LFA 98 results: Josh Fremd earns middleweight title shot with massive knockout

Josh Fremd punched his ticket to an LFA middleweight title fight with a highlight-reel knockout in the main event of LFA 98 on Friday.

[autotag]Josh Fremd[/autotag] is the first man to advance to the finals of the LFA middleweight tournament.

Fremd (7-1) scored a brutal first-round knockout of [autotag]Bruno Oliveira[/autotag] (7-3) in Friday’s LFA 98 headliner, solidifying his spot in the championship round of the four-man grand prix.

LFA 98 took place at Hartman Arena in Park City, Kan. The entire card streams on UFC Fight Pass.

Fremd wasted no time locking up Oliveira with a trip takedown and planting him on his back inside the first 30 seconds of the fight. The Brazilian stayed patient, and climbed back to his feet to break away into striking range.

The pair threw some blows back-and-forth, but then Fremd found his desired target. Fremd scored with a clean left hook that instantly rocked and dropped Oliveira. Fremd pounced with a few hammerfists on the ground, and the referee dove in to halt the action.

An ecstatic, who trains out of Factory X in Colorado, reveled in the biggest victory of his career.

“This is the biggest win of my career,” Fremd said in his post-fight interview with Alan Jouban. “You don’t know my striking, you don’t know my boxing. I’ve always had (power), I just haven’t shown it.”

Fremd now moves on to an opportunity to fight for the vacant LFA middleweight title later this year. He will fight the winner of Anthony Adams (8-2) and Gregory Rodrigues (7-3), who will meet in the other semifinal bout at LFA 100 on Feb. 19.

“Both of those guys that are in that fight,” Fremd said. “I look forward to fighting either one of them. No preference.”

Bellator Europe 7 results: Leah McCourt takes decision in Dublin headliner

Northern Ireland’s Leah McCourt battled all the way to the scorecards with Judith Ruis to score her third straight win in Dublin.

Northern Ireland’s [autotag]Leah McCourt[/autotag] had to work for it, but the Belfast native scored an emotional victory over Germany’s [autotag]Judith Ruis[/autotag] at Bellator Europe 7.

After three hard-fought rounds at Dublin’s 3Arena, McCourt (4-1 MMA, 3-0 BMMA) took a unanimous decision on scores of 29-28, 29-28, and 30-27.

Early on, McCourt  looked to find her range with leg kicks and push kicks to the body of the shorter Ruis (6-5 MMA, 0-1 BMMA), who tried in vain to step into punching range and head-hunt.

But when the pair locked up against the fence, it was McCourt whose size, strength and grappling advantage proved decisive, as she won the majority of the exchanges against the cage and bossed the action on the mat.

In all three rounds, McCourt utilized judo trips to take her opponent to the canvas, as she dominated from top position on the ground. If anything, her keenness to find a better situation cost her solid positioning at times, as she returned to her feet and reassessed before going back to the mat again.

Ruis doggedly battled off her back, and midway through the opening round looked close to locking up an armbar on the former IMMAF world amateur champion. But with the crowd anxiously reacting to the sight, McCourt stayed calm and maneuvered her way out of the hold to finish the round in mount.

The pair traded shots at the start of Round 2 before Ruis initiated the clinch against the fence once again, but another judo toss from McCourt sent her opponent to the mat. This time, the Belfast native landed in mount, then ended up on Ruis’ back, and she locked up a body triangle and looked to work a submission on Ruis, who doggedly managed to reverse position and finish in guard.

[lawrence-related id=492287,492671,492561]

Despite being on her back, McCourt threatened briefly with a triangle choke, then a Kimura as she stayed active from the bottom, while Ruis looked to land strikes from top position as the round came to a close.

McCourt landed a quick takedown at the start of Round 3 as she quickly established top position on Ruis. Twice she stood back up to find a better position before going back to the mat, where she maintained top position and connected with a succession of elbows and punches. Ruis gamely scrambled her way back to her feet, but McCourt dragged her straight back to the canvas once again as she finished the fight on top.

McCourt’s victory was her third as a Bellator fighter – as well as her third win inside the 3Arena.

“She was tough,” McCourt said after the fight. “Her grappling defense and reactions were good on the ground, she getting a wee bit ahead of me when I was trying to take her down.”

