Arkansas eliminates Santa Clara, will play TCU in championship Monday

Dynamite pitching lifted Arkansas past the Broncos in the Fayetteville Regional.

Sunday started badly for the Arkansas baseball team. Monday is another day.

The Razorbacks fought off elimination in the Fayetteville Regional on Sunday night to advance to the championship Monday against TCU. Arkansas beat Santa Clara, the team it beat in the regional opener, 6-4, to make it happen just hours after TCU sent the Diamond Hogs to the loser’s bracket.

Santa Clara brought the tying run to the plate with one out in the ninth when Thomas Ferraggiaro hit a looping RBI single to center to pull the Broncos within two. Hunter Hollan replaced Will McEntire after the hit and the left-hander induced a double-play to end the game.

Brady Tygart was the biggest reason why the Hogs hung tough. The team’s top healthy pro prospect, Tygart gave up just three hits and two earned runs while striking out six in his 5 2/3 innings. He was one strike away from six innings of two-hit ball with a shutout before Eamonn Lance hit a two-run double to trim Arkansas’ lead at the time to two runs. Santa Clara made it just a one-run Hogs lead on the next at-bat as a throwing error to the dugout allowed Lance to score.

Kendall Diggs hit a two-run home run, though, in the eighth to boost it back to a three-run game to set up the final nail-biting.

Arkansas and TCU will play for the third time this season – and second in the regional – Monday afternoon. If the Horned Frogs win, they will advance to play Indiana State in the Terre Haute Super Regional. If Arkansas wins, the teams will play again later Monday night.

Arkansas baseball vs. Santa Clara: How to watch, listen

Arkansas is facing elimination against the Broncos on Sunday night.

Arkansas has one loss left in the Fayetteville Regional. If it happens Sunday night against Santa Clara, the Razorbacks are out of the NCAA Tournament.

First pitch from Baum-Walker Stadium is scheduled for 8 p.m.

Arkansas is in that position because TCU, the two-seed in the regional, blasted the Diamond Hogs, 20-5, earlier Sunday. Tre Richardson hit three home runs, including two grand slams to lift the Horned Frogs.

The Razorbacks beat Santa Clara on Friday to send the Broncos to the loser’s bracket. Santa Clara then beat Arizona on Saturday to stay alive and set up Sunday night’s game. The winner will get TCU on Monday.

The Horned Frogs need just one more win to advance out of the regional.

Beyond the Box Score: Arkansas’ timely hits and scattered staff lift Diamond Hogs

The phrase ‘clutch’ gets thrown around a lot. It was applicable Friday for Arkansas.

Great is overrated. Good is usually good enough.

That was the case for Arkansas baseball on Friday as the Razorbacks knocked off Santa Clara in the opening game of the Fayetteville Regional, 13-6. The top-seeded Diamond Hogs stayed on the winner’s side of the four-team bracket and will play either Texas Christian or Arizona on Saturday.

But things weren’t easy against the fourth-seeded Broncos. Santa Clara outhit Arkansas 13 to 10 and even had more extra-base knocks. The difference was when those hits came.

Well, that and Santa Clara’s separate issues on the mound.

Let’s take a quick look at the details that allowed the host team to open the NCAA Tournament with a win.

Big innings lift Arkansas past Santa Clara in first game of Fayetteville Regional

Santa Clara’s bats were good, but the Razorbacks took big advantage of Broncos pitching.

Santa Clara proved itself a legitimate four-seed in the Fayetteville Regional on Friday. Arkansas proved itself a national power.

The Razorbacks, the No. 3-seed in the NCAA Tournament and tops in their own hosted regional, topped Broncos in the weekend’s opener, 13-6. It wasn’t quite that easy, though.

Santa Clara outhit Arkansas, 13 to 10, but the Diamond Hogs coaxed 10 walks and were hit by pitches three times en route two different five-run innings and a three-run frame in the seventh.

It was the five runs in the fourth that put the Razorbacks ahead for good. They entered the inning trailing 2-0 after the Broncos scored two off starter Hunter Hollan in the first. Parker Rowland had an RBI single and John Bolton followed with a sacrifice fly to tie things. Kendall Diggs then hit a rare three-run single to cap things.

Tavian Josenberger hit a two-run homer in the sixth and Arkansas scored on three bases-loaded walks later in the frame to drop another five runs.

Will McEntire kept Santa Clara at bay enough in the middle innings to pick up the win. He pitched five innings of relief after Hollan made it through just 2 1/3.

Caleb Cali tacked on a three-run home run in the seventh to provide Arkansas all the runs it would need.

