Jay Gogue issues statement, takes not-so-subtle shot at UAB’s Bill Clark

Auburn University President Jay Gogue issued a statement regarding the coaching search and the hiring of Bryan Harsin.

Auburn University President Jay Gogue let it be known that some of the rumors and reports that spread throughout the coaching search were false. In fact, he seemed to go after a candidate or two with a not-so-subtle statement.

In an email sent out to Auburn alumni and fans on Wednesday night, Gogue held nothing back.

It is also important to remember that not everything that is reported or posted on social media is accurate when it comes to coaching searches. In fact, some of it is disruptive, inaccurate and malicious. In our coaching search for example, no candidate was told that there were stipulations on who would serve on his coaching staff – not one. Only one trustee, who actually served on the search advisory group, had any part in the search process. Some candidates who reportedly “turned down” the Auburn job were never even offered the job. One candidate that made these statements never even had an interview, much less an offer.

That last line is especially specific toward UAB’s Bill Clark who claimed that he turned down the offer from Auburn because he would not have full autonomy of the coaching staff.

Per a report by AL.com, Clark was never offered the position but did have some talks with Auburn while Louisiana’s Billy Napier reportedly turned down the position to stay with the Ragin’ Cajuns.

The search ended with the hiring of Boise State’s Bryan Harsin. Gogue and Harsin appear to have already spoken on what evolved during the search.

Coach Harsin and I agree on many things and one thing is that much of what you see and read on social media are opinions or statements that are simply not based on fact. I regret that these comments hurt our university and many good Auburn people. Free speech is a treasured American right, but the Auburn family should also have the right to know the facts.

Twitter goes crazy as Bryan Harsin is named Auburn’s 27th head coach

Twitter went crazy after Auburn hired Boise State’s Bryan Harsin as head coach.

Ladies and gentlemen, we’ve got a new head coach. Auburn hired Boise State’s Bryan Harsin on Tuesday making him the 27th head coach in Auburn history. Harsin leaves Boise State with a 69-19 head coaching record and three Mountain West championships.

Needless to say, Auburn fans everywhere were relieved and 99% are pretty excited about the hire. Let’s go to Twitter for the reactions:

And last but certainly not least, a thread reaction gif for your enjoyment.

New energy. New head coach. War eagle!

BREAKING: Bryan Harsin to become the 27th head coach for Auburn football

Boise State’s Bryan Harsin will become the 27th head coach for Auburn.

It was a deal done with a lot of silence and it truly came out of the blue … the blue turf, if you don’t mind.

Per Jay Tate of AuburnSports.com, sources confirmed to him that Boise State’s Bryan Harsin has agreed to become the 27th head coach at Auburn.

The impending deal was first reported by Pete Thamel who wrote:

Once Auburn fired coach Gus Malzahn last week, a spree of rumors and backchannels around the university began. Auburn officials point to Harsin’s hiring as the culmination of a thorough search run by athletic director Allen Greene, which included the use of Parker Executive Search.

“There’s been lots of speculation out there, but it’s been a professional search,” said source familiar with the search. “The process was managed in a way that’s consistent with industry standards.”

One of things that appealed to Auburn officials was Harsin’s competitiveness, as the school acknowledges the challenge of competing in the SEC West. Harsin comes from the Chris Petersen tree at Boise State, which is known for high integrity and the ability to connect with players.

Along with high-flying offenses, it was attractive to Auburn officials that Boise State traditionally values dominating both lines of scrimmage.

In seven seasons with the Broncos, Harsin went 69-19 and won three Mountain West Conference championships.

This would be the second time he has taken over a job from Gus Malzahn, the first coming in 2013 at Arkansas State.

Report: Auburn targeting Boise State’s Bryan Harsin, deal expected

Auburn is reportedly targeting Boise State’s Bryan Harsin as its next head coach.

Major news broke out of left field on Tuesday evening.

Per Pete Thamel, Auburn is narrowing in on Boise State’s Bryan Harsin as its new head coach and a deal is expected to happen soon.

In seven seasons with the Broncos, Harsin went 69-19 and won three Mountain West Conference championships.

This story will be updated.

Report: Auburn has contacted Hugh Freeze regarding head coaching job

Liberty head coach Hugh Freeze has reportedly been contacted by Auburn regarding its vacant head coaching position.

Auburn is turning its interest toward a former SEC coach.

Per Brandon Marcello of 247Sports, Liberty head coach Hugh Freeze has been contacted by the Tigers regarding the vacant head coaching position.

Considered one of the favorites when the job became vacant after Gus Malzahn was fired last Sunday, his name quickly disappeared.

Freeze comes with both experience in the SEC and some baggage. At Ole Miss from 2012-16, he led the Rebels to a 39-25 record including a 10-win season in 2015. Yet he might be more remembered for getting the Ole Miss program on probation under his watch and his personal transgressions off the field.

He has definitely rehabbed his image in two seasons at Liberty, leading the Flames to a 9-1 record this season and helping the program win its first bowl game in history last season.

Report: Clemson DC Brent Venables withdraws name from Auburn search

Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables has reportedly withdrawn his name from the Auburn search.

Another one has turned down Auburn.

On Tuesday, Pete Thamel reported Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables has told Clemson he will be staying and has withdrawn his name as a candidate for the Auburn head coach position.

Venables was a popular choice due to turning the Tigers into a defensive power over the last several seasons.

