Look: Chargers media day 2023 highlights

Scroll through to see highlights from Chargers Media Day 2023.

The Chargers are on a warpath heading into the 2023 season, and with their offseason program grinding to a halt, the team showcased their players’ looks at media day as they got pictures and videos to use in upcoming promotional material.

With some of the best uniforms in the NFL, Los Angeles highlighted a few players who should make sparks fly during the new season, including Justin Herbert, Derwin James, Joey Bosa and Keenan Allen among others.

Los Angeles will count on them to buoy their squads on both sides of the ball when the regular season begins in September, so their inclusion as featured members of the team’s production day is a no-brainer.

With threads like these on, they will certainly sport a fashionable style as they seek to lift the Chargers to their first playoff win since 2018.

Former Patriots CB Asante Samuel responds to Matthew Judon callout

Asante Samuel responded to Matthew Judon’s recent callout.

Asante Samuel isn’t letting Matthew Judon have the last word.

The former New England Patriots cornerback came under fire by Judon on Thursday after telling Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson to steer clear of playing for Patriots coach Bill Belichick.

“Lamar Jackson, my brother trust me you donā€™t want to play for Belichick,” Samuel posted on social media.Ā

That comment prompted Judon, one of the locker room leaders for the Patriots, to clap back in defense of his coach. Samuel has made a habit of taking shots at Belichick on social media in the past, but this time, Judon wasn’t letting him get away with it.

“Hush up. Itā€™s different over here,” Judon posted.Ā

There was obviously no way Samuel was going to go away quietly after that response. So he sent off a slew of tweets in response on Friday.

Yikes.

This isn’t the first time Samuel has criticized Belichick, and whether Judon or anyone else stands up or not, it probably won’t be the last.

Former Patriots star warns Ravens QB Lamar Jackson about playing for HC Bill Belichick

A former Patriots star warned Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson about playing for Bill Belichick

The Baltimore Ravens are still in a stalemate with quarterback Lamar Jackson, with no end to the situation in sight. The star signal caller revealed that he requested a trade on March 2nd, and many have begun speculating on what his next team could be if he’s moved.

One team that has been popular in conversations is the New England Patriots, who currently have Mac Jones as their starting quarterback. Hover, a former New England star in cornerback Asante Samuel warned Jackson about playing with Patriots HC Bill Belichick in a tweet that caused plenty of controversy.

Matthew Judon claps back at Asante Samuel for Bill Belichick criticism

Matthew Judon isn’t having the Bill Belichick criticism from ex-Patriot Asante Samuel.

Matthew Judon wasn’t having the coach Bill Belichick disrespect on Thursday, even if it came from a former New England Patriots player.

The linebacker clapped back at ex-Patriots cornerback Asante Samuel on social media, following a direct shot earlier in the day at coach Bill Belichick. Samuel told Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson, who has been tied to the Patriots recently in trade rumors, to steer clear of Belichick.

Samuel has made a habit of taking shots at Belichick through social media, but this time, Judon stepped in and shut the negative talk down.

“Hush up. Itā€™s different over here,” Judon posted in response to Samuel.

Judon has served as the Patriots’ best hype man throughout the offseason in an effort to recruit players. That doesn’t look to be changing anytime soon, no matter who opposes the team.

Asante Samuel warned Lamar Jackson about possibly playing for Bill Belichick

“my brother trust me you don’t want to play for Belichick”

Asante Samuel knows a little bit about Bill Belichick.

The four-time Pro Bowler spent the first five years of his NFL career playing for the legendary head coach, growing from fourth round draft pick to first-team All-Pro in New England. His two Super Bowl rings came in the first two seasons of his career. He was a part of the only team in league history to record a 16-0 regular season record.

But Samuel does not revere Bill Belichick, at least as much as the rest of the gridiron universe. Brandon Marshall recently called him out for claiming the Patriots’ success was all Tom Brady’s responsibility on his I Am Athlete podcast. On Thursday, with the Pats kinda/sorta in need of a quarterback and Lamar Jackson publicly available via trade, the retired cornerback cast a warning into the Twitterverse.

Belichick is famously not for everyone. His autocratic approach makes him a difficult coach to please and has drawn criticism from former players like Cassius Marsh, Darrelle Revis, Brandon Spikes and, allegedly, Reggie Wayne. Now Samuel is firmly in that camp.

Samuel was great in New England and elsewhere after joining the Philadelphia Eagles, then Atlanta Falcons, in free agency. Between 2006 and 2012 he had 44 interceptions and a ludicrous 120 passes defensed. While he played for good teams after leaving New England, he wasn’t able to reach the postseason heights he enjoyed under Belichick. Samuel was 11-3 in the playoffs in five years as a Patriot and 3-4 in the final six years of his career.

Still, few players can relate to being a star and playing under the notoriously frosty head coach quite like Asante Samuel. Samuel took his opportunity to leave and signed a six-year, $60 million deal with Philly after playing out his rookie contract and then a season under the franchise tag. Now he’s warning Jackson not to let himself wind up in a similar trap.

