New 247Sports bowl projections have Auburn still playing on New Year’s Day

Despite losing two games in a row Auburn is still slotted in a New Year’s Day bowl by 247Sports

[jwplayer 5ygkmZtY]

Auburn’s two-game losing streak hasn’t really cost the Tigers in any way when it comes to bowl projections.

247Sports released their latest projections after Week 13 of the college football season and still have Gus Malzahn’s team heading to Orlando to play in the Citrus Bowl. The only difference is that this week it is Northwestern that the Tigers are slotted to meet.

This could be a Top 15 team vs. unranked matchup in Orlando, a location Auburn is familiar with during bowl season. The Tigers have underperformed this fall relative to expectations while the Wildcats are an upset loss away from being unbeaten and likely ranked inside the Top 10.

Auburn and Northwestern have met once before, that coming in the 2010 Outback Bowl. The Tigers pulled out a 38-35 victory in what was a wild game.

The Hoosiers are currently 5-1 with their only loss coming at Ohio State, 42-35. They will be without star quarterback Michael Penix for the rest of the season after he tore his ACL in Saturday’s victory over Maryland this past Saturday.

The latest bowl projections from College Football News has Auburn playing Indiana in the Citrus Bowl on New Year’s Day.

Auburn took it on the chin this past Saturday in a 42-13 loss to rival Alabama. The Tigers look to rebound when they host No. 5/6 Texas A&M on Saturday in Jordan-Hare Stadium.

A win against the Aggies would likely improve the Tigers bowl projections but, as of right now, Gus Malzahn’s team is projected to play upstart Indiana from the Big Ten in the Vrbo Citrus Bowl in Orlando on January 1 by College Football News.

The Hoosiers’ only loss of the season came against No. 3 Ohio State in Columbus, a close 42-35 defeat to the Buckeyes. Tom Allen’s team will be without starting quarterback Michael Penix the rest of the year after he tore his ACL in the win over Maryland this past Saturday.

The Tigers are coming off 35-28 victory over Ole Miss on Saturday in Oxford.

[jwplayer GHlwpr8W-er0jUifI]

Auburn pulled off a 35-28 victory on Saturday against Ole Miss in Oxford as Bo Nix hit Seth Williams for a 58-yard touchdown to go ahead with just more than a minute left.

The Tigers were rewarded in ESPN’s latest bowl projections by one writer, Kyle Bonagura. The scribe has the Tigers going to the Citrus Bowl in Orlando to face the Big Ten’s Michigan. Auburn has played the Wolverines twice in the two program’s histories with the Tigers winning the 1984 Sugar Bowl 9-7 on three Al Del Greco field goals while Michigan defeated Auburn 31-28 in the 2001 Citrus Bowl.

His colleague, Mark Schlabach, didn’t give the Tigers much credit for the victory. He has Auburn traveling to Jacksonville for the Gator Bowl to face Virginia Tech. The Tigers and Hokies have met once before, that coming in the 2005 Sugar Bowl with Auburn holding on for a 16-13 victory to complete an undefeated season.

Updated 247Sports SEC bowl projections after Week 4

The updated 247Sports bowl projections have Auburn facing a familiar opponent.

[jwplayer soQ5NdbU]

It was not the best of days for Auburn on the football field on Saturday as the Tigers were upset 30-22 by South Carolina in Columbia.

The great people over at 247Sports took notice but held the Tigers in the bowl pecking order to face someone Gus Malzahn might not want to see: P.J. Fleck and the Minnesota Golden Gophers.

MUSIC CITY BOWL

The pick: Auburn vs. Minnesota

We first projected Gus Malzahn’s Tigers here last week despite a national ranking inside the Top 15 as a contender in the SEC West. Why? Auburn hadn’t shown much consistency on offense. That on again, off again attack showed up again over the weekend during a loss to South Carolina. From the Big Ten, Minnesota looks to challenge Wisconsin this fall on its side of the conference, but has a tough opener next weekend vs. Michigan.

If you don’t remember, Auburn and Minnesota met in this year’s Outback Bowl and the Big Ten team got the best of the Tigers in a 31-24 victory.

Here is where 247Sports has the rest of the SEC playing in bowl games.

ESPN updates bowl projections following Week 3 of SEC season

Auburn is slotted to travel south to the Sunshine State for its bowl game.

[jwplayer kyuJhM3C-er0jUifI]

Auburn pulled out a close 30-28 victory over Arkansas on Saturday in Jordan-Hare Stadium to improve to 2-1 on the young season.

While Bo Nix struggled, the star of the game for the Tigers was true freshman running back Tank Bigsby who set an Auburn freshman record with 268 all-purpose yards. The back rushed for 146 yards on 20 carries, caught four passes for 16 yards and returned four kickoffs for 106 yards.

Bigsby might get a chance to finish his freshman season against a Big Ten opponent, per ESPN’s latest bowl projections.

The two ESPN analysts have differing opinions on which bowl and which opponent Auburn will play, though, but both games will be played in the same stadium.

247Sports releases updated bowl projection for Auburn

The latest bowl projections have Auburn facing a familiar opponent in its bowl game.

Auburn took it on the chin on Saturday in Athens in a 27-6 defeat to Georgia as the Tigers gained only 216 yards of total offense and were dominated on both sides of the ball.

On Monday, 247Sports released its updated on bowl projections and …. sigh … Auburn fans will definitely not be happy about this.

Citrus Bowl

The pick: Auburn vs. Wisconsin

Boy, that was fun for a week. What happened to Mississippi State? From ending the nation’s longest winning streak to falling victim to Arkansas, a team that hadn’t beaten a league opponent in three years. Ouch. The Bulldogs move back this week in the SEC’s bowl pecking order and Auburn fills this slot. We’re projecting Wisconsin to win its side of the Big Ten, but not without a loss. The two-loss Badgers get to play in Orlando for New Years.

Okay, it’s not like we don’t like Badgers fans and all but isn’t everyone on both sides of this getting tired of this bowl matchup? It seems that the two match up after every other season but in reality the Tigers and Badgers have only met up three times since 2003. Still, it would be nice to play someone else besides Wisconsin.

247Sports projects Auburn facing another powerhouse in bowl game

The two teams haven’t met since 1991 when Auburn defeated Texas 14-10.

It is going to be a strange year for bowls as the Big Ten and Pac-12 have opted out of the 2020 college football season, yet there is still some good matchups that could be seen in the postseason.

247Sports posted its updated bowl projections for the 2020 season with Auburn facing another powerhouse program, one that has the tendency to describe themselves as “back.”

Texas vs. Auburn

The Big 12’s potential runner-up against a quality opponent from the SEC? Here’s a rarity pitting two respected programs. Ironically, the Longhorns and Tigers have met once before in a Florida-based bowl game, that coming in 1974 (Gator in Jacksonville). This would be an important game for both head coaches, too. There’s some sense of pressure surrounding Tom Herman and Gus Malzahn this fall as preseason contenders.

Not sure about you, but I would love to face the Longhorns in a bowl game and see how the Tigers fare against Herman’s team. The two teams haven’t met since 1991 when Auburn walked away with a 14-10 victory.
