As Auburn and Kentucky meet on Saturday for the first time since 2015, let’s take a look back at the close call the Tigers, who went on to win the national championship, had in 2010 in Commonwealth Stadium.
Gene Chizik’s team came into the at No. 8 and 5-0 after close wins against Clemson and South Carolina. Kentucky started the season 3-0 but were coming off back-to-back losses to Florida and Ole Miss.
The Pass
By this time of the season, we knew that Cam Newton was something special but when he threw this pass to find Kodi Burns for 40 yards, it was certainly amazing.
Stopping Randall Cobb
Cobb did it all for the Wildcats that night, putting up 207 total yards and three touchdowns by playing running back, quarterback, wide receiver and returning kicks.
The Drive
A field goal by Craig McIntosh tied the game at 34 with 7:31 to play in the game. The stadium was electric and smelled an upset.
The Wildcats would never touch the ball again.
Newton led the Tigers down the field on a 19-play, 86-yard drive that ended with Wes Byrum nailed a 24-yard field goal as time expired to give Auburn the victory.