Ex-Patriot advises Lamar Jackson to steer clear of Bill Belichick

Ex-Patriots two-time Super Bowl champ wants Lamar Jackson to steer clear of playing for Bill Belichick.

A former New England Patriots two-time Super Bowl champion is advising Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson to steer clear of coach Bill Belichick.

Jackson was linked to the Patriots through a text from rapper Meek Mill to Patriots owner Robert Kraft, stating the former league MVP wanted to come to New England. Now, four-time Pro Bowler and former Patriots cornerback Asante Samuel is advising against it.

In a social media post on Thursday, Samuel suggested Jackson wouldn’t want to play for Belichick.

“Lamar Jackson, my brother trust me you donā€™t want to play for Belichick,” Samuel said in the post.Ā

Samuel has been highly critical of the Patriots over the years, including saying Belichick was “just another coach” without legendary quarterback Tom Brady under center.

Not everyone that came up in the Patriots dynasty is a fan of Belichick, and Samuel is clearly one of those players. As of right now, New England is not expected to pursue Jackson.

Patriots’ history with the franchise tag under Bill Belichick

Here’s a look at the Patriots’ franchise tag history under Bill Belichick.

New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick rarely leans on the franchise tag in present-day negotiations with pending free agents. There was a time when he used it frequently as a negotiating tactic, but in the last eight years, only one player has been franchise tagged by the Patriots.

That run of not tagging players will likely continue in 2023 with wide receiver Jakobi Meyers and cornerback Jonathan Jones being the only legitimate tag candidates on the roster.

That isn’t to suggest both players don’t deserve pay raises. But it’s hard envisioning Belichick and the Patriots footing the bill for a rising price tag at positions they can address through free agency and the draft.

Still, for fun, let’s take a look at all of the Patriots players that have been franchise tagged over the years by Belichick.

Al Michaels calls playoff interceptions against Jags by Asante Samuel and Asante Samuel Jr.

Broadcast history repeated itself for Al Michaels and the Samuel family

Now, this is some brilliant research and preparation.

Timothy Burke — @bubbaprog on Twitter — posted a fantastic blended video that mixes Al Michaels’ calls with Saturday’s AFC Wild-Card game in Jacksonville and a playoff game 17 years and 7 days ago.

In 2006, the New England Patriots were playing the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Byron Leftwich threw a pass that was intercepted by Asante Samuel and turned into a pick-six.

Fast forward to Saturday, this time in Jacksonville, and Trevor Lawrence threw three first-quarter interceptions, two to Asante Samuel Jr., son of the Patriots DB who picked Leftwich more than a decade ago.

Samuel Jr. made it a 2023 hat trick, picking off Lawrence in the second quarter as the Chargers were blowing the game open.

Former Patriots Super Bowl champ questioning Bill Belichick’s legacy after loss to Raiders

One of Belichick’s former players is now questioning his legacy as the all-time great.

Asante Samuel, a former New England Patriots two-time Super Bowl champion and Bill Belichick player, is beginning to question the very legacy of his former head coach.

The former All-Pro cornerback was once considered by many as one of the best defensive backs in football. And yet, despite playing his best years under Belichick, he refuses to put the legendary coach on a pedestal as the greatest of all time.

Following the Patriots’ humiliating loss to the Las Vegas Raiders, Samuel questioned Belichick’s legacy, particularly the years without Tom Brady, in a social media post.

He asked, “Will Belichick be considered one of the greatest ever if he canā€™t win without Brady?!”

Some will say the Brady over Belichick argument will always be a thing until the Patriots coach proves he can win without the greatest quarterback of all time.

Brady left New England and won a Super Bowl in his first year with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Meanwhile, Belichick’s Patriots have yet to win even one playoff game.

Others might argue none of that even matters given Belichick’s complete body of work. Whatever the case may be, it’s clear that not everyone, including former players, view the Patriots coach as the undisputed all-time great.

Tedy Bruschi calls out former teammate for Bill Belichick comments

Tedy Bruschi thinks his former teammate’s dig at Bill Belichick was “ridiculous”

New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick has faced plenty of criticism for his handling of the teamā€”some warranted and some that seems to go a bit too far off the deep end.

Former Patriots cornerback Asante Samuel’s recent comments fall in the latter category.

Following the Patriots’ embarrassing blowout loss at home to the Chicago Bears, Samuel called Belichick an “average coach” without Tom Brady on social media. It was a harsh jab at a coach coming off a season where he took the team to the playoffs with a rookie quarterback under center.

Former longtime Patriot Tedy Bruschi chimed in and laughed off Samuel’s comments as “absolutely ridiculous.”

An argument could be had regarding the person most responsible for the success the Patriots had for nearly two decades with the greatest quarterback and greatest coach of all time paired together in the same place.

But it’s obvious neither man would have had the same level of success without the other. It was the perfect storm that should be celebrated as a whole and not attacked separately.
