Auburn vs San Jose State: Virtual report card from the Tigers’ 24-16 victory

Handing out grades from Saturday’s victory over the Spartans.

The Auburn Tigers survived a scare in week 2 against San Jose State of the Mountain West Conference. The Spartans took it to Auburn and struck first in the second with a 33-yard field goal from Taren Schive. The Tigers finally got on the board with 6:31 remaining in the second half when running back Jarquez Hunter scored his fourth touchdown of the season.

SJSU re-took the lead with a rushing touchdown prior to halftime, it was looking grim for Bryan Harsin and company. Tank Bigsby would open the second half with some key runs and gave them the lead at 14-10. While Auburn wouldn’t hold onto the lead, the game was too close for comfort.

In the final look back at this game, we have the virtual report card as well as the best and worst PFF grades from the game.

Winners and Losers from Auburn’s win over San Jose State

It was ugly but Auburn got the win Saturday, something several other major programs can not say.

Well, it may not have inspired a lot of o confidence but on a weekend with several massive upsets, Auburn was able to pick up the win.

The Tigers beat San Jose State 24-16 in Jordan-Hare Stadium Saturday and are now 2-0 on the season.

On a night when the offense was unable to get anything going in the first half, the Tigers’ defense was able to keep them in the game. The offense woke up in the second half and did just enough for Auburn to pull out the victory and avoid a disastrous loss, something Nebraska, Notre Dame, and Texas A&M were unable to avoid earlier in the day.

Here are some winners and losers from Auburn’s win over the Spartans.

Auburn survives San Jose State, wins 24-16

It was not pretty but Auburn picked up the win Saturday night.

It certainly was not pretty but Auburn beat San Jose State 24-16 Saturday night to improve to 2-0 on the season. The Tigers fell behind multiple times but did enough offensively in the second half to get the win in Jordan-Hare Stadium.

After struggling to move the ball in the first half, Auburn’s offense came alive in the second half. The Tigers entered halftime trailing 10-7 but answered with their first drive of the second half. They marched 69 yards down the field in nine plays and took a 14-10 lead thanks to [autotag]Tank Bigsby[/autotag] taking over.

Auburn’s best offensive player looked like it on the drive. He started the drive with a 16-yard run and had an 11-yard reception on 4th and 3 to keep the drive alive. He then ripped off a 19-yard run and punched it in from the one-yard line to give Auburn a 14-10 lead they would not relinquish with 11:45 left in the third quarter.

He finished the night with 51 yards rushing and one touchdown on 13 carries. He added four receptions for 29 yards.

After the defense forced a quick punt the Tigers’ offense once again went to work. Bigsby once again had another solid run to start the drive but this one was called back by a penalty, something Auburn struggled with all game.

Auburn was able to overcome the mistake and Anders Carlson converted a 45-yard field goal to give Auburn a 17-10 lead.

But San Jose State was not going down without a fight and responded with a field goal of their own to make it 17-13.

The Tigers once again answered back though and both quarterbacks played a role on this drive. Robby Ashford took a designed run 30 yards around the left side to open the drive. A few plays later [autotag]T.J. Finley[/autotag] connected with Ja’Varrius Johnson for a 24-yard gain to set up 1st and goal. Finley punched it in to give Auburn the 24-13 with 12:45 left to play.

The Spartans managed one more field goal to make it a 24-16 game with 2:11 to play but were unable to recover the onside kick and Auburn was able to run out the clock and secure their second win of the season.

Overall it was a strong game from Finley who started the game 1-of-5 with an interception. However, he responded to the interception perfectly, completing his next five passes, and was 12-of-15 for 158 yards after the interception.

He finished the night 13-for 20 (65%) for 167 yards and the interception. He also had five carries for 18 yards and a touchdown.

While the offense did not wake up until the second half, Auburn’s defense was ready to go from the start. They forced three punts to start the game and completely shut down the Spartans rushing attack, holding them to 1.9 yards per carry.

[autotag]Marcus Harris[/autotag] led the way, making 3.0 tackles for loss and a sack but the entire defensive line was able to generate pressure the entire game and forced Chevan Cordeiro to get the ball out quickly.

However, they were able to have success with that, their 275 passing yards were the most Auburn has allowed to a non-power conference team since 2015.

Here are the top photos from Auburn’s pregame festivities ahead of tonights game against San Jose State.

It is nearly time for Auburn football. The Tigers and the San Jose State Spartans are set to start their Week 2 showdown shortly.

Auburn is looking to improve to 2-0 after handling Mercer 42-16 last week. The Spartans beat Portland State 21-17 and are looking to pull off the massive upset.

While all eyes will be turned to the Auburn quarterback rotation to see how the snaps will be split between [autotag]T.J. Finley[/autotag] and [autotag]Robby Ashford[/autotag] there has been a change in the starting lineup.

[autotag]Koy Moore[/autotag], who transferred in from LSU, will start ahead of [autotag]Malcolm Johnson Jr.[/autotag] at wide receiver. While no announcement has been made, the move appears to be injury related as Johnson is not warming up with the rest of the receivers, according to Nathan King of Auburn Undercover.

Moore had one carry for eight yards last week and is looking to make his first catch as a Tiger in tonight’s game.

The game is set to start at 6:30 p.m. CT and will be on ESPNU.

Auburn vs San Jose State Game Preview

Why San Jose State Will Win

How much stress can the Spartans put on the Tigers?

It took a last minute touchdown pass for San Jose State to get by Portland State 21-17, but the defense managed to come up with three takeaways, former Hawaii dual-threat QB Chevan Cordeiro had a decent debut, and now the job will be to keep pushing the passing game deep.

The Tigers didn’t have too many issues with Mercer in a 42-16 win to start the season, but there wasn’t much happening with the pass rush, and there wasn’t going to be a threat coming from the Bear passing attack. That’s about to change.

More than that, the Spartans have to hope Auburn is looking ahead just a wee bit to the showdown against Penn State up next.

CFN Expert Picks, Week 2

Why Auburn Will Win

This is the week for Auburn to turn the pass rush loose.

San Jose State struggled to control the tempo and the game, and it didn’t help that Portland State spent almost the whole game sitting in the Spartan backfield.

Part of that was because of the mobility of Cordeiro, but the D stepped up and didn’t allow much of anything on the ground.

The Auburn defense will be a rock against the run, and …

Week 2 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

San Jose State is good enough to make this competitive, but Auburn has its guys now.

Tank Bigsby is coming off a big 147-yard, two touchdown game, TJ Finley settled in, and the offense was explosive against Mercer until it took its foot off the gas.

There will be lulls, but this is when the Auburn offense starts to look like it really might be a problem for everyone going forward.
