A former Nebraska baseball player has been named the South Atlantic League Player of the Week. Brice Matthews earned the honor on Monday afternoon.

In the last week, Matthews hit .462 with four home runs, eight runs scored, and five stolen bases for the Asheville Tourists. He is currently ranked as the No. 3 prospect in the Houston Astros organization.

Matthews played at Nebraska from 2021-23. In three seasons, he hit .305 with a .424 on-base percentage and a .470 slugging percentage. He also had 32 home runs, 130 RBI, and 39 stolen bases.

The middle infielder was selected by the Houston Astros in the first round with the 28th overall pick in the 2023 MLB June Amateur Draft.

Former Vol Drew Gilbert assigned to Asheville.

Former Vol Drew Gilbert was assigned to the Asheville Tourists on Monday.

The Tourists are a High-A affiliate of the Houston Astros in Asheville, North Carolina. Asheville competes in the South Atlantic League.

Gilbert was selected by Houston in the first round (No. 28 overall) of the 2022 MLB draft.

Gilbert appeared in 58 games for the Vols in 2022, totaling 11 home runs, 70 RBIs, 60 runs, 72 hits, 21 doubles, four triples, 33 walks and four stolen bases. He started 57 contests during the 2022 campaign.

Gilbert came to Tennessee from Stillwater High School in Stillwater, Minnesota.

After being drafted, he debuted for Florida Complex League Astros’ Orange team in August 2022.

Former Tennessee player Zach Daniels hit his first home run of the 2022 season Thursday.

Daniels went 1-for-5 and totaled one home run, one RBI, one run and two strikeouts for the Asheville Tourists.

The Asheville Tourists are a High-A affiliate minor league team of the Houston Astros. Asheville plays in the South Atlantic League.

Daniels was selected by Houston in the 2020 Major League Baseball draft. He was selected in the fourth round with the 131st overall pick.

Daniels played for the Vols from 2018-2020. He appeared in 83 games with 54 starts. The outfielder totaled 13 home runs and 44 RBIs with a .225 batting average during his Tennessee career.
