Cardinals vs. Chargers ultimate Week 12 preview

The 5-5 Los Angeles Chargers will be taking on the 4-7 Arizona Cardinals at State Farm Stadium this Sunday.

Sitting at 4-7, there isn’t much hope for the Arizona Cardinals making the postseason. There are already rumors of Sean Payton eyeing the Cardinals’ potential job opening, which is telling about this season, given it’s only November.

They face the Los Angeles Chargers Sunday afternoon at State Farm Stadium.

The Chargers are 5-5 and find themselves in a must-win game of their own. There is still room for them to squeeze into the AFC wild card race with a win, especially considering their impressive performance against the Chiefs last week.

While not mathematically eliminated, the Cardinals would begin to trend that way with another loss on Sunday. Let’s dive into this one.

How have the Cardinals done against the Chargers before?

The Cardinals and Chargers don’t play very often, as their last three matchups date all the way back to 2010.

The Arizona Cardinals and Los Angeles Chargers don’t play very often, as they are in opposing conferences. The two will meet for the first time since 2018 this coming Sunday.

The Chargers will be looking to get back into the AFC wild card race, while the Cardinals are nearing the point where they are playing for pride. Many of the fans in Arizona are already speculating if a certain Super Bowl-winning coach will be coaching in the desert next season.

The Chargers lead the all-time series between these two teams 10-4. It’s an obviously small sample size given their lack of playing one another. The Chargers are 4-1 against the Cardinals in their past five meetings.

Let’s take a look at the last time these three teams played one another.

What’s new with the Chargers in 2022?

The Chargers and Cardinals will face off this Sunday in a matchup between two teams that have not quite lived up to expectations in 2022?

The Los Angeles Chargers and Arizona Cardinals will face off this Sunday on the heels of Arizona’s 38-10 loss to the San Francisco 49ers Monday night.

Sitting at 4-7, the season is basically all but lost for the Cardinals, but the Chargers (5-5) are still in the AFC wild card race. They won’t be winning the division in 2022, but can still make a run off an easy schedule and sneak into the playoffs.

In the offseason, the Chargers spent a ton of money and draft capital on bolstering their defense. Unfortunately for them, they have been almost as banged up as the Cardinals, with many of their key players missing Sunday’s game.

Los Angeles gave free agent cornerback J.C. Jackson a lucrative contract extension in the offseason and acquired perennial Pro-Bowl edge rusher Khalil Mack in a trade with the Bears.

Jackson will miss this game after suffering a season-ending knee injury, but Mack will be a full go and pose problems for a patchwork offensive line. It has been a struggle for Mack, however, as the rest of the Chargers offensive line is on injured reserve, including Joey Bosa.

The Chargers also locked up one of their own in Mike Williams, who has been in and out of the lineup with a couple injuries this season. His status for Sunday’s game is very much in question.

In the first round of the NFL Draft, the Chargers selected offensive guard Zion Johnson, a target that had been heavily linked to the Cardinals. They did not pick again until the third round, as their second-rounder was sent to the Bears in the Khalil Mack deal.

It was clearly an all-in approach by the Chargers while star quarterback Justin Herbert is on a rookie deal, but it unfortunately hasn’t worked out for them to this point.

Here’s a full breakdown of the Chargers offseason moves

Notable Offseason Additions:

  • CB J.C. Jackson
  • DL Sebastian Joseph-Day
  • DL Austin Johnson
  • LB Kyle Van Noy
  • TE Gerald Everett
  • CB Bryce Callahan

Notable Offseason Losses:

  • T Bryan Bulaga
  • CB Chris Harris
  • TE Jared Cook
  • DT Linval Joseph
  • LB Kyzir White

Studs and Duds in Cardinals’ 38-10 loss to 49ers

Take a look at the studs and duds from the Cardinals’ Week 11 loss to the San Francisco 49ers.

What an embarrassment.

The Arizona Cardinals were completely blown out by the San Francisco 49ers 38-10 on national television in Mexico City. It was a complete dismantling in the second half, as the first half was a respectable 17-10 score.

There were almost no bright spots for this team and there are major question marks moving forward for the organization. If they put up repeat performances for the remainder of the season, there will be wholesale changes up and down.

There were mostly duds in the game but we do have at least one bright spot.

How have the Cardinals done against the 49ers?

The Cardinals are 12-4 against the 49ers over the last eight years. They’ll need some of that success in Week 11.

The Arizona Cardinals and San Francisco 49ers will both travel to Mexico City in what is a pivotal matchup for the NFC West.

If the Cardinals can win, they’ll be a game back from .500 and have a much more realistic shot of making the postseason as a wild card team. If the 49ers win, they’ll tie the Seahawks in wins and get closer to first place.

The 49ers lead the all-time series 32-29, so the Cardinals will not be able to take the lead in this season even if they pull off another sweep.

Last season, the Cardinals swept the 49ers, a rival they’ve had a great deal of success against. The team is 12-4 in their last 16 games played, so the recent matchups have very much gone in favor of the Cardinals.

With that in mind, how have the Cardinals done against the 49ers in recent memory? Analyzing trends is always key when looking at an upcoming matchup.

What’s new with the 49ers in 2022?

Check out what has changed since the last time the Cardinals and 49ers squared off.

Despite entering Week 11, the Arizona Cardinals have yet to play the 49ers this season. They’ll do so twice between now and January, with Monday’s game being of the utmost importance to preserving their postseason hopes.

Since these two teams last met a year ago, the 9ers have gone through a few major changes. While they did everything they could to keep the same near-NFC Champion roster intact, they did make a few key additions.

First, the team made the biggest move of the NFL trade deadline by acquiring former Panthers running back Christian McCaffrey, who has been excellent for the team to this point.

The team turned to second-year quarterback Trey Lance to take over at quarterback this season, but a season-ending injury in Week 2 has the team once again turning to Jimmy Garoppolo, who has been efficient to this point.

In the offseason, the 49ers were subject of lots of noise surrounding All-Pro receiver Deebo Samuel, who apparently requested a trade from the team. Samuel and the Niner would end up reaching an agreement on a lucrative extension.

Outside of the in-season McCaffrey deal, their only major outside addition was former Chiefs cornerback Charvarius Ward, who has been very solid for the team.

They did lose a number of helpful veterans, those being center Alex Mack, guard Laken Tomlinson and defensive tackle D.J. Jones. The departures of Tomlinson and Jones were head-scratching as the team should have plenty of cap space moving forward with their heir apparent at quarterback on a cheap deal.

This year’s team is more or less the same as last year’s, but with an All-Pro running back in the mix. They’re a physical team that are going to demand an excellent performance from the Cardinals to beat.

49ers Key Offseason Additions:

  • CB Charvarius Ward
  • WR Ray-Ray McCloud
  • DE Drake Jackson
  • WR Danny Gray

49ers Key Offseason Losses:

  • C Alex Mack
  • OG Laken Tomlinson
  • RB Raheem Mostert
  • CB K’Waun Williams
  • OT Tom Compton
  • DT D.J. Jones

Studs and duds in Cardinals’ 27-17 win over Rams

Take a look at our studs and duds are from the Cardinals’ 27-17 win over the Rams.

Finally, our Arizona Cardinals secure a divisional win. In a game they absolutely had to have, the Cards beat up on their hated rival Rams 27-17, a game that felt over at halftime.

Defensive coordinator Vance Joseph continues to deliver despite being undermanned, as they were in this one. Both sides of the ball performed admirably without a number of key starters.

If there is hope to make noise the season, they must replicate this level of success against the 49ers next Monday night in Mexico. Until then, let’s take a look at the studs and duds from this one.
