ESPN’s Around the Horn is reportedly coming to an end next summer

It’s time to say goodbye to ESPN’s Around the Horn.

Afternoons on ESPN are reportedly going to look a lot different starting next summer.

New York Post‘s Ryan Glasspiegel reported on Wednesday that ESPN’s Around the Horn will come to an end in the summer of 2025 after a 23-year run.

The Tony Reali-hosted sports panel game show brought sportswriters like Woody Paige, J.A. Adande and Bill Plaschke to national prominence, among many, many others.

Fans of the show will most certainly deduct many points for ESPN making an unpopular decision like this, although the program will at least get a farewell run through the middle of next year.

We sure hope ESPN finds a new place for Reali with the network. He’s one of the best and brightest personalities on the network, and we don’t want him to leave the network on weekdays even if the show is coming to an end.

ESPN’s analyst has Notre Dame as the biggest winner of Week 1

Can you make a case for a bigger winner?

The consensus for Notre Dame after the first week of the season couldn’t be clearer: This team is good. A road game against Texas A&M that previous Irish teams would have lost became the 2024 Irish’s first victory. It’s resulted in more than moving up to fifth in the latest AP poll and making College Football Playoff projections.

During Tuesday’s broadcast of ESPN’s “Around the Horn”, the panel was asked which team emerged as the biggest winner of Week 1. While every panelist had a different answer, Courtney Cronin went with the Irish. She explained it the following way:

“Going down to College Station in the heat as underdogs despite being ranked higher than Texas A&M in front of a hundred thousand people and pulling out that win in Week 1? This was supposed to be the hard one for a team that doesn’t play in a conference. We’re talking about the playoff, what Notre Dame needs to do to get there. They answered the toughest test from the first game of the season.

I know if you like offense, this might have been a little bit of a snooze fest early on, but to watch how that offensive line that had six starts combined going into this season, didn’t give up a sack, protected [autotag]Riley Leonard[/autotag] all night, that go-ahead touchdown in the fourth quarter leaving nothing in doubt.

And let it be clear: They have a great front seven. It’s that secondary of Notre Dame that is one of the best, if not the best in the country, and they proved that.”

The vibe surrounding the Irish couldn’t be more positive right now. A win like we saw against the Aggies will do that.

Around the Horn’s ‘final word’ critical of new Bills stadium budget

Around the Horn’s ‘final word’ critical of new #Bills stadium budget:

For those who know the program, they’ll know the sequence.

But for context, ESPN’s longtime afternoon show “Around the Horn” awards points to sports writers and analysts in a game format.

In the end, the winner gets the “final word.”

In an episode this week, writer Justin Tinsley took home the victory and then put his crosshairs on the Buffalo Bills’ new stadium. Specifically, he’s not a fan of the funding situation.

In it, around $850 million of the $1.4B construction costs will be covered by taxpayers. He thinks that’s too much and explained why.

Tony Reali hosted a social-distanced version of ‘Around The Horn’ after Tom Brady news

Well done.

The coronavirus pandemic has forced the sports world to essentially close down as leagues look to limit large gatherings that could spread the virus. It has also had a significant impact on ESPN’s programming.

It was announced on Monday that ESPN’s Around The Horn would be off the air this week, which was an appropriate decision given the move from newsrooms to work remotely.

But there are times when a pandemic can’t even stop the competitive sports banter. This was one of those times.

After Tom Brady announced Tuesday morning that he would not be re-signing with the New England Patriots, Tony Reali got a panel together of Mina Kimes, Sarah Spain and Jackie MacMullan to discuss the huge NFL news … via a video chat from their homes. It was called “Around The Home.”

Such a good idea. Again, social distancing shouldn’t stop us from discussing sports. There are responsible ways to make it happen, and Reali pulled it off perfectly here.

While this segment wasn’t going to air on ESPN, it made for a great Twitter video.

Let’s keep “Around The Home” going as NFL free agency continues.
