Takeaways from Auburn basketball’s 80-71 win over Kentucky

This is the best team in the country.

Auburn strengthened its grip on first place in the SEC after an enormous victory on Saturday.

The Tigers downed the No. 12 Kentucky Wildcats 80-71 at home, improving to 18-1, 7-0 in SEC play. Texas A&M now stands in second, at 15-3, 4-1.

It was a game that Kentucky started out hot, turning Auburn over and converting the mistakes into points. As the game went on, Auburn asserted themselves on the defensive end, and injuries to Kentucky guards TyTy Washington and Sahvir Wheeler allowed the Tigers to crawl back into the game.

Why Auburn Will Win

Kentucky just doesn’t quite no how to win.

That, and it can’t shoot.

The Wildcats are dead last in the SEC from the field, they struggle from three, and they don’t generate enough steals and big things on defense to make up for the issues.

In the first meeting back in mid-January, Auburn was able to get by 66-59 thanks to the free throw line – making six more than UK – and getting a few more offensive rebounds.

Why Kentucky Will Win

It’s not like Auburn is tearing up the SEC.

Kentucky might be struggling, but Auburn lost three straight before getting past Vanderbilt. The Tigers are way too inconsistent from the field, and while they’re taking a whole lot of threes, they’re missing a ton of them.

The Wildcats can match AU’s usual strength on the boards and they’re solid at defending the three. It’s just about simply making shots with this team, and Auburn’s defense is hardly a rock.

What’s Going To Happen

Kentucky is just one of those teams that doesn’t know how to win.

It’s able to hang around in most games, and it pushed a strong Arkansas team a few games ago, but it’s missing that one or three key moments to get over the hump and get the win.

It’ll get that one extra rebound and one extra three in this to finally get an interesting win.

Random thoughts after an unusual gameday weekend in Auburn

I spent the weekend in Auburn and, despite some oddities, it was great to be back on The Plains for a game.

Wasn’t it fun to have Auburn football back? That feeling that you are about to hyperventilate because the Tigers went three-and-out instead of taking advantage of good field position? That nervous energy when the opponents take an early lead and it seems like the whole season is lost just five minutes into the game?

Yeah, I actually missed that. I’m sure you did too.

I was in Auburn this past week to take in what was certainly the oddest gameday environment I have ever witnessed. Heck, it was easy to get a bar seat at The Hound, that’s how weird it was! (Shoutout to Matt Poirier for the best drinks and food in town!)

While I didn’t attend the game on Saturday, it was still a very different experience. Some highlights:

  • Traffic? What traffic? It was extremely simple to both get an Uber and get into downtown at all times. While I didn’t have to look for parking spots — still a problem in Auburn I am sure — I made it from my hotel off the exit of 51 to downtown in less than 10 minutes. Super!
  • Speaking of hotels … you can actually find one for cheap during a game weekend. I know, it sounds like I’m talking crazy but I assure you I am not. Take advantage.
  • Thanks to my friend Jeff Nance for both the golf at Moore’s Mill on Friday along with the copious amounts of alcohol he supplied during the round. Now, let’s just hope I play better next time and by that I mean more of those transfusions from the drink cart. Brian Walker, have you quit the game again?
  • The Momma’s Love at Momma Goldbergs? Still the best sandwich in town. I will fight people who disagree.
  • Bo Nix looked more comfortable in the pocket but the couple of throws he threw while backing up or off his back foot had me holding my breath.
  • What were the SEC Network announcers drinking during the game? Right before the Terry Wilson fumble when the Wildcats were on the 30-yard line or so, one commentator said if nothing was there he should just throw it away because they were in field goal range. Do the Wildcats have the best kicker EVER that he could make a 90-yard field goal?
  • Sure, I loved the idea of Gus Malzahn wearing the short-sleeved shirt and tie along with the block-A hat to honor Pat Dye but I beg him to go back to the sweater vest and visor. Great tribute though.
  • Props to the event staff in the athletic department for the seating arrangements in the stadium during the game. The scattered seats made the stadium look much more full than I had expected.
  • Being a Kentucky native, I had been secretly dreading this game since it was announced only because I wouldn’t hear the end of it from my friends and family who went to UK. I took the high road and waited for them to text me. As a reward for Auburn’s win though, I’m posting this picture of my sister Lori along with the Wildcat from back in 1995.

