Arnold Allen issues statement on UFC on ESPN 44 loss to Max Holloway: ‘Just wasn’t good enough’

Arnold Allen offered no excuses in the aftermath of his first octagon loss at UFC on ESPN 44.

[autotag]Arnold Allen[/autotag] offered no excuses in the aftermath of his first octagon loss at UFC on ESPN 44.

Allen (19-2 MMA, 10-1 UFC) saw his remarkable winning streak to begin his UFC tenure halted on Saturday when he dropped a unanimous decision to former featherweight champ Max Holloway (24-7 MMA, 20-7 UFC) at T-Mobile Center in Kansas City, Mo.

The Brit had his moments over the course of the five-round contest, but ultimately he didn’t have quite enough to get the upper hand on Holloway and is now sent back to the drawing board.

He’ll return back with a positive mindset, however, as Allen’s first social media statement showed tremendous maturity (via Instagram):

An honour to share the cage with a legend in @blessedmma I just wasnt good enough tonight

Thanks for the support ❤️

Although Allen, 29, has not yet gone into the finer details of what went wrong on fight night, UFC president Dana White had no problem offering some criticism toward Allen’s corner, whom he believed let him down as the rounds wore on and the fight slipped away.

Dana White believes Arnold Allen’s corner let him down at UFC on ESPN 44: ‘A lot of mistakes made’

UFC boss Dana White believes Arnold Allen had a better chance to beat Max Holloway if his corner conveyed “a sense of urgency earlier.”

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Everyone knows these famous words: It’s not how you start, it’s how you finish. But for [autotag]Arnold Allen[/autotag] at UFC on ESPN 44, how he finished wasn’t good enough to get the win.

That was something UFC president [autotag]Dana White[/autotag] emphasized as he assessed Allen’s performance in a unanimous decision loss to former featherweight champion Max Holloway in Saturday night’s main event at T-Mobile Center.

“I think that Allen looked incredible,” White told reporters, including MMA Junkie, during the UFC on ESPN 44 post-event news conference. “I mean, if you think about it, it’s his first big night ever in a main event, whole crowd’s against him, and he came on too late. If he had fought the way he fought in the fifth round from the third round on, he would’ve had a better chance to win the fight.”

Although it was relatively competitive, Holloway (24-7 MMA, 20-7 UFC) had a distinct edge (19-2 MMA, 10-1 UFC) in the way he dictated the pace for most of the fight, which was reflected in the judges’ scores through four rounds as only one gave Round 2 to Allen. It wasn’t until the fifth round that Allen, at the urgency of his corner, hit another gear with his striking attack, and all three judges rewarded him with a 10-9 score.

By that time, it was too little too late as Holloway won the fight 49-46 twice and 48-47. White seemed to place blame on Allen’s corner for not lighting a fire under their fighter sooner.

“I’m not a corner man or a coach, but yeah, I think there should’ve been a sense of urgency earlier,” White said. “But I’m not a corner man. …

“It’s a lot of pressure for a guy (in his first UFC main event). I thought he handled it well. He’s obviously talented enough. He went five rounds with Max Holloway, one of the best ever. I just think he poured it on a little too late. But I’m not his corner man.”

[lawrence-auto-related count=3 category=420030788]

For Allen, it’s back to the proverbial drawing board. Having his 12-fight winning streak snapped and losing for the first time in the UFC puts a damper on the 29-year-old Brit’s title aspirations.

White still feels good about his direction, but he might’ve felt better about it had his corner coached him up better during the fight.

“I don’t care about the guys who necessarily get out there and talk or do anything else. In this business, it’s all about how you fight. Are you good enough?” White said. “Let me tell you about how hard it is to break in the top five, especially in that weight class. And he has, and he’s a talented guy. I think that there were a lot of mistakes made tonight in the corner.

“Obviously he’s got that experience under his belt now. They’ve got to go back and figure out what went wrong, what was broken, and fix it. He’s a talented kid.”

Max Holloway ‘would love to fight’ Korean Zombie next: ‘I’m kind of tripping on how we didn’t fight yet’

Max Holloway is down to fight Korean Zombie next.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – [autotag]Max Holloway[/autotag] has his eyes on the belt, but also on a specific name in the featherweight division.

That name is fellow veteran Chang Sung Jung. “The Korean Zombie” is one of the very few names at the top of the weight class that Holloway (24-7 MMA, 20-7 UFC) has yet to fight.

Now fresh off a unanimous decision win over [autotag]Arnold Allen[/autotag] in the main event of Saturday’s UFC on ESPN 44, Holloway believes that’s a fight that could make sense for him next.

“Korean Zombie, that’s the only guy of my time, with the older guys, that I didn’t get to fight,” Holloway told reporters at the UFC on ESPN 44 post-fight press conference. “I would love that fight. There’s a fight in my agents’ country, Australia. Australia is supposed to be happening sometime, we don’t know when, and if Korean Zombie wants it he can get it. I would love to fight him. That’s one of the guys I grew up watching.

“I’m kind of tripping on how we didn’t fight yet. How did we not fight? If that’s one of the guys, that’s one of the guys. I would love to share the octagon with him. He’s one of the OGs that I didn’t get to fight, and we came up in the same era, and we didn’t fight each other.”

[lawrence-related id=2634133]

Holloway’s win over Allen (19-2 MMA, 10-1 UFC) was the first fight since losing a third time to champion Alexander Volkanovski back in July 2022.

