The Mountaineers were involved in one of the crazier games you’re going to see. Appalachian State and visiting North Carolina went up and down the field in a wild App State 63-61 loss in which UNC outscored the host 40-22 in the 4th quarter. The Mountaineers had a chance to tie it late on a 2-point conversion, but just came up short.

The good news is that the Mountaineers ran for 288 yards while passing for 361 yards. The bad news is App State’s D allowed 215 yards on the ground with 352 yards through the air.

The Aggies defense was a little more effective last week, pitching a shutout in a 31-0 win over FCS Sam Houston State, one of the top programs at the subdivision level. A&M was good for 387 passing yards, and you can expect QB Haynes King and the Aggies to come out looking to strike early.

Money line

Texas A&M (-900) will cost 9 times your potential return, or $100 for every $11.11 won. There is just no value in making those kind of bets, especially over the long term.

AVOID.

Against the spread

TEXAS A&M -17.5 (-105) is a much better play laying the points. Sure, Appalachian State proved last week that it had a powerful offense, but that was also against a subpar North Carolina defense.

As mentioned, A&M pitched a shutout last week against a top-tier FCS team. The Mountaineers will be able to score here, but their defense proved they cannot stop anybody, either.

Look for A&M to amass plenty of points here and grab its first cover of the season after a near-miss last week.

Over/Under

OVER 53.5 (-112) appears to be a rather low number considering Appalachian State was involved in a game last week with 124 combined points. Obviously, that isn’t going to happen on a regular basis. However, A&M does have a balanced offense capable of exploiting App State’s weaknesses for plenty of big plays, especially in front of a raucous 12th man crowd.

Appalachian State won’t be nearly as effective on offense against Texas A&M, but the defense needs to show a vast improvement before it’s time to consider Under bets in Mountaineer games again.

App State came up short in the Sun Belt title game, losing 24-16 at No. 17 Louisiana. They Mountaineers are 6-1 SU/5-2 ATS in their previous seven games. They’re a solid defensive squad, allowing just 10.3 points per game across the final four games.

WESTERN KENTUCKY (+115) is a value play in this bowl game at plus-money.

The key matchup will be Appalachian State’s passing defense against Western Kentucky’s air attack, which ranks first in the country with 434.6 yards per game

The Hilltoppers, led by QB Bailey Zappe (69.2 comp%, 5,545 yards, 56 TD), can score with the best of them. The Mountaineers are going to be under a full blitzkrieg the entire afternoon. WKU has two receivers with at least 1,299 receiving yards and at least 12 touchdowns in Jerreth Sterns and Mitchell Tinsley.

Appalachian State was a solid defensive unit this season, ranking in the top 20 in nearly every category. It allowed 206.6 passing yards per game to rank 31st in the nation.

Against the spread

WESTERN KENTUCKY +2.5 (-105) is a little less attractive at this price. If you like the Hilltoppers, just take them straight up for plus-money. The chances of a 1- or 2-point win by App State, and a WKU cover, are slight.

Over/Under

The OVER 66.5 (-112) is the play. App State will want to force its will on WKU, and will try to slow the ‘Toppers down. But nobody has been able to do that this season.

Western Kentucky scored 43.1 PPG to rank second in the nation, while allowing 28.7 PPG. The Hilltoppers even put up 31 apiece in a pair of losses at Michigan State and Indiana earlier in the season.

The Mountaineers picked up a win and cover at the Georgia State Panthers 45-16 in Week 5. App State is 0-2 ATS in two home games, but 3-0 ATS in road games and neutral-site appearances.

The Ragin’ Cajuns enter on a four-game win streak since a loss at the Texas Longhorns in their opener Sept. 4. Louisiana won 20-18 against South Alabama Oct. 2 as a 12-point favorite in its last game, slipping to 1-4 ATS. The Under is 4-1 in five outings.

It’s a little more than I normally care to play, but APPALACHIAN STATE (-200) is a solid play on the road. They have dominated this all-time series, winning eight of the previous nine meetings.