She also admitted that handling the motions of the main event spotlight was a tough task during a whirlwind fight week in Dublin.

“Honestly, it’s been intense,” she said. “Every emotion under the sun. Crying one minute, happy the next, but I’m ecstatic to get in here and get the job done.”

Ward’s ‘Relentless’ attack brings late finish

In the night’s co-main event, [autotag]Charlie Ward[/autotag] used his physical strength to bully America’s [autotag]Kyle Kurtz[/autotag] before eventually bludgeoning his way to a TKO victory at 4:24 of the third round.

After taking his time to eye up his opponent, Ward (8-4 MMA, 5-1 BMMA) stepped across the cage and shoved Kurtz (10-8 MMA, 2-1 BMMA) against the fence. The barrel-chested Dubliner weighed heavy on the American and connected with some solid punches from the clinch, then dragged his man to the mat and landed in guard. With his opponent’s shoulders pinned to the mat, Ward postured up and landed a succession of piston-like left hands.

It was a case of rinse and repeat in Round 2 as Ward once again closed distance on his opponent, then dragged him down to the mat and connected with ground strikes. Kurtz managed to battle his way back to his feet, but Ward stayed stuck to him like glue and soon had “The Hurtz” back down on the mat once again, where he administered another dose of heavy-handed ground and pound.

Kurtz went for broke at the start of the third round. First he swung for the fences, then launched a flying knee in Ward’s direction. But the SBG fighter easily evaded it and wrapped up the American against the fence before taking him down the canvas once more.

“Relentless” served up another portion of ground and pound. Then, after Kurtz fought his way back to his feet, he continued his attack with a plethora of left hands from the clinch as he maintained control and bloodied his opponent’s face with repeated left hands that eventually forced referee Leon Roberts to pause the action to allow the doctor to check the American’s wounds.

The physician gave Kurtz the thumbs-up to continue, but it was only a temporary reprieve, as Ward resumed his barrage from the clinch as he kept his main pinned to the fence and hammered him with heavy lefts until Roberts mercifully waved off the fight with 36 seconds remaining.

Clem’s ground game proves too strong for Chalmers

[autotag]Aaron Chalmers[/autotag]’ MMA education continued under the bright lights of the Bellator cage as he suffered a lopsided decision defeat to debuting American grappler [autotag]Austin Clem[/autotag].

Chalmers (5-2 MMA, 2-2 BMMA) had success with his strikes, particularly his leg kicks, early on. But in each of the three rounds Clem (4-1 MMA, 1-0 BMMA) was able to close the distance and drag the Englishman to the mat.

Once Clem had his man down on the canvas, Chalmers was unable to fight his way back to his feet as “The King” maintained top position with relative ease, including two long spells in full mount in Rounds 2 and 3. The Missouri native looked comfortable in top position, but never seriously threatened with a submission attempt or a concerted effort to finish the fight with strikes.

Clem’s conservative approach from the top, coupled with Chalmers’ inability to work his way back to his feet, meant the bout descended into a slow-paced matchup that left the Dublin crowd frustrated as Clem rode out the three rounds to earn a landslide decision win with scores of 30-27, 30-27, 30-26.

4 burning questions heading into Bellator Dublin

MMA Junkie’s Simon Head picks out four key storylines to follow through Bellator’s first Euro series event of the year.

Bellator returns to one of the hotbeds of European MMA as Dublin’s 3Arena plays host to the first European Series event of 2020.

Following an injury to main event star James Gallagher, Bellator’s European matchmaker Jude Samuel has shuffled the deck, with Northern Irish women’s MMA pioneer [autotag]Leah McCourt[/autotag] set to take center stage in the biggest fight of her career.

The former IMMAF amateur world champion will headline the reshuffled fight card against Germany’s [autotag]Judith Ruis[/autotag] in a women’s featherweight main event, while a card packed with Irish and British prospects will look to wow the passionate and knowledgable Irish crowd on what is sure to be another wild night in Dublin.

Without further ado, here are four burning questions heading into Bellator Europe 7/Bellator 240.

****

Will ‘The Curse’ be a main-event blessing for the Irish fight fans?