Holloway still has aspirations of winning back the UFC featherweight title. And despite being 0-3 against the champion, Holloway is not stressing about his road back to the title and won’t wish Volkanovski a loss in his upcoming title unification bout against Yair Rodriguez at UFC 290 on July 8.

“We’ll see what happens,” Holloway said. “Let the best man win. I get to be a fan in that fight in July, and we’ll see what happens. Never say never. We’ll be alright.”

UFC on ESPN 44 results: Max Holloway wins unanimous decision to give Arnold Allen first UFC loss

Max Holloway’s championship experience shined in a five-round battle against Arnold Allen in the main event of UFC on ESPN 44.

Former UFC featherweight champ [autotag]Max Holloway[/autotag] proved he’s still a level above every other contender in the division.

In the main event of UFC on ESPN 44, Holloway (24-7 MMA, 20-7 UFC) turned in another skillful performance against Arnold Allen. The event took place Saturday at T-Mobile Center in Kansas City, Mo. and aired on ESPN.

Allen (19-2 MMA, 10-1 UFC) proved to be a tough out, but when the time expired after five rounds, Holloway was declared the winner by unanimous decision with scores of 49-46, 49-46 and 48-47.

Allen looked to start the action with a series of leg kicks as Holloway measured from the outside. One of the kicks went south, pausing the action momentarily. When the fight resumed, Holloway fired off a few fast punching combinations as the crowd chanted his name.

A big left hand from Allen cracked, but Holloway didn’t seem bothered as kept his same demeanor. A few more heated exchanges followed, but Holloway appeared more comfortable as he circled and picked his shots well.

[lawrence-related id=2634823]

The left hand was the tool of choice early in the second round for Allen, who came out aggressive and landed the punch to punctuate a few hard combinations. Holloway responded well in the second half of the round, but Allen set the tone for the frame with his power in the opening exchanges.

Staying light on his feet while circling remained a key strategy for Holloway in the third. Holloway added in more kicks to his offense, especially a few flush to the body, while switching stances repeatedly to keep Allen guessing.

In the fourth, Holloway’s experience in championship fights began to shine. While Allen’s offense slowed initially in the frame, Holloway took advantage with crisp combinations and clean counters. However, Allen did find a home for a few big strikes in the later moments of the round.

Allen’s corner told him he needed to go for a finish, and he came out hunting for it aggressively. After landing a few nice shots, Holloway reset and got back to controlling the pace of the action. Allen initiated a clinch momentarily, but opted to go back to the striking game, and landed more nice punches and a head kick. After a clinch stalled the action, the fighters separated and emptied the tank. Holloway clipped and dropped Allen right before the horn, but the judges would have their say.

All three cageside judges agreed the former champ did enough to earn the victory on the scorecards. With the result, Holloway returns to the win column after his title challenge loss to Alexander Volkanovski at UFC 276.

Holloway also set a unique milestone during the fight, as he became the first fighter in UFC history to land over 3,000 significant strikes, according to a stat shown during the broadcast.

Allen walks away with the first loss of his UFC career. He entered on the heels of back-to-back stoppages of Dan Hooker and Calvin Kattar, but had his momentum halted by one of the best in the division’s history.

UFC on ESPN 44: Holloway vs. Allen picks and predictions

Records: Holloway (23-7-0) | Allen (19-1-0)

Fight result (2-way line or moneyline)

Holloway (-185) is just a little too expensive for a standalone wager, although he isn’t a terrible play as part of a multi-fighter parlay.

Holloway has gone the distance in 7 straight fights, and he’ll tap into his experience to hang a loss on Allen, so ROUND AND METHOD OF VICTORY: HOLLOWAY BY DECISION/TECHNICAL DECISION (+150) is a much better value for a chance to multiply your initial wager by 1 1/2 times.

Over/Under (O/U)

If you don’t want to declare a winner, then WILL THE FIGHT GO THE DISTANCE? YES (-135) isn’t priced out of line. Allen has gone the distance in 4 of his past 6 fights, while Holloway has needed the help of the judges to determine a winner in 7 in a row.

If you’d like a little wiggle room, betting OVER 4.5 ROUNDS (-115) is also a recommended play.

Also on the main card, [autotag]Dustin Jacoby[/autotag] (18-6-1 MMA, 6-3-1 UFC) fights [autotag]Azamat Murzakanov[/autotag] (12-0 MMA, 2-0 UFC) at light heavyweight, and even though he’s a -165 favorite, it’s Murzakanov who has a near-shutout in the picks as an underdog at 10-1.

Another fight at 205 pounds sees [autotag]Tanner Boser[/autotag] (20-9-1 MMA, 4-4 UFC) take on [autotag]Ion Cutelaba[/autotag] (16-9-1 MMA, 5-8-1 UFC). Cutelaba is a slight favorite at -135, but Boser has a big 9-2 picks lead.

[autotag]Chris Gutierrez[/autotag] (19-3-2 MMA, 7-1-1 UFC) is more than a 2-1 favorite against [autotag]Pedro Munhoz[/autotag] (19-7 MMA, 9-7 UFC) in their bantamweight bout, and he’s our lone unanimous pick from our staff members at 11-0.

And to open the main card, [autotag]Rafa Garcia[/autotag] (15-3 MMA, 3-3 UFC) takes on longtime lightweight and UFC Hall of Famer [autotag]Clay Guida[/autotag] (38-22 MMA, 18-16 UFC). Garcia is the biggest favorite on the entire card at -275, but the picks didn’t play out that way. Underdog Guida has a 7-4 lead from our pickers.
