[gambcom-standard rankid=”4141″ ]

The Colorado Avalanche (1-4-0) take on the San Jose Sharks (0-3-2) Sunday. Puck drop from the SAP Center at San Jose is set for 8 p.m. ET (ESPN+). Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s NHL odds around the Avalanche vs. Sharks odds and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

Season series: First meeting; The Avs won 3-0 last season

The Avs secured their 1st win of the season with a thrilling 4-3 OT home win against the Anaheim Ducks Friday. The Avs entered as -270 favorites looking like a shoo-in to finally get their 1st win and dominated in the 1st period. They outshot the Ducks 18-8, yet found themselves down 2-0. They battled back with 3 straight goals before ultimately folding with 13 seconds left in regulation. C Nathan MacKinnon ended it with just 41 seconds to go in OT.

The Sharks remained winless after the Winnipeg Jets paid homage to the late Dikembe Mutumbo and finger-wagged “No, no, not today!” The Jets pummeled the visiting Sharks 8-3 Friday, covering as heavy -399 favorites. San Jose RW Tyler Toffoli scored his team-leading 4th goal of the season in the loss.

Avalanche at Sharks projected goalies

Justus Annunen (0-1-0, 4.69 GAA, .765 SV%) vs. Vitek Vanecek (0-2-0, 2.63 GAA, .892 SV%)

G Alexandar Georgiev (1-3-0, 4.99 GAA, . 811 SV%) could get the start here, but he has started all 5 games. Annunen has seen spot duty in 2 games, stopping 11 of 13 shots in 1 game and 2 of 4 in another.

Vanecek started Thursday’s 4-2 loss at the Chicago Blackhawks and stopped 23 of 27 shots. He was pressed into duty Friday after G MacKenzie Blackwood (0-1-2, 4.88 GAA, .875 SV%) allowed 5 goals to Winnipeg in the first 22 minutes. Vanecek stopped 15 of 18 shots in relief. Vanecek was 1-1-0 with a 4.05 GAA and .884 SV% against Colorado last season.

Avalanche at Sharks picks and predictions

Prediction

Avalanche 6, Sharks 3

Moneyline

It’s story time. I watched Friday’s Avs-Ducks game waiting for Anaheim to get a lead to drop Colorado’s ML from an unplayable level at -270. When the Ducks got ahead 1-0, I bet Colorado at -115. The Avs went down 2-0 and made me sweat a little bit, but they eventually prevailed.

That’s the only way you can play this one as well. The Avs (-300) should beat the Sharks, but you can’t risk 3 times your return for it.

Instead, I’m going with CASEY MITTELSTADT OVER 2.5 SHOTS (+120). He has goals in 4 of 5 games and at least 3 shots in 4 of 5, too.

Puck line/Against the spread

I’m not touching an Avs puck line (-1.5, -110) at minus odds right now. The Sharks are without No. 1 pick C Macklin Celebrini (lower body), but they are hungry and on home ice.

PASS.

Over/Under

Both of these teams are battling significant goalie issues. Colorado is 4-0-1 O/U, and San Jose is 2-2-1. The Over is 5-4-1 in the last 10 head-to-head meetings, and we’ve seen 7+ goals in 3 of 4 in San Jose.

TAKE OVER 6.5 (-110).

Colorado Avalanche at San Jose Sharks odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Wednesday’s Colorado Avalanche at San Jose Sharks odds and lines, with hockey picks, tips and predictions.

The Colorado Avalanche (34-12-4) play the finale of a four-game set with the San Jose Sharks (20-26-6) Wednesday. Puck drop is scheduled for 9:30 p.m. ET at SAP Center. Below, we analyze the Avalanche-Sharks odds and lines, with NHL picks and predictions.

The Avalanche won the front end of the two-game set at SAP Center in San Jose by a 5-4 count in overtime, and Colorado has won each of the first three games in this four-game set, outscoring San Jose by a 12-7 count.

The Sharks have won just twice in the past 13 games, as they limp to the finish line of a forgettable season. They have been an underdog in each of the past 10, losing eight of those outings.

The Over is the most consistent thing about the Sharks, hitting in six of the past seven contests.

Avalanche at Sharks: Odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 10:08 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Avalanche -300 (bet $300 to win $100) | Sharks +240 (bet $100 to win $240)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Avalanche -1.5 (-115) | Sharks +1.5 (-105)
  • Over/Under: 6 (O: -115 | U: -105)

Avalanche at Sharks: Projected starting goalies

Philipp Grubauer (27-8-1, 2.00 GAA, .920 SV%, 6 SO) vs. Josef Korenar (2-4-0, 3.21 GAA, .896 SV%)

Grubauer coughed up four goals in Monday’s OT win, and he has allowed four or more goals in three of his past five starts. He has won both of his starts since returning from the COVID list, both against San Jose.

Korenar allowed four goals in Saturday’s 4-3 loss at Colorado, but he made 40 saves and was under siege all evening. He acquitted himself well, and he has won two of his past three outings overall.

Avalanche at Sharks: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Avalanche 4, Sharks 2

Money line (ML)

The Avalanche (-300) are heavy favorites to gain the four-game sweep, and you cannot risk three times your potential return despite the overwhelming feeling that Colorado is going to win again.

That’s how it works. A favorite ticks off several wins in a row, then one loss as a heavy favorite washes away the profits in an instant.

AVOID.