Louisiana did win last season’s meeting 24-21 in Boone, N.C., but that wasn’t in front of the normal hostile, full house at Kidd Brewer Stadium. The Ragin’ Cajuns lost the most recent meeting in Lafayette Oct. 9, 2019, a low-scoring 17-7 win in favor of the Mountaineers.

Against the spread

LOUISIANA +4.5 (-115) has been mediocre offensively lately, averaging just 24.0 PPG in the previous two outings, and is 1-4 ATS overall this season. However, the Ragin’ Cajuns have an experienced QB Levi Lewis under center, and they know how to beat this Mountaineers team.

I think App State exacts revenge for last season’s loss, but Louisiana will play them tough and grab the backdoor cover. The underdog is 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings.

Over/Under

The lean is to the UNDER 57.5 (-115), but it’s only worth a small-unit play. The Under has cashed in four of the last five meetings in this series. The Under is also 9-1 in the past 10 at home for Louisiana, and 5-1 in the past six inside the conference.

Marshall is coming off a disappointing 42-38 home loss to East Carolina. The Thundering Herd led that game 38-21 heading into the fourth quarter and outgained the Pirates 647 yards to 563. The setback against ECU came on the heels of two convincing wins that saw MU outscore Navy and North Carolina Central 93-17.

The Mountaineers are also 2-1 with a similar win and loss profile, although one of their wins was against East Carolina. Appalachian State has logged big-differential victories over ECU and FCS Elon and lost a 2-point game against Miami in between.

Thursday’s game marks the 24th all-time meeting between MU and ASU. The Mountaineers lead the series, 14-9.

Money line

The East Carolina comp is instructive, but only to a point with Marshall sort of “stat-winning” that game, blowing a lead late, and finishing minus-2 in turnover margin.

Appalachian State was undone 25-23 at Miami Sept. 11. The Hurricanes tallied two short-field scoring drives in the fourth quarter and the Mountaineers had a couple of clutch, big-boy drives in the second half.

Appy State is the lean, but the play against the number is more attractive: PASS on the money line.

Against the spread

Appalachian State was undone on third and fourth downs in a 17-7 loss at Marshall last season. The defeat was the lone setback for then-first-year head coach Shawn Clark in his team’s first seven games.

The line across the market has dropped for this one. With the Mountaineers capable of some game control red-zone punch-ins, and with a capable field goal kicker in PK Chandler Staton, they are the value side here.

The Mountaineers picked up a 33-19 win over East Carolina in a neutral-site game in Charlotte, North Carolina Sept. 2. App State had a 33-9 lead early in the fourth quarter before taking the foot off the gas. The Mountaineers were good for 226 yards on the ground, and 259 yards through the air.

The Hurricanes, No. 24 in the AFCA Coaches Poll, powered by USA TODAY Sports, were worked over by Alabama last week in Atlanta. The U is definitely not back after a 44-13 whitewashing, coming nowhere near a cover as 19.5-point underdogs.

A play on Miami (-320) will cost you three times your potential return, and that’s way too risky based upon its performance last week. They looked dead in the water early, but it was also against Alabama.

Against the spread

APPALACHIAN STATE +8.5 (-112) has a tremendous rushing attack, and they’ll put Miami -8.5 (-108) to the test. I think the Hurricanes end up earning a hard-fought victory, but this won’t be easy.

The Mountaineers boasted two 100-yard tailbacks last week, as RB Nate Noel led the way with 126 yards, while veteran RB Camerun Peeples also hit triple digits with 100 yards and two scores.

Over/Under

OVER 54.5 (-110) is the play, as we have two talented teams taking the field in South Florida.

We touched on App State’s rushing attack, but don’t discount Miami’s offense after their blowout loss. I think Miami QB D’Eriq King, who made it through his first game back after a gruesome injury, should show out and put up some nice numbers after being snowed under last week early.

This game has the potential to be a shootout and an unexpected good game.

