Auburn beats Mercer 42-16 to open 2022 season

It took a little longer than it needed to, but Auburn beat Mercer for their first win of the season.

Auburn opened the season with a 42-16 win over the Mercer Bears Saturday to start the 2022 season. The Tigers had to wait for their first win as lighting forced an hour and 27-minute delay in the third quarter.

Auburn scored the first 28 points to seize control of the game and never looked back. [autotag]Tank Bigsby[/autotag] and [autotag]Jarquez Hunter[/autotag] led the way offensively, combining for five rushing touchdowns and 181 yards. In total, nine Tigers rushed for 285 yards and five scores on 41 carries.

[autotag]T.J. Finley[/autotag] was Auburn’s starting quarterback but backup quarterback [autotag] Robby Ashford [/autotag] played early and showed that the battle for Auburn’s starting quarterback may not be over. He subbed in for Finley on the fourth play of the game and promptly ran for eight yards. He showed his big play potential to open Auburn’s second drive, taking the ball 49 yards around the left side to set up the Tiger’s second touchdown.

After Finley started the game 8-of-9 for 100 yards and one touchdown his night took a turn. He threw two interceptions in his final four passes and finished the night 9-of-14 with one touchdown and two interceptions.

Ashford took over from Finley after his second interception and attempted his first pass, a dropped screen pass. He didn’t let that deter him, completing his next two passes, a third-down conversion to [autotag]Tar’Varish Dawson Jr.[/autotag] and a beautiful 56-yard pass to [autotag]Ja’Varrius Johnson[/autotag].

Ashford led the final three drives of the night, with the offense touchdowns on the first two and turning it over on downs on their final drive of the night. He finished the night 4-of-7 for 100 yards and rushing for 68 yards on six carries.

Ashford showed enough that the battle to be the starting quarterback is not over and will bleed into the rest of the season.

The defense showed why they project to be the strength of the team, holding Mercer’s offense to 16 points and 4.0 just yards per play a week after they scored 66 points.

[autotag]Cam Riley[/autotag] showed why the coaching staff is so high on him. He led Auburn with 15 tackles and one quarterback hurry. [autotag]Nehemiah Pritchett[/autotag] also showed why he is the new top corner, making three tackles and breaking up two passes.

Auburn will return to action Sat. 10 against San Jose State (1-0) in Jordan-Hare Stadium.

Auburn vs Mercer Game Preview

Why Mercer Will Win

The Bears were terrific in their opener against Morehead State in a 63-13 win.

The running game went off, the team carried the production on third downs over from 2021, and now Auburn has to gear up to handle both lines that come into the season strong.

The Tigers aren’t rebuilding, but they’re going to be looking to crank up the inconsistent offense and the defense needs a whole lot of tweaking in the back seven.

Mercer isn’t the pushover offensively that Auburn might like, but …

Why Auburn Will Win

Auburn has the defensive front to make Mercer try throwing.

It’s not that the Bears can’t – Fred Payton was on against Morehead State with 248 yards and four scores on just 11 completions – but that’s not how they’re going to want to move the ball.

As good as the Mercer defense should be, the pass rush has to show up. It was bad last year, it didn’t come up with a sack in the opener, and all of that means TJ Finley will get plenty of time to operate.

Auburn will have a good balance, and …

Week 1 Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Saturday

What’s Going To Happen

Everything will be fine after about a quarter.

Give Auburn a little bit to wake up – Mercer might have an early lead for a little longer than anyone would like – but it’ll all kick in, the Tiger offense will do a little of everything to mix it all up, and the D will hold firm against the Bear ground game in the second half.

It won’t be perfect, but it’s Week 1. It’s why you schedule Mercer.

Auburn’s offensive keys against Mercer

Auburn is clearly more athletic than the Mercer Bears but here are five things they need to do on offense.

The start of Auburn football is just one day away and we can finally start talking about specific football games.

Auburn is set to open the season against the Mercer Bears Saturday in Jordan-Hare at 6 p.m. CT and the Bears are already 1-0 after dominating Morehead State 63-13 last week.

Auburn is clearly more talented and athletic than Mercer and it can be tough to have any big takeaways against an FCS opponent, even a good one.

Despite that, there are lots of questions about Auburn’s offense and this game will be the first chance to see how they have progressed over the off-season. This includes both newcomers who were brought in this offseason and experienced players who are looking to fill bigger roles.

Here are five keys for Auburn’s offense against Mercer.

Auburn QB commit schedules return visit to the Plains

Four-star quarterback commit Adrian Posse is making his return to Auburn.

Auburn quarterback commit [autotag]Adrian Posse[/autotag] will be in Auburn for the Tiger’s season opener against Mercer on Saturday.

Last time Posse was on the Plains was for Big Cat Weekend in July when he committed to Auburn. Posse is a four-star quarterback and one of Auburn’s two commits in the 2024 class.

He is ranked as the No. 186 overall player and No. 13 quarterback for in the 247Sports Composite ranking. He is also the No. 33 player from Florida.

Posse is from Miami, Florida but with Miami Edison High School opening the season on Thursday, he will be able to attend the game.

While the visit is not an official visit it will be Posse’s first visit since committing and will be a chance for him to see a game in Jordan-Hare Stadium.

Five things to know about the Mercer Bears

Here are things five things to know about Mercer before Saturday’s game.

The start of Auburn’s 2022 college football season is nearly upon us. The Tigers will open the season with the Mercer Bears, an FCS opponent.

While they are an FCS opponent the Bears can not be taken lightly, especially on offense. They played against Morehead State last week and cruised to a 63-13 win. This was in large part to their explosive offense which thrives on creating chunk plays and quick strikes.

This should provide a solid test for Auburn’s defense, giving them a chance to start the season with an opponent they are more talented than but is still dangerous.

Here are five things you should know about Mercer ahead of Saturday’s game in Jordan-Hare Stadium.

Auburn vs Mercer: Quarterback’s Tale of the Tape

A look at the quarterback comparison between Auburn QB TJ Finley and Mercer QB Fred Payton.

With the offseason officially in the rearview mirror, Auburn Wire set it’s sights on the season opener against the Mercer Bears. Last year the Bears finished 7-3. Their lone FBS matchup came against the Alabama Crimson Tide during week 2, in which they lost 48-14.

This year they come into their week 1 showdown with Auburn with a game already under their belt. It was a 63-13 throttling of Morehead State, Mercer led 42-10 at the half and cruised in the second half.

With the game just over 72 hours from kickoff, we preview the matchup with the quarterback tale of the tape. In their first game, Mercer quarterback Fred Payton threw for 248 yards and 4 touchdowns.
