Astros at Rangers picks and predictions

Prediction

Rangers 5, Astros 3

Moneyline

In the last 7 games between the 2 teams, they have alternated wins. The Rangers won on Saturday.

The Rangers are 27-16 at home and 21-21 overall against teams with a winning record. The Astros are 23-19 on the road, but are 21-25 against teams with winning records.

Heaney is coming off a bad start and was only OK in his other starts last month but the Rangers have won 6 out of his previous 8 starts.

Betting the Rangers on the moneyline isn’t a bad bed but their performance this season against the spread makes the positive odds there the better play.

PASS.

Run line/Against the spread

The Rangers are 51-32 ATS overall this season, the 2nd-best mark in the majors and are 20-14 ATS as home favorites. Five of their last 6 games have been by at least 2 runs. All 3 wins over the Astros this season have been by 2 or more runs.

All 6 of the Rangers’ wins in Heaney’s last 8 starts have been by multiple runs.

The Astros are 43-40 ATS overall and are 15-7 ATS as a road underdog.

BET RANGERS -1.5 (+140).

Over/Under

Neither game this series has reached 9 runs and only 2 of 5 meetings this season have. Four of the Astros’ last 7 games have had more than 9 total runs whil 7 of the Rangers’ last 10 games have not reached 10 total runs.

BET UNDER 9 (-105).

Houston Astros at Texas Rangers odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Monday’s Houston Astros at Texas Rangers odds and lines, with MLB expert picks and predictions.

The Houston Astros (7-8) are on the road to open a 4-game set with the Texas Rangers (5-10) Monday. First pitch from Globe Life Field is set for 8:05 p.m. ET. Let’s analyze Tipico Sportsbook‘s lines around the Astros vs. Rangers nickname odds with MLB picks and predictions.

Season series: First meeting. Houston took 14 of 19 meetings with Texas in 2021.

The Astros salvaged an 8-7 extra-inning win Sunday, but still dropped their 3-game home set against the Toronto Blue Jays. Houston has lost its last 3 series against the Blue Jays, Los Angeles Angels and at the Seattle Mariners.

The Rangers had a 3-game win streak snapped when they were held scoreless Sunday in a 2-0 loss at the Oakland Athletics. Texas, which picked up its first series win of the season in Oakland, was 1-5 in its first homestand this year.

Astros vs. Rangers projected starters

LHP Framber Valdez vs. RHP Dane Dunning

Framber Valdez (1-1, 4.50 ERA) makes his fourth start. He has allowed 7 ER on 12 H and 10 BB with 12 K in 14 IP.

  • Got rocked for 6 ER on 8 H with 4 BB with just 3 K in 4 1/3 IP against the Los Angeles Angels in his last start Tuesday.
  • Is 1-0 with 1 ER allowed in 9 2/3 IP in 2 road starts this season.

Dane Dunning (0-1, 5.68 ERA) makes his fourth start. He has allowed 8 ER on 17 H and 7 BB with 14 K in 12 2/3 IP.

  • Allowed 3 ER on 6 H and 3 BB with 3 K through 4 IP in his last start at the Seattle Mariners Wednesday.
  • Was 0-1 with 5 ER on 11 H and 3 BB with 7 K in 6 IP in 1 start and 1 relief appearance versus the Astros in 2021.

Astros vs. Rangers picks and predictions

Prediction

Astros 5, Rangers 3

Money line

Monday should propose a get-right spot for the Astros who have started the season rather sluggishly. The Astros have been held back by a well below-average .240 BABIP in the early going, but have the power and prowess at the plate to straighten things out.

Houston also sends the better starting pitcher to the mound and has the superior bullpen.

Catch HOUSTON (-145) before it gets bet up much further.

Run line/Against the spread

I don’t think you want to get too carried away here — Valdez was absolutely batted around last time out and Dunning has been pretty consistent in not letting things get out of hand through his first 3 starts.

Still, with plus-money value on the table and Houston pegged as the clearly better of the teams you may want to consider a partial unit play on HOUSTON -1.5 (+120).

Over/Under

If this came in at 7.5 I’d be much more tempted to pursue an Over wager, but 8.5 feels like a sharp number.

Valdez has the ability to toss a gem, although he ended last season on shaky ground, and the Astros’ bats have had some hard luck that may not necessarily get them over the hump. Dunning may limit things enough to require Houston to tag the bullpen for a few runs to push this over the number.

The wind will be blowing in Monday at Globe Life Field, and that’s enough for me to PASS on the total.

