2021 Auburn Football Player Profile, Overview: No. 25 Colby Wooden

Auburn redshirt sophomore defensive lineman Colby Wooden will be looked upon to make opposing backfields his living room in 2021.

Name: Colby Wooden

Number: 25

Position: Defensive end

Class: Sophomore

Height: 6’5″

Weight: 278 lbs

Hometown: Lawrenceville, Georgia

High School: Archer

2020 stats: 42 total tackles (19 solo), 9.5 tackles for a loss, 4.0 sacks, 6.0 quarterback hurries, 1 pass broken up

Twitter: @CJW_21

Overview:

After a breakout season in 2020, Wooden is now the leader of this defensive line that has some question marks entering the season. Nonetheless, he is a pure playmaker that can get into the opposing backfield at will. That’s something new defensive coordinator Derek Mason and defensive line coach Nick Eason will be counting on him for in 2021.

If he stays healthy, the future is extremely bright for Wooden.

2021 Auburn football player profile, overview: No. 18 Nehemiah Pritchett

Junior cornerback Nehemiah Pritchett is part of an Auburn secondary that will be a major strength for the Tigers in 2021.

Name: Nehemiah Pritchett

Number: 18

Position: Cornerback

Class: Junior

Height: 6’1”

Weight: 179 lbs

Hometown: Jackson, AL

High School: Jackson

2020 stats: 25 tackles (17 solo), 10 passes broken up, 1 interception

Twitter: @NehemiahP_2019

Overview:

Pritchett was one of the breakout stars for the Tigers’ defense in 2020 and is expected to be even better in 2021. Look for the junior to see some time at cornerback ut his speciality is at the nickel position.

Already being looked at by NFL scouts and touted for his playmaking abilities, a solid season from Pritchett could lead to an early departure for the pros.

Lee Hunter named one of 247Sports freshmen to watch in SEC

The true freshman from Blount High School in Eight Mile, Alabama is expected to contribute immediately for Auburn in 2021.

Auburn needs some help along the defensive line. Could that assist come in the form of true freshman Lee Hunter?

The writers over at 247Sports think so as they have Hunter listed as one of the freshman in the SEC to watch during the 2021 season.

Auburn’s defensive tackle room is rather unproven, and Hunter, who ranked as the Tigers’ top overall signee in 2021, has an excellent chance to break into the rotation right away. Hunter brings college-ready strength to The Plains at 320 pounds, and his nastiness in the trenches pops up on film. There’s a need inside, too. In fact, nobody on the interior of Auburn’s defensive line finished with better than a 59 PFF Grade last year. Auburn is resetting at this spot, and Hunter has a great chance to play a lot even with UAB transfer Tony Fair joining the roster.

From Blount High School in Eight Miles, Alabama, Hunter was a four-star signee and ranked the No. 7 defensive tackle in the nation. He should contribute immediately as a key player in the trenches for Derek Mason’s defense.

Auburn cracks top 10 in ESPN’s future defense power rankings

ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg has Auburn’s defense in the top 10 of his future power rankings heading into the 2021 season.

There’s a new man in charge on the Plains of Auburn’s defense as Derek Mason has taken the throne after Kevin Steele made the Tigers one of the most fierce defenses in his six years and the expectations for Mason’s first defense is quite high.

While the defensive front has to work itself out, Auburn is more than loaded at the linebacker and secondary positions with Owen Pappoe, Zakoby McClain, Smoke Monday, Roger McCreary and the crew leading the way.

ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg thinks highly of the Tigers defense, ranking them No. 10 in his future power rankings.

Scouting the Tigers: Auburn didn’t fire head coach Gus Malzahn because of the defense, a unit that should continue to thrive under new coordinator Derek Mason. The Tigers lose some key parts — do-it-all safety Christian Tutt and linemen DaQuan Newkirk and Big Kat Bryant — but bring back one of the nation’s top linebacker groups and more than enough talent elsewhere. Junior Owen Pappoe and senior Zakoby McClain will lead the unit in 2021 after combining for 206 tackles, including seven sacks, last fall. Senior Chandler Wooten, who opted out in 2020, is back, and linebackers such as Cam Riley and Wesley Steiner should take over in 2022, along with sophomore edge rusher Derick Hall (3.5 sacks in 2020). Senior cornerback Roger McCreary (three interceptions, seven tackles for loss in 2020) is a nationally elite player and could pair with West Virginia transfer Dreshun Miller. Veteran safety Smoke Monday also returns. The long-term outlook is solid at cornerback (junior Nehemiah Pritchett, sophomore Jaylin Simpson) and at safety (sophomores Ladarius Tennison and Chris Thompson Jr.).

Mason’s development of the line is worth watching. Auburn will miss its departing players but returns sophomore end Colby Wooden, who earned SEC All-Freshman honors after recording 9.5 tackles for loss (four sacks) in 2020. Zykeivous Walker also saw playing time as a freshman end, and Auburn adds Dylan Brooks, ESPN’s No. 5 end and No. 18 overall recruit for 2021. The Tigers also pick up two coveted interior line recruits in Lee Hunter, a top-60 overall prospect, and Marquis Robinson. They join tackles such as senior Marquis Burks, junior Dre Butler and sophomore Jay Hardy. Auburn’s overall line depth looks very good through 2023.

It will be interesting to see how the defense comes along in Mason’s first season in charge.

Projecting Auburn’s defensive depth chart following spring practice

Auburn’s defense can be a force in Derek Mason’s first year as coordinator but some questions remain in the trenches.

Much like the rest of the Auburn program, the Tigers defense is undergoing major changes as Kevin Steele is gone and now it is Derek Mason’s time to lead the unit.

The great thing for Mason is that in two different areas — linebacker and secondary — he has plenty of stars and players waiting to be stars that are ready to put the hard-hitting mantra back in Auburn’s defense.

The only question for this defense comes up front as a lack of depth dots the defensive line.

In Auburn’s annual A-Day Game, it was the defense that looked like it was further ahead than the offense, so let’s take a look at where each position stands and our projected defensive depth chart following spring practice.

Projecting Auburn’s defensive depth chart for 2021

A lot of talent will be needed to be replaced up front for Auburn while the linebackers corps will serve as a strength.

Much like Auburn’s offense, the defensive side of the ball has taken some major hits with the transfer portal and entries into the NFL Draft.

Big Kat Bryant and Daquan Newkirk have now found new homes in the SEC at Tennessee and Florida, respectively, while Jamien Sherwood has decided to forego his senior season.

The good news is that the linebacker corps might be as deep and talented as ever especially with the return of Chandler Wooten who opted out of last season.

Derek Mason has his work cut out of him though as he tries to find the best 11 to put on the field for the Tigers in 2021. Here is a way-too-early projected depth chart for Auburn’s defense.