McCourt’s promotion from main card notable to main event star represents a huge jump in exposure for the affable Northern Irish starlet, and the fighter playfully nicknamed “The Curse” is looking to complete a hat-trick of wins at the 3Arena on Feb. 22.

McCourt’s first two appearances inside the Bellator cage both produced stoppage wins, with both fights taking place inside Dublin’s famously atmospheric venue. Now she faces Ruis (6-4 MMA, 0-0 BMMA) looking to make it three in a row in Bellator, and three in a row in the 3Arena.

Ruis will have other plans, of course. The German now faces a monumental occasion on her Bellator debut as she will not only face one of the stars of women’s MMA on this side of the pond, but she’ll have to do it under the glare of the main event spotlight.

It’s a daunting prospect, but she’ll head into the bout with confidence having picked up a pair of first-round submission finishes in her last two bouts prior to being snapped up by Bellator.

It promises to be a night to remember for one of these unexpected main event fighters, but who will get their hand raised at the end of the night? Will McCourt (3-1 MMA, 2-0 BMMA) rise to the occasion on the biggest stage of her career, or will Ruis step in and spoil the party with a dream performance on her debut?

Aaron Chalmers expects ‘gritty fight’ at Bellator Europe 7, plans to ‘blow the roof off’ Dublin

Aaron Chalmers expects to have a sort of homefield advantage at Bellator Dublin.

[autotag]Aaron Chalmers[/autotag]’ previous MMA fights have come with a hefty side order of drama and stress as the MTV star-turned-fighter has fought against a barrage of online hate from fans. But now, heading into his seventh professional bout – his fourth under the Bellator banner – things are finally starting to calm down.

“I feel like all the online hate is starting to slowly turn,” Chalmers told MMA Junkie on media day ahead of his bout at Bellator Europe 7 in Dublin. “I think I’m starting to be a bit more accepted as an MMA fighter now, and the Dublin fans have given me nothing but good things online with messages and stuff, so I think it’s going to feel like a home from home, to be honest.”

The fight represents Chalmers’ first outside of U.K. soil, but he said that he’s so familiar with Ireland, having visited it regularly during his time as a reality TV star, that he feels completely at home on the Emerald Isle.

“No word of a lie, I think I’ve been to Ireland 150 times,” he said with a laugh. “Every time I’ve been here it’s been solid, so I think I’ll get a good reception.”

[lawrence-related id=491726,491408]

Chalmers (5-1 MMA, 2-1 BMMA) takes on American [autotag]Austin Clem[/autotag], who isn’t a household name, but the Englishman has done his due diligence and said he knows he has to be on his guard against a man who has notched a hat trick of submissions from his three career wins to date. But “The Joker” said he hoped his popularity among the Irish fight fans would help create an intimidating atmosphere for his opponent on the night.

“The upside for me is he hasn’t been on the big stage, and he doesn’t know how he’s going to handle that,” Chalmers said. “If there’s 8,000, 9,000 Irish fans chanting my name, that can be a daunting thing. But I need to be sure I don’t get sucked into his game. He’s a purple belt in jiu-jitsu, so I need to not get dragged into a scrap where he can drag me down and submit me.

“We’ve worked a lot on wrestling and ‘jitz,’ so we’ve been brushing up a lot on that. But I’ve also really been working on my standup, because that’s my go-to, and everything works around that. So I’ve got the heavy hands that can finish a fight with one shot, so I’ll build everything around that, but it’s nice to go in there on Saturday and have no stress over being pushed against the cage, because I’ve been there hundreds of times in the gym.”

So, with Chalmers’ defensive wrestling appropriately drilled and his standup sharpened for the battle ahead, it would be easy to assume he’s targeting a finish via strikes against Clem (3-1 MMA, 0-0 BMMA) on Feb. 22. But that’s not necessarily the case, as he explained.

“I wouldn’t say that for definite, because my last two wins have been subs, and if I see one, obviously I’m gonna attack it,” Chalmers said. “But he’ll be quite clued up in certain positions, so it might be hard to get one on him. But you never know, he might slip up with the pressure and give me something, but we’ll see.”

Clearly Chalmers has a healthy respect for Clem’s ground game, and he suggested as much when he offered his prediction for the fight. In short, he’s expecting a battle.