Houston Astros at Texas Rangers odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Tuesday’s Houston Astros at Texas Rangers odds and lines, with MLB expert picks and predictions.

The Houston Astros (84-59) and Texas Rangers (53-90) play the second game of a four-game set Tuesday at Globe Life Field. First pitch is scheduled for 8:05 p.m. ET. Let’s analyze the lines around the Astros vs. Rangers odds with MLB picks and predictions.

Astros RHP Zack Greinke (11-5, 3.66 ERA) makes his 28th start of the season. He has a 1.15 WHIP, 6.2 K/9 and 1.8 BB/9 through 159 2/3 IP.

  • Making his first start since Aug. 29 after testing positive for COVID-19.
  • Roughed up for 6 runs, 9 hits and 2 walks with just 1 strikeout over 4 innings in a loss at Texas last time out (Aug. 29) as he dropped consecutive starts for the first time this season.

Rangers RHP Jordan Lyles (8-11, 5.43 ERA) makes his 27th start and 29th appearance. He has a 1.44 WHIP, 7.2 K/9 and 2.9 BB/9 through 155 2/3 IP.

  • Yielded just 1 run, 3 hits and 2 walks with 3 strikeouts across 7 innings in a win at the Arizona Diamondbacks Sept. 7, and he has won each of his past two outings.
  • Has posted an 0-1 record, 7.84 ERA and .326 opponent batting average across 10 1/3 IP in two starts vs. Houston this season.

Prediction

Rangers 6, Astros 5

Money line (ML)

I like the RANGERS (+190) for the upset for a multitude of reasons. A chance to nearly double up is very attractive.

First, Greinke is coming back from a bout with COVID-19 after being sidelined for a couple of weeks. He might not be terribly sharp. It’s uncertain what his stamina will be like. As it stands, he has lost his past two outings, his first two-game losing streak of the season.

Second, the Rangers have actually been getting surprise production from Lyles lately, as he has won two straight starts.

Third, with Category 1 Hurricane Nicholas making landfall just south of Houston Tuesday morning, the Astros might be a little distracted.

Run line/Against the spread (ATS)

RANGERS +2.5 (-125) are a good value on the run line if you’re not quite feeling them straight up and would like a little insurance.

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 8.5 (-135) is the best play on the board. Greinke and Lyles have been very giving lately, and the Over connected in Monday’s series opener. In fact, the Over was in the can by the end of the third inning with 10 total runs on the board, mostly thanks to the ‘Stros.

The Over is 10-4-1 in the previous 15 meetings, and 9-3-2 in the past 14 battles in Arlington.

Houston Astros at Texas Rangers odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Sunday’s Houston Astros at Texas Rangers odds and lines, with MLB picks and predictions.

The Houston Astros (77-52) face the Texas Rangers (44-85) in the third and final game of their series as they seek the sweep Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 2:35 p.m. ET at Globe Life Field. Let’s analyze the lines around the Astros vs. Rangers odds with MLB picks and predictions.

Astros RHP Zack Greinke (11-4, 3.41 ERA) makes his 27th start. He has a 1.11 WHIP, 1.7 BB/9 and 6.3 K/9 over an AL-leading 155 2/3 IP.

  • Is 3-0 with a 3.38 ERA through three starts against the Rangers.
  • Has a 1.42 ERA across his last three starts.

Rangers LHP Taylor Hearn (3-4, 4.08 ERA) makes his sixth start and his 37th appearance. He has a 1.33 WHIP, 4.3 BB/9 and 9.0 K/9 through 70 2/3 IP.

  • Pitched 3 scoreless innings in one start against the Astros.
  • The Rangers are 2-3 through his five starts.

Prediction

Astros 6, Rangers 2

Money line (ML)

The previous four series this season between the two teams were sweeps. The Rangers swept a three-game home series May 21-23 while the Astros have swept the other three series and are 11-3 against Texas.

The Rangers have lost nine of their last 11 games; the Astros have won seven of their last nine games.

Take the ASTROS (-230).

FANTASY BASEBALL: Serious about winning your league? Sign up for BaseballHQ.com to dominate the competition. Subscribe now!

Run line/Against the spread (ATS)

The Rangers have the third-worst ATS record in the majors at 56-73 ATS. They are 29-35 ATS at home, 6-8 ATS against the Astros and 4-7 ATS in their last 11 games.

The Astros are 5-8 ATS in their last 13 games, 66-63 ATS overall and 32-31 ATS on the road. 10 of their last 12 wins have been by 3 or more runs.

Take the ASTROS -2.5 (+105).

