Two-time NCAA champion Austin O’Connor pivots to MMA with Fury FC debut scheduled

One of the best wrestlers in UNC history is headed full-steam-ahead toward MMA with a pro debut set.

One of the best wrestlers in UNC history enters the world of MMA.

Two-time NCAA Division I wrestling champion [autotag]Austin O’Connor[/autotag] is putting the gloves on.

O’Connor, 25, will jump right into the professional ranks June 9 when he faces fellow pro debut [autotag]Camden Fontenot[/autotag] (3-1 amateur) in a featherweight bout at Fury FC 91 in Rosenberg, Texas.

Born and raised in Illinois, O’Connor joined the University of North Carolina wrestling team in 2017 after four straight state championship victories in high school. He won an NCAA championship in 2021 at 149 pounds and another one in 2023 at 157 pounds. He also was a five-time All-American and three-time ACC champion.

Due to a lack of an ideal weight class in the Olympics, O’Connor turned his attention toward MMA following his sixth and final year of eligibility.

“I kind of fell at a bad weight (for the Olympics). I was kind of an inbetweener,” O’Connor recently told MMA Junkie Radio. “I always had an interest in MMA and was connected with the right people and everything. I just kind of started chasing that down instead of wrestling.”

According to O’Connor, he had various ends of the MMA community reach out to him for training and management purposes, from JacksonWink to Bo Nickal to Vayner Sports. In the end, he found comfort under the wing of former UFC double champion Daniel Cormier.

“I felt like he was somebody I could trust and somebody I looked up to,” O’Connor said. “He’s somebody that’s gone through the same thing as me. … I like that he kind of keeps his team small and in the wrestling community.”

In preparation for his professional debut on UFC Fight Pass, O’Connor has been cross-training at Valle Flow Striking (VFS) Academy in Besenville, Ill. and American Kickboxing Academy (AKA) in San Jose, Calif., while also working as an assistant wrestling coach for University of Illinois wrestling.

Erin Matson and Austin O’Connor receive 2023 Patterson Medals

Erin Matson and Austin O’Connor honored with the 2023 Patterson Medals after legendary careers.

UNC announced Friday that North Carolina’s field hockey star [autotag]Erin Matson[/autotag] and Wrestling standout [autotag]Austin O’Connor[/autotag] are the recipients of the 2023 Patterson Medals.

It is only fitting that after two historic UNC careers, Matson and O’Connor get recognition for their achievements, being a part of the 100th class of Patterson Medal winners awarded to the most outstanding student-athletes. This award is difficult to snag, with requirements being at least three seasons played as a Tar Heel and no college eligibility left.

Matson finished her playing career with a fourth NCAA championship while highly regarded as one of the greatest collegiate field hockey players ever. She is the seventh field hockey player to be honored with this award. In November, Matson was named the new head coach for the UNC field hockey team, taking the place of the record holder for NCAA field hockey championships (10) Karen Shelton.

O’Connor has had a remarkable career for the UNC wrestling program, winning his second NCAA championship this past season. He is the only other wrestler in UNC history to win multiple NCAA championships. He became the fifth wrestler awarded this honor, the third since 1955.

Austin O’Connor named ACC wrestler of the year

Austin O’Connor was named ACC wrestler of the year weeks after winning his second National championship.

North Carolina wrestler [autotag]Austin O’Connor[/autotag] is adding another honor to his already extensive career after being named Atlantic Coast Conference wrestler of the year.

The announcement came Thursday through an ACC press release. O’Connor shares this honor with Pittsburgh’s Nino Bonaccorsi as co-winners for the ACC, voted by the league coaches. O’Connor showed complete dominance this year as a graduate student, finishing with a 23-0 record at 157 lbs, including his second national championship during his tenure at UNC.

O’Connor Tar Heel’s legacy was already stamped before this season started. Still, after snagging his second NCAA title, his legacy became that more unique, becoming the second in UNC wrestling history to win multiple championships.

O’Connor has been special during his time at UNC, with a record of 131 wins and 13 losses. He has been especially dominant in the ACC, only losing once in the 18-19 season.