Play our new free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Against the spread (ATS)

The AVALANCHE -1.5 (-115) are worth a look on the puck line rather than betting them straight up. Colorado has won by just one goal in each of the past two, so don’t get crazy.

Familiarity of these teams, playing in their fourth straight matchup, means the Sharks will play them tight. It might take a late empty-net goal to get you over the hump here.

Over/Under (O/U)

I don’t like the flat line of O/U 6. I think we see exactly six goals in this matchup. Risk a little extra and play the alternate line of OVER 5.5 (-150) for a better value.

Colorado Avalanche at San Jose Sharks odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Monday’s Colorado Avalanche at San Jose Sharks odds and lines, with hockey picks, tips and predictions.

The Colorado Avalanche (33-12-4) play Game 3 of a four-game set with the San Jose Sharks (20-26-5) Monday. Puck drop is scheduled for 10:30 p.m. ET at SAP Center. Below, we analyze the Avalanche-Sharks odds and lines, with NHL picks and predictions.

This is the first of two meetings in the Bay Area but the third straight meeting overall. Colorado won back-to-back home games Friday and Saturday against San Jose and outscored the Sharks 7-3.

San Jose won its two most recent home games in sweeping the Arizona Coyotes in a two-game set by a 10-6 margin. The Over hit in both outings.

Avalanche at Sharks: Odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 8:30 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Avalanche -275 (bet $275 to win $100) | Sharks +225 (bet $100 to win $225)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Avalanche -1.5 (-110) | Sharks +1.5 (-110)
  • Over/Under: 6 (O: -110 | U: -110)

Avalanche at Sharks: Projected starting goalies

Philipp Grubauer (26-8-1, 1.94 GAA, .922 SV%, 6 SO) vs. Martin Jones (15-13-3, 3.22 GAA, .898 SV%, 1 SO)

Grubauer turned aside all 21 shots he faced Friday against the visiting Sharks and picked up his sixth shutout of the season. The Avs netminder is second in the NHL in shutouts behind only Semyon Varlamov of the New York Islanders. Grubauer has won six of his past seven outings dating back to March 29.

Jones was on the short end of that 3-0 shutout loss in Denver, as he made 33 saves on 35 shots. He is 1-3-0 with a 3.80 GAA and .898 SV% in his four starts against Colorado this season.

Avalanche at Sharks: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Avalanche 5, Sharks 2

Money line (ML)

The Avalanche (-275) will cost you nearly three times your potential return. While Colorado has dominated this series and is clearly the better team, that’s just too risky on the road.

AVOID.

Play our new free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Against the spread (ATS)

The AVALANCHE -1.5 (-110) are a much better play on the puck line. They have won three games in a row against the Sharks while covering the puck line in two of those outings.

They’re 5-1 in six meetings with the Sharks this season and won by 2 or more goals in four of those contests.

Over/Under (O/U)

The OVER 6 (-110) is the lean here, mainly because of Jones. He has been very giving against the Avs.

The Over connected in five of the past six games for the Sharks, so they’ve been very giving against everyone.

Colorado Avalanche at San Jose Sharks odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Monday’s Colorado Avalanche at San Jose Sharks NHL odds and lines, with hockey picks, tips and predictions.

The Colorado Avalanche (11-6-1) play the first game of a two-game set on the road against the San Jose Sharks (7-9-2) Monday with a 10:30 p.m. ET puck drop at SAP Center. Below, we analyze the Avalanche-Sharks odds and lines, with NHL picks and predictions.

Avalanche at Sharks: Odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 3:45 p.m. ET.

  • Money line: Avalanche -225 (bet $225 to win $100) | Sharks +190 (bet $100 to win $190)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Avalanche -1.5 (+120) | Sharks +1.5 (-145)
  • Over/Under: 6 (O: -115 | U: -105)

Avalanche at Sharks: Projected starting goalies

Philipp Grubauer (10-5-0, 2.01 GAA, .923 SV%, 2 SO) vs. Martin Jones (6-5-1, 3.85 GAA, .877 SV%)

Grubauer bounced back from a rough loss to the Minnesota Wild last week with a sharp performance against the Arizona Coyotes Saturday. He stopped 23 of 25 shots, and he has allowed 3 or fewer goals in 13 of his past 14 outings. He stopped all 21 shots he faced for one of his two shutouts in his last outing against the Sharks.

Jones has won just once in his past five outings, and he was also roughed up by Minnesota last week. The Wild hung four goals on him with just 20 shots, leading to a second-period pulling on home ice. He has allowed 3 or more goals in eight of his past nine appearances.

Avalanche at Sharks: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Avalanche 5, Sharks 2

Money line (ML)

The Avalanche (-225) are just too expensive on the road, as you have to lay more than two times your potential return. Look to the puck line instead.

PASS.

Play our new free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Against the spread (ATS)

The AVALANCHE -1.5 (+120) are a much better value at this price, as they have a high-octane offense and Jones has been terribly leaky in the crease this season.

While the Avalanche are a dismal 4-23 in their past 27 trips to San Jose, they are 4-0 in their previous four meetings overall in this series. The favorite is also 41-13 in the past 54 meetings.

Over/Under (O/U)

The OVER 6 (-115) is a good bet, as the Colorado offense has the potential to take care of this total on its own when.

The Over is also 16-6-2 in the past 24 meetings in this series, including 11-2-1 in the past 14 battles in San Jose. The Over is also 11-5 in San Jose’s past 16 as an underdog.
