Injury Report: Pair of LSU starters out for Army game in Week 8

Emery Jones and Mekhi Wingo are officially out for Saturday’s game against Army.

LSU is getting a much-needed break from SEC play this weekend as it hosts Army in Baton Rouge in Week 8.

The Tigers are a bit banged up, and they’ll have what should be a tuneup game and then the bye to get healthy. Still, they’ll be down some key players this weekend.

On Thursday’s injury report, coach [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] confirmed that both starting defensive tackle [autotag]Mekhi Wingo[/autotag] and starting right tackle [autotag]Emery Jones[/autotag] will be out this weekend. LSU will, however, get rotational receiver [autotag]Chris Hilton Jr.[/autotag] back after he missed a few games with a high ankle sprain.

Without Jones, [autotag]Lance Heard[/autotag] will make his first start at right tackle after putting in some good reps last week in Jones’ absence. Without Wingo, [autotag]Jordan Jefferson[/autotag] will likely play an even bigger role in the interior.

LSU plays host to Army on Saturday night at 6:30 p.m. CT in a game that will be televised on the SEC Network.

LSU Wire Roundtable: Staff predictions for Tigers’ Week 8 contest vs. Army

Here’s how our staff at LSU Wire sees this weekend’s contest against Army playing out.

After playing five SEC games in a row, LSU has a bit of an unconventional matchup in Week 8.

The Tigers will be hosting a service academy in Army, which will mark just the second time LSU has faced a service academy after the two teams squared off in 1931, a game the Black Knights won 20-0.

College football has changed quite a bit since the interwar period, and LSU enters this game as a heavy favorite. Following this matchup, it’s a bye and then a road contest against Alabama that could decide the SEC West.

The Tigers can’t get ahead of themselves, however. Here’s how our staff at LSU Wire sees this weekend’s contest against Army playing out.

LSU-Army betting odds holding steady on Friday per BetMGM

The Tigers remain a 32.5-point favorite in Week 8 as of Friday afternoon.

The LSU Tigers enter Week 8 with what looks like a potential tune-up on the horizon against Army.

The Black Knights will present a stylistic challenge for the Tigers, but they enter this game at just 2-4 having lost three in a row. With that in mind, they opened the week as a 30.5-point underdog, and that spread increased by two points during the week, per BetMGM.

That line is holding steady on Friday at 32.5, as is the over/under at 59.5. There is currently no money line available on this game.

Five things to know about Army matchup in Week 8

Here are five things to know about Army before the Black Knights head to Baton Rouge.

LSU and Army will meet for the second time in the history of their respective programs on Saturday night.

The first meeting came all the way back in 1931. College football looked a lot different back then and Army won the game 20-0. Now almost 100 years later, the two meet again.

LSU is a heavy favorite and looking to extend its win streak to three as it heads into the bye week before the game with Alabama.

The Tigers will likely be without key players up front as [autotag]Emery Jones[/autotag] and [autotag]Mekhi Wingo[/autotag] get healthy. Meanwhile, [autotag]Jayden Daniels[/autotag] and the passing attack will look to stay hot.

Here are five things you should know about Army prior to the game on Saturday night.

Brian Kelly says LSU isn’t looking past Army matchup in Week 8

The Tigers can’t afford to sleepwalk against a well-coached Army team on Saturday, Brian Kelly said.

The Tigers have a much-needed break from SEC play this week as they play host to Army ahead of a bye.

With a two-week sabbatical from conference contests, it would be easy for LSU to start looking ahead to a Week 10 game against Alabama that could once again decide the SEC West. But with a tough matchup against a service academy in Army that is stylistically a bit difficult to prepare for, coach [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] said his team is not looking past its opponent.

“It’ll be important for our guys to think about what’s important right now,” Kelly said, per On3. “The bye week’s not important right now. We don’t go to the bye week this week. This week, we need to focus on our development and we need to focus on our process and we need to focus on Army. If we focus on anything else, we’ll get beat. This football team is not a team that can play with the dimmer. We’re either on or off. We need to be on. If we’re locked in and doing our thing the right way, we’re going to have a good Saturday. If we’re not, we’re gonna struggle. We’ll talk about that today when we meet. We’ve got to be locked in on our process and how we prepare this week against a really tough opponent.”

LSU seems to be approaching this game as it would an SEC opponent, which is made easier by the fact that there’s a week break between this matchup and the one in Tuscaloosa.

The Tigers will look to move to 6-2 on the season against the Black Knights on Saturday.

LOOK: LSU reveals camo end zone paint for game against Army on Saturday

LSU has painted the end zones at Tiger Stadium in a camouflage pattern in honor of Army.