  • As for the game, I have already published my grades for each positional unit but there was a lot to like about what we saw on the field on Saturday. Let’s hope that trend continues as we travel to Athens this week for a top-10 matchup.
  • What was Eddie Gran thinking getting away from the run game for Kentucky? Sure, Kevin Steele is a legend and made the adjustments necessary but putting the game on the arm of Terry Wilson? Well, that just didn’t work out.
  • The fake punt call was a sign of desperation for the Cats. One, it didn’t come close to working and, more importantly, the running route the punter took by running approximately 10 yards sideways before even heading up field makes me think he doesn’t know geometry. That or he was actually supposed to punt and then thought he could make it. Either way, thanks for the great field position, Mark Stoops.
  • If you haven’t had the meatloaf at The Hound with mashed potatoes and collard greens, you are missing out. Oh, and have a Salty Dog or two. I might have been there four times in five days. I swear they are not a sponsor for us.
  • Personal thanks again to friends Randy Alford and his entire crew along with David Thrasher, Guy Davis and their crew as well for the hospitality on Saturday. Yes, I’m putting their names in here just so I am invited back. Also, I was the one in charge of making sure that myself, Randy and a friend of his named Blake were all in the same spots after we started putting it on the Cats. I’m not superstitious at all, I swear.
  • After rain on Thursday and an overcast Friday, the weather on Saturday was nothing but perfect football weather. The sun was shining and some of the students I saw afterwards were a bit sunburnt, but it was nothing close to the heat of an early September game.
  • Seth Williams is a bad, bad, bad man! Holy **** is he a weapon among weapons. That picture of him just pushing Keldon Joseph to the ground while holding the ball with one hand might just be the wallpaper on my laptop now. Oh, why don’t we just look at it again?

Throwback Thursday: Auburn survives upset bid by Kentucky in 2010

Cam Newton and the Auburn Tigers were put to the test by Kentucky in 2010 in Commonwealth Stadium.

As Auburn and Kentucky meet on Saturday for the first time since 2015, let’s take a look back at the close call the Tigers, who went on to win the national championship, had in 2010 in Commonwealth Stadium.

Gene Chizik’s team came into the at No. 8 and 5-0 after close wins against Clemson and South Carolina. Kentucky started the season 3-0 but were coming off back-to-back losses to Florida and Ole Miss.

The Pass

By this time of the season, we knew that Cam Newton was something special but when he threw this pass to find Kodi Burns for 40 yards, it was certainly amazing.

Stopping Randall Cobb

Cobb did it all for the Wildcats that night, putting up 207 total yards and three touchdowns by playing running back, quarterback, wide receiver and returning kicks.

The Drive

A field goal by Craig McIntosh tied the game at 34 with 7:31 to play in the game. The stadium was electric and smelled an upset.

The Wildcats would never touch the ball again.

Newton led the Tigers down the field on a 19-play, 86-yard drive that ended with Wes Byrum nailed a 24-yard field goal as time expired to give Auburn the victory.

Auburn (0-0) vs Kentucky (0-0) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college football, go to BetMGM

Why Kentucky Will Win

Kentucky has the offensive front to control the game and give the revamped Wildcats a chance to keep its style going.

With QB Terry Wilson back, the offense can switch back from the style of run first, run only with Lynn Bowden at the helm. It’ll all rumble behind a line that gets back four starters and has a whole lot of depth, and the defensive front should be even stronger.

Control the tempo, let the lines take over, and drag the opponent down and slow everything to a crawl. Kentucky should be able to do that.

Week 3 Expert Picks: NFL

Why Auburn Will Win

Can the Tigers open it up a little more?

Bo Nix should know what he’s doing in his second season as the starter, Seth Williams is one of the best receivers in college football, Anthony Schwartz is among the fastest, and Eli Stove will be as good a No. 3 as any in the SEC.

Kentucky has a good secondary, and it has enough offensive parts to be good, but the Tigers can take over the game right away with a few scores. AU has the linebacking corps to keep UK from doing what UK (normally) does.

Week 4 Expert Picks: College Football

What’s Going To Happen

Kentucky is going to be a problem.

Auburn will pull this off with Nix coming through on two fourth quarter scoring drives, but it’s going to take a whole lot of sweating to get there with the Wildcats showing up strong on both sides of the ball.

Expect a low-scoring grind, but it’ll be entertaining.