The Norfolk State Spartans (16-7) take on the Appalachian State Mountaineers (17-11) in a West Region First Four game Thursday night. Norfolk State carries a six-game win streak into its first tournament game since 2012. The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference champion struggles in shooting the ball inside the perimeter, but the Spartans knock down 3-pointers at a hefty 36.8% clip and get to the free-throw line with great frequency. The triples and singles add up: NSU ranked second in MEAC scoring at 75.2 points per game.

The Mountaineers have played the tougher schedule this season and they endured a five-game losing streak from Jan. 29-Feb. 23. Since then, ASU has won five of six games; three of those wins were of the OT variety.

The Spartans are much the better 3-point shooting squad and perimeter defense is a blind spot for Appy State. NSU is on a solid momentum swing.

Add in Appalachian State’s slow tempo, and there is value to be leveraged on the UNDER 133.5 (-110).

The Mean Green of UNT head into this game with a 4-5 SU record, but they still qualified for the inaugural Myrtle Beach Bowl. The Mean Green have officially played in 10 NCAA-sanctioned bowl games, and they’re just 2-8 SU. They won the Salad Bowl back in 1947, falling to Nevada by a 13-6 score. Their last victory came against UNLV in the 2013 Heart of Dallas Bowl.
Appalachian State is the only team in the FBS to have a perfect bowl record (min. five appearances), going a perfect 5-0 SU. They’re heavily favored to keep that unblemished record intact. They have won a bowl game in each of the past five seasons, too, including last season’s 31-17 win over UAB in the New Orleans Bowl.
Appalachian State ranks sixth in the nation with just 169.8 passing yards per game allowed. That will be put to the test against North Texas, who ranks seventh in total yards per game (515.0) with 284.8 passing yards per outing. UNT WR Jaelon Darden registered 1,190 receiving yards and 19 touchdowns in just nine games.

Appalachian State (-1200) is heavily favored to move to 6-0 all-time in bowl games, and it’s hard to imagine the sub-.500 North Texas (+750) side spoiling the day.

Add to the fact that there will be some fans, and a majority of them will come from neighboring North Carolina, it will be a Yosef-heavy crowd. Still, you can’t risk 12 times your potential return.

NORTH TEXAS +21.5 (-115) is worth a small-unit play, especially for that hook. The Mean Green have enough offensive firepower that they should at least be able to keep the heavily favored Appalachian State -21.5 (-105) side within hailing distance.

Troy at Appalachian State: Three things to know

The Trojans are coming off a disappointing 20-17 loss against Middle Tennessee at home last week. That came on the heels of a 20-13 loss at Georgia Southern, so they’re 0-2 straight up and ATS in the past two, and 1-3 SU/ATS in theit previous four, including a pair of losses and non-covers at home.
Appalachian State went to Conway, S.C., and gave unbeaten Coastal Carolina a good game last week. Down their leading rusher, the Mountaineers led 17-9 at halftime, and they trailed just 21-20 after three quarters. CCU pulled away in the fourth quarter for the 34-23 win and cover.
App State has won six of eight games overall, but it’s a dismal 1-7 ATS overall, including 1-3 ATS in four home dates. The Under has connected in six of its eight games overall, too, as the Mountaineers are scoring 31.0 points per game while yielding just 16.0 PPG.

Appalachian State (-527) is going to be awfully angry as it returns home after a tough loss last week, which all but ends its chances of a division title; however, you can’t risk more than five times your potential return. AVOID, and look to the spread.

Against the spread (ATS)

APPALACHIAN STATE -13.5 (-110) has covered just once this season, but it is the play here. Daetrich Harrington, the team’s leading rusher, remains sidelined, but Camerun Peoples filled in admirably and appears more than capable of handling the starting chores while Harrington is down. Troy has lost to a pair of marginal teams over the past two games, and is 0-4 ATS in its past four tries against teams with a winning record.

Over/Under (O/U)

UNDER 48.5 (-110) is a strong play in this one, and it’s the overwhelming trend for the Trojans. The Under is 4-0 in their past four as underdogs, 8-1-1 in their past 10 overall and 10-1 in their past 11 as road dogs. For the boys from Boone, App State has cashed the Under in four of its past five, including 4-0 in its past four as a favorite.