He becomes the third person in the last 24 hours to withdraw from consideration along with Louisiana’s Billy Napier and UAB’s Bill Clark

Auburn Coaching Search 7.0: Where do Tigers go from here?

The Auburn coaching search continues and the Tigers will have to look at some new candidates.

The Auburn coaching search has been turned on its head as multiple candidates have turned down the job including both Billy Napier and Bill Clark on Monday alone.

So where do the Tigers turn from here? Let’s open the book once again on all possible coaches that Auburn could go after along with the odds of them getting the job.

Report: Bill Clark no longer candidate for Auburn head coaching job

UAB”s Bill Clark is no longer a candidate for the head coaching job at Auburn.

The search continues.

On Monday evening, Brandon Marcello of 247Sports reported that UAB’s Bill Clark is no longer a candidate for the Auburn head coaching position.

Clark, who has rebuilt the Blazers program and has won two of the last three Conference USA titles, was a hot candidate for the past two days after Billy Napier and Steve Sarkisian both dropped out of the race.

Want to make this easy, Auburn? Call Hugh Freeze

Auburn is bumbling its coaching search but it could all be solved with one call to Hugh Freeze.

Auburn is making this search a whole lot harder than they should. The people in charge are turning what should be Coach Hiring 101 and turning it into rocket science.

It doesn’t have to be this hard. All they need to do is pick up the phone and call Hugh Freeze.

(As always, full disclosure that Freeze and I are friends.)

Listen, for all of you worried about the baggage he might bring to Auburn after his troubles at Ole Miss, I am here to settle you down. He’s a different man than he was then. I know firsthand. When we met in 2018 while I was working on a feature about him during his darkest days when he was unemployed, I asked him what he would do different if he got a second chance at coaching.

Curious, I question him on how he would handle being the head of a football program if given another chance. As he does with all of my questions, he doesn’t hold back, laying out part of a plan that he hopes he soon will present to athletic directors looking for reasons to hire him.

He ponders the question again, drifting off with his thoughts. He looks at me and states, “I will be more determined.”

He even admitted that he might have been in over his head during his days in Oxford. If you are afraid of him embarrassing the program, you shouldn’t be. Given another chance in the SEC, he’s not going to make the same mistakes twice. While many may consider him a hypocrite because of his failings while also being so upfront about his religious beliefs, stop it. Everyone makes mistakes in life. He has paid his penance for it, most importantly to his family

His building of Liberty into a top-25 team in just two seasons has been nothing but astounding. He has taken a roster of players that were overlooked by other FBS schools and won big, including a huge victory at Virginia Tech this past season.

More importantly, he has taken an Auburn and Gus Malzahn castoff in Malik Willis and turned him into an offensive machine. All of the things that Auburn said Willis couldn’t do, he has done.

We have seen what he can do at Ole Miss and, yes, while recruiting violations will always overshadow his tenure there, there is still one truth: he won. He won like the Rebels had hardly ever seen. He beat Alabama two years in a row including in Bryant-Denny Stadium. He beat the snot out of Kirby Smart and Georgia. Doesn’t that sound appealing to you considering the Tigers record against the Bulldogs recently?

His players truly love him. Attending practices as his guest at Liberty over the past year, I have seen the affection that the men who play for him have not only for Freeze but for the entire coaching staff. I’m basically a nobody but each and every player greeted me with a “Hello, sir.” Hey, hanging out with the head coach has some advantages, I suppose.

I’m not the only person endorsing him as ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit came out in favor of the Tigers going with Freeze.

“To me, I think you have to look at Hugh Freeze,” Herbstreit said. “I think you have to look at what he went through at Ole Miss, how he’s owned that, how he’s talked about that. You have to come to grips with that. You have to see if you can come to grips with that. And if you can, then you hire him — because he’s got an offense. He’s got a system. I think he is very different than Gus offensively even though they get labeled from the same coaching tree and coaching branch. I think he’s different in the pass game. I think he’s got a way about him. He competes. He’s done very well against (Alabama head coachNick Saban in recruiting and competing against him. I don’t know. That’s who I would look at.”

There’s no reason he shouldn’t be given a chance to come and win at Auburn. And trust me, he would win. He would be the slam-dunk hire that we all were expecting once the powers that be paid $21 million to fire Gus Malzahn, ironically one of Freeze’s good friends.

This is how I described Freeze in the final part of my 2018 feature:

Publicly, he is a football coach who can be outspoken about his beliefs; a man who uses his fame to advance his platform; and a man who was part of a major investigation into his football program that led to violations and his eventual firing for personal transgressions.

Privately, you find the person who people cling to, a man who friends describe as a very genuine person through good and bad and someone whose sense of humor will have you crying in laughter. He’s a man who sticks to his conviction but would never judge others because he has his struggles as well, some that became extremely public. He’s charismatic, self-deprecating and has so many other assets that you appreciate in a human being.

Don’t make this more complicated than it is, Auburn. A man who is ready and prepared for the job is just waiting for the call and, if the Tigers don’t grab him, some SEC school will soon. Don’t let the opportunity pass by.

Auburn Coaching Search 6.0: With Napier out, who is now the favorite?

Billy Napier has taken his name out of the Auburn coaching search so who is now the favorite to land the job?

It was just hours ago when Billy Napier was the favorite to land the Auburn head coaching position.

Now, with reports being confirmed that Napier is out, the Tigers will have to cross him off the list and continue searching.

So who is left as candidates? Here’s a quick look along with their odds of getting hired.
