Grading LSU’s performance against Auburn

Handing out grades for the LSU-Auburn game.

Streaks are meant to be broken.

LSU lost to Auburn for the first time since 1999 on Saturday, and the result was largely due to one reason — Auburn made halftime adjustments and LSU didn’t.

Auburn shut down LSU’s passing game in the second half. The Tigers went to a three-man front and were often dropping a defensive lineman as a quarterback spy or as an extra defender in coverage. Once Johnson realized nobody was open, he began to scramble away from the Auburn pressure that had finally gotten home and the game turned ugly.

Auburn dared LSU to run the ball and it didn’t. On the flip side, LSU dared Auburn to throw the ball, as it stacked the box to prevent Tank Bigsby and Jarquez Hunter from getting going. Unfortunately for LSU, the pass rush couldn’t bring Bo Nix down when it mattered. Overall, adjustments needed to be made, and they weren’t.

Here are some unit grades following LSU’s loss to Auburn on Saturday night.

Five reasons why LSU dropped the ball at home

It started out great then the wheels came off.

The streak has been broken.

Auburn came into Baton Rouge and won for the first time since 1999. The Tigers snapped a 10-game losing streak in Death Valley.

LSU stormed out to an early 13-0 lead but let Auburn claw back into the game late. LSU even had a nine point lead heading into the fourth quarter. Unfortunately, they let Auburn score twice and couldn’t get stops down the stretch. There were multiple missed opportunities for LSU when Auburn was giving them the chance to get back into things, but LSU’s offense simply sputtered.

Five Auburn players that can wreck LSU’s chances to win

These five players could ruin the LSU Tigers day on Saturday night.

While Auburn might not be playing hot right now, there is no denying the talent that is still on roster for the Tigers. Past recruiting has kept Auburn from completely falling off a cliff to start Bryan Harsin’s tenure.

Auburn still has some NFL talent, specifically on the defensive side of the ball. The majority of Auburn’s starters took part in a 48-11 victory over the LSU Tigers last season. Has Auburn gotten 37 points worse than they were a year ago in this game? Who could potentially lift Auburn to a victory if the opportunity arose?

Kickoff time between LSU and Kentucky set

The kickoff time and network announced for the LSU-Kentucky game.

The LSU Tigers will be playing under the lights in Lexington next Saturday.

Kickoff between LSU and Kentucky has been set for 7:30 p.m. eastern time. The Tigers hold a 40-16-1 all-time lead over the Wildcats, including a two-game winning streak, and seven wins over the last ten games. However, the last time LSU made the trek up to the bluegrass state to take on Kentucky was back in 2007 in an overtime game that No. 17 Kentucky stunned the No. 1 ranked LSU Tigers in.

Kentucky is currently 4-0 and 2-0 in the SEC. The Wildcats earned a big win over Missouri to open up conference play in week two and defeated South Carolina on the road in a defensive affair this past weekend 16-10. Sandwiched in-between those two SEC games was a confusing 28-23 win over Chattanooga, a game that Kentucky struggled mightily in. Which Wildcats show up on Saturday will be most likely be figured out this weekend, as Kentucky takes on No. 10 Florida at home. LSU plays No. 22 Auburn this Saturday before the aforementioned road contest against Kentucky.