The Diamond Hogs will play either No. 2 Texas Christian or No. 3 Arizona in the winner’s bracket on Saturday. The loser of that game gets Santa Clara in an elimination game.

Arkansas vs. Santa Clara: How to watch Fayetteville regional opener

Arkansas begins its postseason run In Fayetteville against Santa Clara.

It’s finally time for the Hogs to return to the diamond and begin their quest to the College World Series.

Arkansas will host three schools, Santa Clara, Arizona, and TCU. As the region’s top seed, they will take on the West Coast Conference Champions, Santa Clara Broncos first on Friday.

Our editor, E. Wayne, put together everything you need to know about Santa Clara, which is currently on an eight-game winning streak.

Santa Clara is making its first NCAA Tournament appearance since 1997, and Arkansas has a perfect 1-0 record against them. The two teams faced off in 1995 in San Jose, California, with the Razorbacks securing a dominant 10-3 victory over the Broncos.

This year, Baum-Walker Stadium has been a winning venue for Arkansas, with a 30-4 record and 19-3 against teams in the NCAA tournament. They will tie the school record for most home wins in a single season with just four more victories.

Van Horn tabs Hunter Hollan to start opener against Santa Clara

Hunter Hollan has pitched in two World Series before. Junior-college World Series, but enough where Dave Van Horn trusts his lefty.

Hunter Hollan has never pitched in the NCAA Tournament before. Well, he will not have until Friday afternoon.

The NJCAA Tournament, though? Yep. Plenty.

The Arkansas left-hander, in his first season with the Razorbacks after arriving in the offseason from junior-college, will get the ball to start the Diamond Hogs’ stint in the Fayetteville Regional against Santa Clara. Arkansas, the top seed, will play No. 4 Santa Clara at 2 p.m.

Hollan has been a staple in the Razorbacks’ rotation since his arrival. No on the roster has started more than his 14 games this year. All year long, he was Arkansas’ second-best among starters, only bested by All-SECer Hagen Smith.

But pitching with a national title in sight isn’t new to Hollan. He struck out 10 batters in five innings last year for San Jacinto College in the Junior College World Series and he pitched in two games in the Series the season before, as a freshman.

Results in recent weeks have been mixed. Hollan was good against LSU last time out in the SEC Tournament, giving up just two runs in 5 1/3 innings out of the bullpen. In the finale regular-season series against Vanderbilt, though, he lasted just 2 2/3 innings, allowing four runs on eight hits.

But it’s the weekend before that showed what Hollan can do when on his game. Against South Carolina, he pitched a complete game five-hitter while giving up just a run and striking out 10.

In his three games against non-SEC opponents – Eastern Illinois, Wright State and Louisana Tech – Hollan pitched 16 2/3 innings, allowing 13 hits, four earned run and he struck out 16.

A win against the Broncos on Friday would set up an Arkansas game against either No. 2 Texas Christian or No. 3 Arizona. A loss would pit the Hogs against that game’s loser.

Everything to know about Arkansas’ first-round opponent Santa Clara

Like many schools in the WCC, Santa Clara is a religious school. And like many, Arkansas isn’t terribly familiar with them.

Trivia time.

Question No. 1: Is Santa Clara, California in northern or southern California?

Question No. 2: Who is the former NBA MVP who played basketball there?

Question No. 3: What are the school colors of SCU?

If you have one of those questions correct, congratulations, you’re an NBA fan (and probably older than 40). If you answered correctly on two, you’re a sports fan with a good memory. All three? Impressive.

Santa Clara and Arkansas have met exactly once on the baseball diamond. That was back in 1995 and resulted in a 10-3 Arkansas win in San Jose, which, for the record is the nearest huge city with which most Arkansans are familiar. But Friday’s first-round game of the Fayetteville Regional will be just a touch more important than that previous encounter.

Not only are the Broncos not terribly familiar with the Razorbacks, they’re not familiar with the stage. The NCAA Tournament appearence is the first for Santa Clara in generations as their conference, the West Coast Conference, had long been dominated by a rotation of three other teams.

But with coach Rusty Filter’s experience at some of the top, major-conference programs in the West, his bunch is ready to maximize its stay time.

Let’s take a look at more about the school and the program.

If Arkansas is able to win their regional this weekend, they would host the winner of the Terre Haute Regional (Indiana State, Iowa, North Carolina or Wright State) in a Super Regional at Baum-Walker Stadium.

Making the trek to Fayetteville this weekend will be the No. 2 seed TCU Horned Frogs, No. 3 seed Arizona Wildcats and No. 4 seed Santa Clara Broncos. Arkansas will play Santa Clara on Friday while TCU will play Arizona.
