Auburn sports broadcasts will move to new radio home beginning this fall

Local Auburn fans will have to tune into another station to listen to Auburn Sports Network broadcasts this season.

Since 2016, local Auburn fans have listened to Auburn Sports Network broadcasts on the Tiger Communications family of stations.

Beginning this fall, those same fans will have to turn the dial to listen to Auburn football, basketball, and baseball games.

Justin Lee of Opelika-Auburn News reported Friday that local radio company Auburn Network has acquired the rights to Auburn Sports Network broadcasts for the next five years. Because of this, football and men’s basketball games will be broadcasted on Wings 94.3 in Auburn. Women’s basketball and baseball games will now call AU100 home (100.3 on the FM dial).

The change does not affect broadcast assignments, as [autotag]Andy Burcham[/autotag] will remain the voice of Auburn football, men’s basketball, and baseball. In fact, Burcham will be a regular guest on Auburn Network’s sports talk station, ESPN 106.7.

This change will affect local softball broadcasts as well. Auburn softball broadcasts will move back to their original home, WEGL 91.1, with Brit Bowen and JJ Jackson remaining the primary play-by-play talent.

The first Auburn Sports Network production will begin in August with the first edition of Tiger Talk, with the first Auburn football broadcast coming on Sept. 2.

Utah State AD John Hartwell listed as the favorite for Auburn job

Could Auburn be closing in on a new athletic director?

While the Auburn Tigers football program is enjoying the open week, there is still plenty of work to be done on and off the field. Given the performance on the recruiting trails and on the gridiron, many believed that this week would be an ample opportunity to make a change.

However, as of Wednesday morning, it hasn’t happened and it doesn’t appear as though it will. It will be business as usual for Bryan Harsin and his staff. Recent reports seem to indicate that the administration is waiting on the hiring of a new athletic director before making any decisions on the future of the second-year head coach. But who could this new AD be?

In an update on the coaching carousel, ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg provided a name with SEC ties that could be the choice for the Tigers in his latest hot seat buzz (subscription required).

Utah State athletic director John Hartwell (an Alabama native who led Troy’s athletic department and spent about a decade as an Ole Miss administrator) is considered a leading candidate, according to sources.

Back in late August following Allen Greene stepping down from his position as the athletic director, Pete Thamel highlighted Hartwell as one of seven potential candidates for the job. Hartwell even said he was interested in an interview in August.

“To be associated with that job is flattering, and I think it is one of the very best jobs in the entire country so if they called, I would absolutely listen.” – Hartwell on Auburn per AL.com

John Hartwell has held the athletic director position at Utah State since 2015. Prior to joining the Aggies, he held the same title for Troy from 2012 to 2015. Hartwell served as the Senior Executive Associate Athletics Director for Ole Miss from 2003 to 2012. During his tenure with the Rebels, Hugh Freeze served as the tight ends coach and recruiting coordinator from 2006 to 2007, he returned as head coach in 2012.

I am just spitballing here, but Freeze and Hartwell could be a package if the administration goes with the Alabama native as their next athletic director. Or perhaps Hartwell pulls a Danny White and brings his head coach with him. It worked for Tennessee.

Auburn names new Interim Athletic Director

The university will still search outside the athletics department to find a new permanent candidate.

Auburn has named its Interim Athletic Director after the firing of [autotag]Allen Greene[/autotag] last month.

The university announced on Wednesday that Rich McGlynn would take over as the school’s Interim Athletic Director in Greene’s stead. The announcement seemed to make clear that the Tigers are still searching for a new AD outside of the organization and that McGlynn will run operations during this transition period.

Here is what McGlynn said in the school’s press release.

“I’m excited and humbled to help lead Auburn Athletics through this transition period. I’m thankful to Dr. Chris Roberts for this opportunity. I have such enthusiasm and love for Auburn. We’ve raised our family here, all four of our children have attended Auburn and we bleed orange and blue.”

Previous to this role, McGlynn joined Auburn’s staff in 2006 and was a sport administrator for men’s basketball, equestrian and swimming and diving. He also aided Auburn in matters relating to NCAA compliance, as he previously worked for the NCAA before joining Auburn’s athletic department.

McGlynn was also the sport administrator for football when the team won the 2013 SEC Championship and competed in the last BCS National Title Game.

Former Duke, Notre Dame athletic director comments on Allen Greene’s departure

Former Notre Dame and Duke AD Kevin White didn’t have kind words for Auburn.

Former athletic director Allen Greene’s surprise departure on Friday has already drawn some controversy.

Former Notre Dame and Duke athletic director Kevin White, whom Greene worked under briefly after graduating from Notre Dame, had a few comments on Greene’s departure and the Auburn Tigers as a whole.

In a released statement, White called Greene’s dismissal “terribly disturbing” and “utterly shameful”, as well as claiming Auburn’s athletics department has “legendary” dysfunction. Aside from what he called a “tone deaf” move from the Tigers, White had quite a bit of praise for Green and his family, referring to the former athletic director as “classy”, “talented” and “intellectual.”

It comes as no surprise that White would stick up for someone who worked under him as Greene did, and his sudden departure when some fall sports have already kicked off is bound to raise more eyebrows than White’s. Whether his comments on Auburn’s dysfunction are correct, however, will remain to be seen when the Tigers begin the process of hiring Greene’s replacement in the coming weeks.

BREAKING: Auburn Athletic Director Allen Greene steps down

Greene had served as Auburn’s AD since 2018.

The Tigers will be on the lookout for a new Athletic Director.

[autotag]Allen Greene[/autotag], who has held the position since 2018, has stepped down from the position to what Auburn has described as “pursue other professional interests.” ESPN college football writer Pete Themel originally broke the story, but the Tigers made it official at 1 p.m. CT on Friday.

As mentioned in the press release, Greene oversaw eight conference championships, a basketball Final Four appearance and two trips to College World Series for the baseball team.

Here is what Greene had to say on the split from the official release:

“The decision to step away from Auburn Athletics has not been an easy one, but it is the right time for me to begin my professional journey. I am very proud of the work that we have done together to move our athletics program forward. Christy and I want to thank the Auburn Family for allowing ourselves to be a part of something truly unique and I wish Auburn nothing but the best in the years ahead. I am confident we leave Auburn Athletics stronger than we arrived.”

It is unknown at this time if a replacement for Greene is lined up, but fall sports for 2022 will commence without him after his stepping down.