Over/Under (O/U)

Eight of the 14 games this season so far between both teams have had totals of 9 or more runs.

Only two of Greinke’s last nine starts have had totals of 9 or more runs.

However, six of the Rangers’ last seven have had totals of 9 or more runs and six of the last nine for the Astros have reached that mark, too.

Greinke will keep the Rangers’ bats at bay. The question is how many runs the Astros will score. They have scored more than 5 runs only once in their last six games.

Take UNDER 8.5 (-107).

Houston Astros at Texas Rangers odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Saturday’s Houston Astros at Texas Rangers odds and lines, with MLB picks and predictions.

The Houston Astros (26-19) face AL West rival Texas Rangers (20-27) Saturday in Game 2 of their three-game set at Globe Life Field. First pitch is scheduled for 4:05 p.m. ET. Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook‘s lines around the Astros vs. Rangers odds with MLB picks and predictions.

Texas took Game 1 of the series 7-5 in extra innings thanks to a 3-run walk-off home run by CF Adolis Garcia in the bottom of the 10th.

The win snapped a three-game losing skid for the Rangers, who’ve lost eight of their last 10. which includes a sweep by the Astros in their four-game series last weekend. Conversely, Houston is 8-2 in its previous 10 games.

Season series: Astros 4-1.

RHP Lance McCullers Jr. is on the mound for the Astros. McCullers is 3-1 with a 2.70 ERA (46 2/3 IP, 14 ER), 1.17 WHIP, 4.2 BB/9 and 10.0 K/9 across eight starts.

  • Last outing: No-decision in 6 IP with 0 ER, 5 H, 2 BB and 5 K in Houston’s 6-2 win vs. the Rangers Sunday.
  • Career vs. the Rangers: 1-4 with a 3.73 ERA (50 2/3 IP, 21 ER), 1.26 WHIP and 13.1 K/9 over 10 starts.
    • Vs. Rangers on the current roster: 97 at-bats with a .186/.231/.289 slash line, 35/6 K/BB, 2 HR and 7 RBIs.

RHP Jordan Lyles gets the start for the Rangers. Lyles is 2-3 with a 5.93 ERA (44 IP, 29 ER), 1.55 WHIP, 3.3 BB/9 and 8.6 K/9 across nine starts.

  • Last outing: Win, 5-2, in 6 IP with 1 ER, 6 H, 1 BB and 6 K Monday vs. the New York Yankees.
  • Career vs. the Astros: 1-1 with a 3.47 ERA (23 1/3 IP, 9 ER), 0.94 WHIP and 5.4 K/9 over three starts and two bullpen outings.
    • Vs. Astros on the current roster: 75 at-bats with a .240/.260/.427 slash line, 10/2 K/BB, 3 HR and 6 RBIs.

Astros at Rangers odds, lines, picks and prediction

MLB odds courtesy of BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports for a full list. Odds last updated at 7:40 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Astros -200 (bet $200 to win $100) | Rangers +170 (bet $100 to win $170)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Astros -1.5 (-130) | Rangers +1.5 (+105)
  • Over/Under: 9 (O: -115 | U: -105)

Prediction

Rangers 6, Astros 4

Money line (ML)

Slight “LEAN” to the RANGERS (+170) for a one-fifth unit if at all because their run line is a wiser play, but Lyles has handled this daunting Astros lineup well when facing them and McCullers is far less effective on the road.

For instance, McCullers’ ERA is more than two runs higher on the road compared to home starts, McCullers has a 1.43 road WHIP vs. a 1.08 home WHIP, a 14-18 record in away starts and 21-8 at home.

FANTASY BASEBALL: Serious about winning your league? Sign up for BaseballHQ.com to dominate the competition. Subscribe now!

Run line/Against the spread (ATS)

BET the RANGERS +1.5 (+105) for 1 unit because Lyles should enter this game with some pep in his step after defeating the Yankees in his last start and Texas has a 3-2 run line record vs. Houston so far this year.

Furthermore, we cashed a run line ticket on the Rangers last Saturday vs. the Astros when they scored four runs in the top of the 8th to “sneak into the backdoor”.

Also, advanced pitching numbers indicate Texas’ bullpen is average to above-average while Houston’s is slightly below. In fact, the Rangers relievers have a better WAR, xFIP and SIERA than the Astros.

Over/Under (O/U)

PASS with a slight “lean” to the Over because of McCullers’ aforementioned road struggles, and despite my earlier blurb on Lyles, he’s still leading the majors in earned runs allowed and facing a top-5 lineup in baseball.