“I don’t think it’s going to end as quickly as I would like,” Chalmers admitted. “I think it’s going to be a tough, gritty fight, but I think I’ve got enough to get the job done, whether that’s in Round 1, 2 or 3.”

One prediction he was much clearer about, however, was the reaction he’ll receive when his walkout music hits the 3Arena speakers. He’s prepared something a little bit special for the Irish fight fans, and he hopes it produces the desired effect when he walks down the ramp to the cage.

“I’ve got an Irish DJ to mix a song that apparently is really big in Dublin,” he explained. “I’ve asked a few Irish fighters, and they’ve told me that it’s gonna blow the roof off the place. By the time I fight it’ll be 10:30 p.m, so the crowd will be half-drunk by then, so I reckon they’re all going to go mad for it!”

Bellator Europe 7: Aaron Chalmers lands Dublin showcase as Bellator adds six more bouts to Feb. 22 lineup

Aaron Chalmers heads the list as Bellator confirms six more matchups for their return to Dublin on Feb. 22.

The fight card for Bellator’s first European Series event of 2020 in Dublin is starting to take shape, with the promotion’s officials confirming six more bouts to take the number of announced matchups to 10.

[autotag]James Gallagher[/autotag] will headline Bellator Europe 7 at the 3Arena on Feb. 22 against [autotag]Cal Ellenor[/autotag] in a rebooking of their canceled matchup in Dublin at Bellator Europe 4 in September.

Now that bout has been joined by a main card addition, with England’s [autotag]Aaron Chalmers[/autotag] (5-1 MMA, 2-1 BMMA) moving back up to 170 pounds to take on promotional newcomer [autotag]Austin Clem[/autotag] (3-1 MMA, 0-0 BMMA), who arrives in Bellator with a 100% finish rate, with all three of his wins coming via submission.

Former MTV star and Geordie Shore castmate Chalmers is now 100% committed to his MMA career, and after bouncing back from his first career defeat with a submission victory over Fred Freeman at Bellator Europe 3, the 32-year-old Englishman has opted to move up to his more natural weight class of welterweight for his next outing in Ireland.

Also confirmed for Dublin is Irish light heavyweight fan favorite [autotag]Will Fleury[/autotag] (6-2 MMA, 2-2 BMMA), who returns to action looking to bounce back from his decision loss in Dublin in September. His knock-down, drag-out battle with Norbert Novenyi was one of the fights of the night at Bellator Europe 4, and Fleury will look to produce a similarly entertaining performance – albeit with a different result – when he takes on England’s [autotag]Justin Moore[/autotag] (9-4 MMA, 0-1 BMMA).

Fleury’s SBG teammate [autotag]Richie Smullen[/autotag] (5-1-1 MMA, 2-0 BMMA) has also been handed a matchup on home soil as he bids to complete a hat-trick of successive wins in Dublin by adding the name of [autotag]Ranjeet Baria[/autotag] (3-1 MMA, 0-1 BMMA) to his list of victims on home soil.

Also looking to build on their last appearance at the 3Arena is Irish strawweight [autotag]Danni Neilan[/autotag] (1-0 MMA, 1-0 BMMA), who will look to make it two wins out of two to kick off her professional MMA career when she faces off against Italian newcomer [autotag]Chiara Penco[/autotag] (4-1 MMA, 0-0 BMMA), while fellow Irish prospect [autotag]Blaine O’Driscoll[/autotag] (7-3 MMA, 0-1 BMMA) takes on [autotag]Ezzoubair Bouarsa[/autotag] (7-1 MMA, 0-0 BMMA) at 125 pounds.

Joining the local Irish stars on the card will be a European welterweight clash between Sweden’s [autotag]Oliver Enkamp[/autotag] (8-2 MMA, 1-0 BMMA) and Wales’ [autotag]Lewis Long[/autotag] (17-5 MMA, 1-0 BMMA), who both kicked off their respective Bellator careers with impressive wins last time out.

Enkamp finished Walter Gahadza via rear-naked choke with six seconds remaining of the opening round at Bellator 223, while Long finished the same opponent, via the same technique, three minutes, 10 seconds quicker than the Swede at Bellator Europe 6 in London on Nov. 23.
