Atticus Sappington named Big Ten Special Teams Player of the Week

Oregon Duck place kicker Atticus Sappington has been named the Big Ten Special Teams Player of the Week.

It would be natural for Oregon place kicker Atticus Sappington to circle September 14 on the Duck schedule.

That was the Civil War and Corvallis was his old stomping grounds, so of course he wanted to play well in front of some former fans of his.

Despite getting booed every time he stepped on the Reser Stadium turf, Sappington made all of his kicks, including two field goals in Oregon’s 49-14 win over the Beavers.

His efforts earned Sappington the Big Ten Special Teams Player of the Week honors. He also made all five of his extra-point attempts.

This makes it two straight weeks where an Oregon Duck has been the Special Teams Player of the Week. Kick returner Tez Johnson was honored last week in the 37-34 win over Boise State thanks to his 84-yard punt return for a touchdown.

So far this year, Sappington has been solid for the Ducks, hitting 4-of-5 field goals, and 13-of-14 extra points through the first three weeks.

SIGNED: West Linn kicker Gage Hurych stays home with the Ducks

SIGNED: West Linn kicker Gage Hurych stays home with the Ducks and will learn under the tutelage of Atticus Sappington.

Oregon has had quite a history with kids that go to West Linn High School. Players such as Payton Pritchard and Jackson Shelstad have worked out well for the Ducks.

But that’s on the hardwood.

The Ducks are trying their hand with a Lion on the gridiron with kicker Gage Hurych. He just signed his Letter of Intent to Oregon in the Class of 2024.

According to 247sports.com, Hurych is the No. 21 kicker in the country.

Odds are Hurych will use the 2024 season as a redshirt year as he learns the tools of the trade from transfer kicker Atticus Sappington, who is expected to be the Duck kicker in their inaugural season in the Big Ten.

The Ducks currently have the No. 3 recruiting class in the nation for the 2024 cycle, and the No. 1 class in the Big Ten Conference.

Oregon adds transfer K Atticus Sappington from Oregon State

Oregon has found their kicker for 2024: Atticus Sappington a junior transfer from Oregon State.

The Oregon Ducks have found their new kicker in former Oregon State Beavers kicker, Atticus Sappington. Sappington was one of many Beavers to enter the portal this offseason following conference uncertainty and a coaching change.

2024 will be Sappington’s junior season after two seasons at Oregon State. In 2023, Sappington was one of college football’s best kickers, making 13/14 field goal attempts with his only miss coming from greater than 40 yards. His dominance for the Beavers over the last two seasons earned him the nickname “Automatticus.”

Sappington comes to Oregon as the de facto replacement of Camden Lewis, who is out of eligibility. Over five seasons as the Ducks kicker, Lewis became Oregon’s all-time leading scorer. And while Lewis experienced struggles in 2023, he leaves Oregon with a great legacy and big shoes to fill.

Sappington won’t be the only kicking option for the Ducks in 2024. On the roster, the Ducks have Grant Meadors, who will be a redshirt freshman in 2024, and they add freshman Tyler Kinsman, one of the top punters and kickers in the class of 2024. It’s hard to say with certainty who will be kicking field goals for Oregon in 2024, but with Sappington’s experience kicking at the Power 5 level, I think he is the most likely candidate.
