The Hawks should play better, but the Celtics finished the season top 2 in defensive and offensive rating. They are a juggernaut on both ends of the court and should continue thriving in the series.

At (-550), they aren’t worth any play on the moneyline though.

The Hawks lost by 13, and quite frankly, G Trae Young couldn’t have played much worse.

He had 16 points but was just 5-for-18 from the field and 1-for-5 from deep, both drastically under his season-long efficiency averages. Young should bounce back and perform at least better.

The Hawks shot 38.8% from the field and 17.2% from deep. Boston is the better team in the series, but being more than a double-digit favorite is enough to take Atlanta to at least keep it remotely close. It did outscore Boston by 17 in the second half Sunday.

The Celtics were never above .500 from Dec. 8 to Jan. 17, struggling to find a groove on offense during that stretch. However, they’ve gone 13-5 since then and now sit sixth in the East.

I like the way they’re playing right now, but it’s hard to get behind them at -300 when they’ve had so many slip-ups against lesser opponents this season – including losses to the Indiana Pacers as 9.5-point favorites and Detroit Pistons as 12-point favorites in their last four games.

The probable returns of Kemba Walker and big Daniel Theis even the matchup for Boston at each position. Hawks bigs Clint Capela and Collins scored a combined 44 points on 84.2% shooting and added 19 boards vs. the Celtics Wednesday.

Kemba lights up Young: Kemba is averaging 26.8 points per game and shooting 42.9% from deep in four career games against Young. Also, the market is backing Boston because its loss to Atlanta Wednesday was more of a bad situation for the Celtics rather than a bad matchup.

Money line (ML)

Both teams are struggling mightily but the Hawks’ net rating is actually worse than the Celtics’ over the last six games for both teams. I was also much higher on Boston than Atlanta coming into the season, so I lean CELTICS (-120) for a half-unit.

Against the spread (ATS)

PASS on the spread because the money line isn’t much pricier.

Because the spread and money line are nearly identical, the ATS trend of Boston being 10-5 ATS with a plus-5.1 ATS margin in the second half of a back-to-back since the beginning of last season applies in this section.

Over/Under (O/U)

The OVER 223.5 (-110) is my favorite play in Hawks-Celtics. The star players for each squad balled out last season against each other. Celtics wings Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown both shot better than 50% from the field against the Hawks in the 2019-20 head-to-head series.

Atlanta PG Trae Young averaged 31.0 points on .442/.360/.882 shooting and PF John Collins scored 22.7 points per game on .650/.556/.917 shooting vs. Boston in 2019-20.

Also, Boston’s defense should be more affected by injuries than its offense. Theis is an average defensive big but he’s the best the Celtics have and Smart is one of the biggest difference-makers on defense in the league.

Boston is 27th in defensive field-goal percentage of attempts at the rim and Atlanta takes the 11th-highest volume of shots at the rim but is connecting at only the 20th-highest clip, according to CleaningTheGlass.com.

Finally, Atlanta excels at getting to the charity stripe and has the highest FTA/FGA rate while Boston is 25th in defensive FTA/FGA rate. TAKE OVER 223.5 (-110) for 1.25 units.
