Foye Oluokun is the Jaguars’ nominee for the NFL’s annual sportsmanship award.

Jacksonville Jaguars linebacker and defensive team captain Foye Oluokun is nominated for the 2023 Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award, the NFL announced Wednesday.

“He plays the game right,” Jaguars coach Doug Pederson said of Oluokun on Wednesday. “He comes into work every day, puts in the time. A great leader on and off the field. He plays hard. Like I said, he just plays it the right way.

“He never misses a day. You can count on him. He’s accountable and he’s very deserving of this honor.”

Oluokun, 28, was signed by the Jaguars last offseason after he played his first four NFL seasons with the Atlanta Falcons. In his first season with Jacksonville, he led the NFL in tackles. So far this year, Oluokun has 107 tackles, 2.5 sacks, an interception, a forced fumble, and three fumble recoveries.

All 32 teams elect a nominee for the award, which was first created in 2014. No Jaguars player has won before, although the team’s former defensive lineman Calais Campbell won the honor last season while with the Baltimore Ravens.

The winner will be determined by a vote of current NFL players, who are not allowed to vote for their teammate. The award will be announced at the NFL Honors show before Super Bowl LVIII.

Ravens DL Calais Campbell wins 2022 Art Rooney Sportsmanship award

Ravens defensive lineman Calais Campbell won the 2022 Art Rooney Sportsmanship award

The Baltimore Ravens enter their 2023 offseason with plenty of questions that need to be answered. The most pressing storylines include who will be the team’s next offensive coordinator and the future of quarterback Lamar Jackson, but there are others that will also garner attention.

A few days before Super Bowl LVII between the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs, it was announced that Baltimore Ravens defensive lineman Calais Campbell has won the 2022 Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award.  The award goes to the player that shows sportsmanship on the field.

Campbell was contemplating retiring prior to the 2022 season, but decided to return in hopes of winning the Super Bowl with the Ravens. Campbell is an extremely friendly person both on and off of the field, with a radiant personality and incredible leadership skills.

The veteran is the first Ravens player to win this award, but hopefully won’t be the last. His NFL future is uncertain at the moment, but if he ends up retiring he might find himself in the Hall Of Fame one day.

Jerry Hughes named as finalist for Art Rooney Sportsmanship award

Hughes is one of eight players in the running to win the Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award

After news broke that linebacker Christian Kirksey would be the Houston Texans’ nominee for the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award, it was announced on Thursday that another member of the team would be in contention for the prestigious Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award as well.

Defensive lineman Jerry Hughes is reported to be a finalist for the Rooney Award, on a list of candidates that includes some of the most recognized players in the league. Four players from each conference were designated as finalists, and Hughes’ inclusion on the list is certainly good news for the Texans as their failed 2022 campaign draws to a close.

Hughes is in his first year playing for Houston and has emerged as a key leader on the Texans’ defense, which has taken a step forward over the past several weeks. He was a major contributor in their devastating loss to the Cleveland Browns on Sunday in a bizarre game where the defense did not allow a touchdown, but the Texans were outscored 27-14 en route to their 10th loss of the season.

Though so much has gone wrong for the team in 2022, Hughes’ inclusion as a finalist for one of the NFL’s most coveted awards is certainly a good sign for the team’s future moving forward. As they look to rebuild for the 2023 season, the Texans will turn to Hughes to be a rock for their defense through the adversity that is sure to be part of the process and should see good results from his efforts as one of Houston’s most impactful leaders.

For now, the Hughes and the defense will head into their Week 14 matchup against the Dallas Cowboys with a head of steam after the veteran lineman and linebackers were recognized for their unique talents both on and off the field.

Texans DE Jerry Hughes named 2022 Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award finalist

Houston Texans defensive end Jerry Hughes has been named a finalist for the 2022 Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award.

The award is presented annually to the player who, “demonstrates the qualities of on-field sportsmanship, including fair play, respect for the game and opponents, and integrity in competition,” according to a release from the Texans.

Coach Lovie Smith remarked on Hughes’ leadership in the fact the Sugar Land, Texas, native was able to secure a captaincy in his first season with the Texans.

“It says a lot when you’re Jerry Hughes, and you will be one of the defensive captains when you’ve only been in the building less than a year, to have that kind of impact on your teammates,” said Smith. “Jerry’s a veteran rusher and a veteran player that’s done it the right way all his career.”

The 13-year veteran has 8.0 sacks, which are tied for the 11th-most in the league and third-most Hughes has tallied through the first 13 weeks of a season. Hughes also has the second-most multi-sack games in the league this year with three.

“There’s nothing that he does that surprises me,” defensive line coach Jacques Cesaire said. “It’s the consistency. He’s the same person all the time. I always say to people, how you do one thing is how you do everything. That’s how he is.”

The Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award was created in 2014 in honor of the late founding owner of the Pittsburgh Steelers and Pro Football Hall of Famer Art Rooney Sr.

The award winner is determined by a vote of current players. From the eight finalists, each team’s players submit a consensus vote of their choice for the winner. Just like with Pro Bowl voting, a team cannot vote for its own player.

The other finalists are Baltimore Ravens DT Calais Campbell, Cleveland Browns RB Nick Chubb, Las Vegas Raiders DE Maxx Crosby, Minnesota Vikings RB Dalvin Cook, Tampa Bay Buccaneers LB Lavonte David, Green Bay Packers RB Aaron Jones, and San Francisco 49ers FB Kyle Juszczyk.
