Alabama Baseball hiring former Maryland staffer as assistant coach

The Alabama baseball team is hiring former Maryland assistant coach Anthony Papio as a full-time assistant coach for the Crimson Tide.

The Alabama baseball program is hiring former Maryland assistant coach Anthony Papio as a full-time assistant coach on Rob Vaughn’s staff.

Papio played for the Terrapins from 2012-2016. Following his playing career, Papio went into coaching. In 2017, he was serving as a student assistant coach with the Terrapins. After five years of fulfilling that role, Papio became a full-time assistant coach.

Over the course of his coaching career, Papio has helped coach the outfielders and has coordinated the Terps’ running game, according to Maryland’s official website.

Papio will be the second full-time Alabama assistant hired to Rob Vaughn’s staff. The other is former Alabama interim head coach Jason Jackson. Jackson will return to serve as the team’s pitching coach as well as being the team’s associate head coach.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow the Alabama baseball program.

Alabama basketball introduces new assistant, Austin Claunch

Alabama men’s basketball program announces the arrival of former Nicholls State head coach

After losing all three of his assistants to head coaching opportunities this spring, the biggest challenge Nate Oats faces this offseason is filling out his coaching staff again. The Crimson Tide had one of the best staff in the country in 2022-2023, especially on the recruiting trail, so filling these jobs has been no easy task.

Alabama officially announced the addition of Austin Claunch, the former Nicholls State head coach to the staff. Claunch is a home run hire for Oats as he is only 33 years old and led Nicholls State to back-to-back regular season conference titles in 2021 and 2022. He also led the Colonels to their only NIT appearance in program history.

Claunch will be a massive piece in reshaping Alabama’s roster ahead of the 2023-2024 season after a handful of departures, including All-American Brandon Miller. On and off the court, Oats continues to show the Alabama faithful why he is the right man for the job.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow Austin Claunch and the Alabama basketball program throughout the off-season.

Crimson Tide add former Nicholls State head coach Austin Claunch to the MBB staff

Nate Oats and Alabama MBB land a massive hire to join MBB staff

After maybe the best season in the history of the Alabama Crimson Tide basketball program, Nate Oats is back on the recruiting trail, but this time it’s for assistant coaches.

Oats and the Crimson Tide are in unprecedented waters after losing all three assistants from the 2022-2023 team to head coaching positions elsewhere. Charlie Henry departed for Georgia Southern, Bryan Hodgson to Arkansas State and Antoine Pettway to Kennesaw State. Oats’ staff was a key part of the Tide’s success this year, especially recruiting, and they will be greatly missed.

Fortunately, Oats is already on the move and making new hires to fill the three positions. Alabama is expected to add Nicholls State head coach, Austin Claunch, to the staff as an assistant. Claunch has been incredibly successful at only 33 years old, going 51-17 in conference play over the past four years with two league titles.

Joining the Tide is a very attractive position for all coaches after seeing them churn out three head coaches in one offseason. Oats will have some major changes to make to the roster, but he needs to get some help with the coaching staff first.

Alabama MBB assistant coach Antoine Pettway hired as HC of Kennesaw State

Alabama MBB loses key assistant coach Antoine Pettway as he departs for HC position at Kennesaw State

Now more than ever it is time to see what Alabama Crimson Tide head basketball coach [autotag]Nate Oats[/autotag] is made of. Oats has won the SEC regular season and tournament and made multiple sweet sixteen’s, but getting the Tide ready for 2023-2024 will be his toughest task yet. Now, he will have to do it without three assistant coaches. Kennesaw State announced the hiring of Antoine Pettway.

Not only have the Tide lost arguably the best player in program history, Brandon Miller, to the NBA draft, but guys like Jaden Bradley and Nimari Burnett have departed via the transfer portal. The roster will look completely different next year, but that might not even be the hardest part of the offseason for Oats.

Oats will now be losing his third assistant this offseason as Pettway will take over as head coach at Kennesaw State. Pettway was a massive recruiter for the Tide, so this loss is a painful one. This speaks to Alabama’s growth as a program, considering all three of Oats’ assistants left the program this Spring to take on their own head coaching roles.

Kennesaw State to meet with Alabama assistant Antoine Pettway for HC opening

Kennesaw State is scheduled to meet with Alabama assistant coach Antoine Pettway for its head coaching vacancy.

Alabama assistant coach Antoine Pettway is scheduled to meet with Kennesaw State officials on Thursday regarding the team’s head coaching vacancy.

Pettway has played and coached for the Crimson Tide. He helped lead Alabama to three NCAA Tournament appearances as a player. As a coach, he has played a crucial role in helping Alabama land some of the nation’s top prospects and developing them for the next level.

Several of the players that fit into both categories are Collin Sexton, John Petty, and Jaden Shackelford. Each helped lead the Crimson Tide to NCAA Tournament appearances.

Pettway is one of the more vocal members on the coaching staff and plays a key role in helping Alabama prepare for its opponents. He is a fan-favorite among the Alabama community.

Kennesaw State made its debut in the NCAA Tournament in 2023. The Owls fell in the first round to No. 3 seed Xavier. Following the season, head coach Amir Abdur-Rahim accepted the head coaching job at South Florida.

Pettway is an intriguing option given his assistant coaching experience and success as a recruiter. If Pettway were to be offered and accept the job, he would become the third assistant coach to leave Alabama this offseason for a head coaching opportunity. The other two being Bryan Hodgson (Arkansas State) and Charlie Henry (Georgia Southern).

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow the latest news surrounding the Alabama basketball program.

