Auburn set to host Alabama State at Plainsman Park on Tuesday

Auburn baseball is back on the diamond Tuesday as they host Alabama State.

For the first time since the 2016 season, the Auburn Tigers will play Alabama State. The first pitch is set for 6:00 p.m. CT.

These two teams have met 10 times since the 2011 season with the Tigers winning nine of those games. Auburn has won five straight since Alabama State’s lone victory in 2014.

The Tigers trailed 4-3 going into the eighth inning on that day when the Hornets struck for five runs on two singles, two doubles. and a throwing error from Terrance Derick. He allowed two runs 0.2 innings of work, both were unearned runs.

Auburn will look to make it six straight against Alabama State after they took two of three against Yale over the weekend. The Hornets and Tigers played two games in 2016, both times Auburn scored 11 runs in each game.

So far this season the Auburn baseball team is 5-2. After dropping the opening game of the season to the Oklahoma Sooners, the Tigers won five straight before their extra-innings loss to Yale in the back half of the doubleheader. The Alabama State game is the first of six games over the next five days.

Three losers from Auburn’s win over Alabama State

Much like last week, there were not a lot of poor individual performances for Auburn.

Much like last week, there were not a lot of poor individual performances for Auburn.

The Tigers started off the game slow, but a 35-point third quarter (Auburn’s first 35-point quarter since 1993 against New Mexico State) helped Auburn pull away en route a 62-0 shutout (my score prediction was 63-0. Just saying.) over the Alabama State Hornets.

While it might have been a shutout, some of Auburn’s issues last season began to arise in small doses during this game. Let’s hope they don’t rear their head next week.

Here are three losers from Auburn’s shutout win over Alabama State.

Five reasons to panic: Auburn looking sloppy against Alabama State

Are you panicking yet?

Remember how I said yesterday that Auburn was getting hot while other SEC teams were struggling with inferior competition?

Forget all of that.

Through two quarters Auburn leads Alabama State 20-0, but they have not looked good in the process. After completing 20 of his 22 pass attempts last week, Nix is 8 for 16 for 80 yards and one touchdown.

Here are five reasons why I’m panicking with Penn State a week away.

Multiple Auburn Tigers out for game vs Alabama State

Auburn will be without two starters and some depth players during their matchup with Alabama State.

Auburn will be without two starters and three depth players during their matchup with Alabama State today at 11 am CT.

Starting wide receiver Ja’Varrius Johnson is not going through pre-game warmups, per Christian Clemente of Auburnsports.com.

Shaun Shivers is not expected to play today as well. Tar’Varish Dawson will dress out but is not expected to play. Expect to see a lot of Jarquez Hunter, Jordan Ingram, and Sean Jackson to fill in during the second half. Cornerback Jaylin Simpson will dress out but is not expected to have a full workload due to a groin injury.

Cornerback Ro Torrence will not see the field today.

Dreshun Miller, the talented transfer from West Virginia, is expected to fill in for Simpson and Torrence.

Auburn (1-0) vs Alabama State (1-0) Game Preview

Why Alabama State Will Win

The Hornets have the experience from the FCS spring session, going 3-3 – or 2-3 with a forfeit – with a decent offense and enough of a defense to hold on and make most games close.

And now they’re unbeaten in 2021 with an overtime win over the Golden Bears of Miles College.

Auburn will be using this as a light scrimmage, but they’ll be well focused on the trip to Penn State next week and won’t exactly be sweating this. QB Ryan Nettles is a veteran who can at least hit a few passes, and …

Why Auburn Will Win

Auburn will be able to get to the backups as soon as possible.

If the 60-10 win over Akron was the warm-up, this is a preseason game to play around with the depth, get some live action to solidify a few positions, and get TJ Finley in there after Bo Nix hit 20-of-22 passes against the Zips.

Everything worked just fine in the first game under new head coach Bryan Harsin with over 600 yards of total offense and no points allowed by the D until the fourth quarter.

What’s Going To Happen

Blink and this will be over.

The Tigers will get a few drives in to play around with the playbook a bit, and then everyone sits to get ready for what’s next. Don’t expect anything funky – there’s no need to give Penn State anything to see.
