reserve/COVID-19 list and injured reserve, seemingly making them more complete with each passing day. And given their performance on the ground the last two weeks — combined 423 rushing yards on 65 carries, for a 6.5 yards-per-carry average — Baltimore might have found enough of their mojo to be a legitimate threat again.

This isn’t exactly the way the Ravens and fans saw this team performing this season but with things heating up in the NFL, Baltimore is actually improving a bit.

NFL power rankings: Ravens drop after Week 12 loss to Steelers

The Baltimore Ravens lost to the Steelers in Week 12 and they’re not getting any credit for keeping it close despite COVID-19 issues

The Baltimore Ravens are now 6-5 on the 2020 season after losing to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Wednesday. While there are a million excuses for Baltimore’s loss and plenty of positives to be had in keeping a game against an undefeated team close, the end result is still a loss. As such, the Ravens continue to drop down the power rankings.

According to Mark Schofield of Touchdown Wire, Baltimore dropped three more spots down to No. 16 after Wednesday’s performance. While I’ve generally agreed with where Schofield has placed the Ravens in the past, this move down is a little hard to swallow.

Baltimore was without five starters on offense (including reigning MVP quarterback Lamar Jackson) and three starters on defense due to a COVID-19 outbreak while not practicing in the 10 days following Week 11’s game against the Tennessee Titans. Given such a massive handicap, the fact the Ravens had a shot to win the game at the end is deserving of either glowing praise for Baltimore or a serious scolding of Pittsburgh.

The Ravens’ defense came up clutch, making big plays and performing well in the red zone and on both third and fourth downs. Granted, the offense left a lot to be desired but that typically happens when you’re down to a backup quarterback who gets injured and needs the third-string quarterback to step in.

Baltimore might not have gotten any closer to the playoffs but they certainly showed they’re able to keep it competitive against some of the best the NFL has to offer. Though the Ravens sit in the middle of the pack in Touchdown Wire’s power rankings, don’t count them out quite yet.

NFL power rankings: Ravens suffer massive drop after Week 11 loss

The Baltimore Ravens dropped out of the top-10 in TD Wire’s power rankings for the 1st time this season after losing to the Tennessee Titans

It’s time to be nervous. At least that’s what Mark Schofield of Touchdown Wire believes in his latest NFL power rankings list. After another disappointing loss, this time to the Tennessee Titans, the Baltimore Ravens are running out of time. Because of the loss and the nerves, Schofield moved Baltimore down four spots, going from No. 9 to No. 13 this week.

Schofield and Doug Farrar, the keepers of Touchdown Wire’s power rankings list, have talked extensively about the Ravens’ issues this season when ranking them. But they’ve also been impressively optimistic, keeping Baltimore inside the top-10 until this week. But it’s clear Schofield believes the Ravens need a big performance on Thanksgiving night to keep their season afloat.

“Losers of two straight and three of their last four games, the Ravens now find themselves in third place in the AFC North and they will have to get right in a hurry. They travel to Pittsburgh for a Thanksgiving Night showdown against the Steelers. Win, and the season could be salvaged. Lose, and it might be over.”

While losing to Pittsburgh wouldn’t be the biggest blow, putting Baltimore at 6-5 with an incredibly soft schedule the rest of the way, it’s also not a good look for them either. The Ravens have their backs up against the proverbial wall right now and if they can’t get amped for this game, that would be a pretty big fall for a team that was labeled as a Super Bowl contender at the beginning of the season. It would also make the final five games all must-win events, a position no team likes to be in, come late November.

As I’ve said for the last few weeks, this game is a major litmus test for the Ravens. They need to put up or shut up on Thursday and there can be no excuses for failure. Week 12 against the Steelers will truly determine Baltimore’s season.

NFL power rankings: Baltimore Ravens nearly drop out of top-10 after loss to Patriots

The Baltimore Ravens fall down the power rankings yet again after a disappointing loss to the New England Patriots in Week 10.

The Baltimore Ravens lost to the New England Patriots in Week 10, falling to 6-3 on the season. After being heavy favorites in that game, the loss was unexpected. And with a handful of new injuries, including the season-ending knee injury to tight end Nick Boyle, there are some increasingly louder alarms ringing about Baltimore’s chances this year.

Touchdown Wire’s Mark Schofield has the Ravens dropping two more spots to No. 9 in his latest power rankings list. However, it could have been a lot worse, with Schofield using the weather as an excuse to not make it a more steep dropoff.

“On an even playing field Baltimore probably wins that game going away, but on this Sunday night in Foxborough this loss was due more to the conditions and the cut on the snapping hand of center Matt Skura than anything else.”

Schofield also pointed to the growing list of injuries the Ravens are dealing with. In addition to Boyle’s season-ending injury, Baltimore has Calais Campbell, Jimmy Smith, Brandon Williams, and Terrell Bonds all dealing with injuries of varying severity. While injuries can only be an excuse for so long, it’s difficult to play up to expectations when a team is missing several starters.

The one major concern for the Ravens has been on offense, as Schofield also noted. Regardless of the reasoning, Baltimore has struggled a lot with quarterback Lamar Jackson and offensive coordinator Greg Roman when they trail in a game. The team tends to abandon the run far too quickly, instead, asking Jackson to throw the types of passes he’s just not as good at doing right now. Until the offense proves it can overcome that problem consistently, people should rightfully be skeptical about how far Baltimore can go.