Vikings add five coaches, finalize 2023 staff

The #Vikings hired five assistant coaches on Tuesday, locking in their coaching staff for the 2023 season

The Minnesota Vikings added five assistant coaches to their coaching staff on Tuesday, locking in the administrative portion of their gameday roster. Among the new hires were defensive assistant Imarjaye Albury, assistant inside linebackers coach Thad Bogardus, and assistant special teams coach Dalmin Gibson.

Albury was a scout in the Vikings organization last season and is entering his fourth season on the coaching staff after taking a brief respite from his role as an assistant defensive line coach in Minnesota from February 2020 to June 2022. Joining him on defense will be Bogardus, who served as the Los Angeles Rams’ outside linebackers coach in 2022, where he coached the likes of Leonard Floyd and Ernest Jones.

Gibson is making his first appearance on staff at the NFL level, joining the Vikings after a successful stint at Southern Illinois University where he served as the Saluki’s special teams coordinator and defensive ends coach last season.

Others hired by the team on Tuesday were Pat Hill, who will serve as the assistant defensive line coach, and Michael Hutchings, who joins the team as their new assistant defensive backs coach. Hill is a veteran coach with experience at both the collegiate and NFL levels, having served last as the Atlanta Falcons’ offensive line coach in 2013. Hutchings was the outside linebackers coach for the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers last year, and previously held roles at the University of Oregon and the University of Southern California as a defensive analyst.

These signings should serve to shore up Minnesota’s staff, and give the team leverage to continue developing the young talent on their roster.

Alabama assistant coach Charlie Henry set to become Georgia Southern’s head coach

Alabama assistant coach Charlie Henry is set to become the next head coach at Georgia Southern. Henry has been on Alabama’s coaching staff since 2019.

Alabama assistant coach Charlie Henry is set to become Georgia Southern’s next head coach. According to Nick Kelly of Tuscaloosa News, Henry will remain on the Alabama coaching staff throughout the entirety of the Crimson Tide’s postseason run.

Henry joined the Alabama coaching staff in 2019. He had previously served as an assistant coach with Iowa State and the Chicago Bulls. In addition, he was an assistant on Nate Oats’ staff at Romulus High School from 2009-2010.

Henry is well-known for his defensive coaching style. He has been one of the key assistants on Alabama’s staff along with other key assistants Antoine Pettway and Bryan Hodgson.

His first head coaching opportunity will come next season at Georgia Southern. The Eagles finished this past season with a 17-16 record and seventh in the Sun Belt Conference. Henry’s emphasis on defense could help the Eagles be competitive sooner rather than later.

Cowboys’ defensive coordinator Dan Quinn named Assistant Coach of the Year

The Pro Football Writers of America named Dan Quinn the Assistant Coach of the Year after turning around the Cowboys defense in 2021. | From @StarConscience

The news surrounding Cowboys’ defensive coordinator Dan Quinn on Thursday was plentiful. After interviewing for several head coaching jobs, Quinn informed teams that he’s staying with the Cowboys in 2022. That’s not all though, as the Pro Football Writers of America have named him the Assistant Coach of the Year for the 2021 season.

Quinn joins rookie linebacker Micah Parsons as a PFWA award winner as the 12th overall pick received Rookie of the Year and Defensive Rookie of the Year honors on Tuesday.

The man who was the architect of the “Legion of Boom” during his time as the defensive coordinator with the Seattle Seahawks which produced the NFL’s top defensive in 2013 and 2014 worked wonders with the Cowboys this season. After giving up a franchise-record 473 points and ranking 31st against the run in 2020, the Cowboys’ defense finished as the top unit in turnovers and limiting conversions on third down this season under Quinn’s leadership.

Quinn now has the challenge of keeping his unit formidable next season which won’t be easy with so many free agents on the defensive side of the ball for Dallas set to hit the open market in March.

Lakers announce hiring of assistants David Fizdale, John Lucas III, two more to training staff

The Los Angeles Lakers announced the hiring of two assistant coaches and two training staff coaches, including David Fizdale.

The Los Angeles Lakers announced Wednesday the hiring of David Fizdale, John Lucas III, Roger Sancho and Ed Streit, who got a promotion, to the coaching staff.

Fizdale, a former head coach, will be an assistant coach with an end-of-the-bench role on Frank Vogel’s staff. The deal with Fizdale was initially reported earlier in the summer after Jason Kidd departed for the Dallas Mavericks, but it is now official.

Lucas III was initially reported earlier in the month, and he is expected to have a role with player development and is an experienced voice in the locker room. His father said Lucas III has a long relationship with LeBron James.

Sancho comes in to be the head athletic trainer for the team, an area of struggle for the Lakers last season as injuries piled up towards the latter half of the year. Sancho recently spent the last seven seasons with the Golden State Warriors, with the last five coming as an assistant athletic trainer.

Streit promotes to the head strength and conditioning coach after being an assistant in that role since 2019-20.

Jets coach Greg Knapp dead at 58 following bike accident

Jets coach Gregg Knapp died Thursday morning, just days after a bicycle accident in California left him in critical condition.

Jets passing game specialist Greg Knapp died Thursday morning in the hospital. His agent, Jeff Sperbeck, confirmed the news to Mike Klis of Denver’s 9News.

Knapp, 58, was hit by a car on Saturday in California while riding his bike. The accident left the longtime NFL coach in critical condition. Knapp was rendered unconscious immediately and did not regain consciousness, according to Klis.

Knapp was an NFL coach for the past 24 years, most recently as the Falcons quarterbacks coach from 2018-2020. Robert Saleh hired him to join the Jets this past offseason. Knapp previously worked with the quarterbacks on the Broncos, Raiders, Texans, Seahawks and 49ers.

The Jets released statements from the Knapp family, Saleh and Woody Johnson following Knapp’s death.

Knapp is survived by his wife, Charlotte, and three daughters.