LSU has a unique non-conference game coming up on Saturday as it will host a service academy.

The Army Black Knights are coming to town, and at his Monday press conference, coach [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] said the team had some appropriate festivities planned for the game.

One of them was revealed on Wednesday as LSU has painted the end zones in a camouflage pattern in honor of Army. This will be just the second time the Tigers have faced a service academy in program history and the first in 92 years as the Tigers and Black Knights faced in 1931, a game Army won 20-0.

Winners of their last two, the Tigers will look to keep things rolling against Army on Saturday before the bye in Week 9 and a potentially decisive SEC West matchup against Alabama to start November.

Over/under increases again for LSU-Army on Wednesday, no change in spread

The lines remain largely unchanged on Wednesday, per BetMGM.

LSU has a two-week break from SEC play coming up with a matchup against Army this weekend before the bye.

The Tigers entered the week as 30.5-point favorites over the Black Knights, who come into this one at 2-4 on the season. That hasn’t changed throughout the week, and as of Wednesday afternoon, LSU is still a 30.5-point favorite.

The only change in this update is that the over/under has increased once again to 58 points. There is currently no money line on this matchup.

How LSU’s next opponent fared in Week 7

LSU will face Army in Week 8, which suffered its third-straight loss on Saturday.

LSU’s getting a break from conference play next week with Army coming to town in Week 8.

An SEC school facing a service academy is a rare occurrence, especially in the modern era of the sport.

Army’s in the middle of a rough stretch and dropped its third straight game on Saturday. The Black Knights were shut out 19-0 at the hands of Troy. Army fell to 2-4 on the year.

When Army comes to Baton Rouge, it’ll mark its second trip to Louisiana this year. It opened the year with a loss at Louisiana-Monroe.

The betting line is yet to be posted as of Saturday night, but LSU’s sure to be a heavy favorite. Army’s unique offense poses its own challenges, but [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] is no stranger to service academies after facing Navy several times while at Notre Dame.

Army’s struggling offense will give the LSU defense another week to find its footing after a solid performance against Auburn.

Game time, TV info announced for LSU’s Week 8 home game vs. Army

It will be another night game in Death Valley as LSU welcomes Army to town in Week 8.

After facing Auburn on Saturday night in Baton Rouge, LSU’s barrage of SEC opponents will take a one-week respite.

The Tigers face their penultimate non-conference opponent in Week 8 as they host a service academy in Army. As announced on Monday, that will also be a night game in Death Valley that begins at 6:30 p.m. CT.

The game will be televised on the SEC Network.

Army is a team under transition as coach Jeff Monken has moved away from the traditional triple option to utilize a more shotgun-based and passing-oriented attack. He’ll now test his new-look offense against an SEC defense.

The Tigers sit at 4-2 on the season after a win over Missouri last weekend, and they’ll look to make it two straight when they return home to face their fourth SEC West opponent in Auburn.

Oklahoma Baseball lands in Charlottesville Regional, face ECU Friday

Oklahoma baseball makes it back to the NCAA Tournament as they sneak in as an at-large team and will take on the ECU Pirates.

The wait is over. The Oklahoma Sooners baseball team has found its way back into the NCAA Tournament. The journey was never easy and was full of ups and downs, but the Sooners earned an at-large bid after selections were announced on the official selection show Monday. Oklahoma received the next to last at-large bid per the show’s hosts.

Oklahoma (31-26) will play in the Charlottesville regional with the University of Virginia (45-12) as hosts. Their first opponent will be the ECU Pirates (45-17) out of the American Athletic Conference. The Pirates won the regular season crown but fell short in the conference tournament as the Tulane Green Wave, who finished second to last in the conference, pulled off an incredible run to win the tournament title. ECU’s failure in the tournament effectively pushed ECU out of potentially hosting a regional.

Oklahoma’s inclusion into the field was in real doubt as of Friday night. The Sooners were at No. 40 in the NCAA’s RPI after bowing out of the Big 12 tourney.

With no overly impressive resume, Oklahoma needed serious help. They were only 11-13 in conference play and made no run in the conference tournament. One positive Oklahoma had going forward, which undoubtedly played a large role in its selection, was their strength of schedule.

While Oklahoma struggled, they also played a grinding schedule that battle-tested them. For a team that lost a significant number of key players from the 2022 run, earning a postseason berth should be commended.

It remains to be seen if they can replicate the magic of getting all the way to the championship series like they did last year, but getting in is the first step.

The fourth and final team in the region is Army West Point (38-16). If the Sooners make it out of the regional, they would take on the winner of the Conway regional hosted by Coastal Carolina, which features Duke, UNC Wilmington, and Rider.