With games against the Tennessee Titans and Pittsburgh Steelers over the next two weeks, the Ravens will show what they’re really about in 2020. Two big wins would not only put them right back on track but could catapult them back up the power rankings.

Ravens rise up in TD Wire’s power rankings: Possible ‘new era’ for Baltimore’s offense

The Baltimore Ravens answered some questions in their Week 9 win over the Indianapolis Colts and got a bump up in the power rankings from it

The Baltimore Ravens emerged victorious in Week 9, beating the Indianapolis Colts 24-10 to pick up their sixth win of the season. Though not the prettiest or most complete win we’ve seen from this team, Baltimore showed a different side of themselves and it has some pretty excited about what’s coming next.

Mark Schofield of Touchdown Wire released his newest power rankings for the 2020 NFL season, and bumped the Ravens up one spot to No. 7. It’s not the biggest jump in the world but it stops a backward slide that saw Baltimore go from No. 1 all the way down the eighth.

Schofield specifically pointed to the Ravens’ offensive adjustments this week. He noted the offense came out sluggish to start with quarterback Lamar Jackson struggling. But a halftime adjustment to go more up-tempo against the Colts not only proved to be the winning strategy but has Schofield wondering if this “unlocked a new era for the Ravens offense.”

It’s worth noting that Jackson was a perfect 10-for-10 in the second half, helping Baltimore sustain drives with both his arms and legs. The Ravens went on to score 17 of their 24 points in the second half while the defense completely stymied Philip Rivers and Indianapolis’ offense.

With Jackson under center, Baltimore’s offense has often been viewed as a bit of a gimmick by some while others took it as an evoltion of the position and of offenses as a whole. Regardless of which side you fall on, adding a quick-paced attack to their arsenal is yet another thing opposing defenses have to gameplan for an potentially deal with in-game. And as we saw in Week 9, it might just be the thing the Ravens and Jackson need to do to get back into a rhythm and find success.

The next few weeks are crucial for Baltimore. Though they’re 6-2 right now, games against the Tennessee Titans and Pittsburgh Steelers could end up determining their playoff fate. At the least, those games will show just how capable the Ravens are.

NFL power rankings: Ravens didn’t play in Week 7, didn’t move in TD Wire’s power rankings

The Baltimore Ravens weren’t helped or hurt in TD Wire’s power rankings despite not playing a game in Week 7.

There’s an old adage in football that isn’t nearly as true as we’d all like it to be: “You can’t lose your job to an injury.” While that is a nice notion, things can absolutely change when players aren’t on the field. Though the Baltimore Ravens were on a bye in Week 7, they didn’t lose their spot in the power rankings.

The Ravens came into this week sitting in the No. 6 spot and after the dust has settled from the week’s games, they remain at No. 6 in Touchdown Wire’s latest power rankings list. Writer Mark Schofield used the bye week to take a closer look at one critical question facing Baltimore right now . . . “Could they get even better down the stretch?”

Schofield pointed out the Ravens’ inconsistencies on both offense and defense over the last few weeks, not as a negative but as a potential positive. If Baltimore can get that fearsome defense playing at a top level every down of every week and the offense finally shows some more life, they could go from being above average to great.

The Ravens already did what they needed in order to get the defense moving in the right direction. General manager Eric DeCosta pulled off a trade, landing Pro Bowl pass rusher Yannick Ngakoue. We’ve reviewed some of Baltimore’s biggest offensive issues and ways they could improve them, as well as some potential trade options if the Ravens decided they need more talent on the roster. Much like this time last year, there’s a pretty clear path forward for Baltimore, even if it’s not a guaranteed success.

Having gotten some much-needed rest and time to fix their schematic issues, we’ll see if the Ravens can finally take that leap forward in Week 8 when they take on the undefeated Pittsburgh Steelers. That game will help guide the rest of Baltimore’s season and likely impact their standings in the NFL power rankings.

Ravens stay at No. 6 in TD Wire’s power rankings after Week 6 win

The Baltimore Ravens picked up their fifth win of the 2020 season, beating the Philadelphia Eagles, but stay still on the NFL power rankings

The Baltimore Ravens took care of business in Week 6, beating the Philadelphia Eagles 30-28 in a nail biter of a game. Though the Ravens’ offense was once again inconsistent and the defense allowed far too many points in the fourth quarter, pundits around the league aren’t quite ringing the alarm bells yet.

Mark Schofield of Touchdown Wire has Baltimore staying at their No. 6 spot in this week’s power rankings. While he specifically calls out Philadelphia’s fourth-quarter comeback attempt as problematic, he also notes it’s not a big enough concern right now.

Still, the Ravens had a three-game stretch against some of the worst teams in the NFL right now that could have been a great tune-up prior to a much more difficult portion of their schedule. However, Baltimore didn’t really improve upon any of their areas of concern despite the easier competition. The hope is a Week 7 bye will give the Ravens a chance to fine-tune their defense and fix some of their more glaring offensive woes.

With the No. 1-ranked Pittsburgh Steelers up in Week 8, Baltimore will get arguably their first real test since a Week 3 beating from the Kansas City Chiefs. A win over the Steelers will heal quite a lot while a big loss could see the Ravens drop out of the top-10.
