Money line

COASTAL CAROLINA (-220) heads into this rivalry game looking to keep its record unblemished. This is a little over my normal cut-off for a money line wager, but it isn’t a terrible price if you just want to bet the Chanticleers straight up and not bother with the points, especially on the road.

Against the spread

COASTAL CAROLINA -5.5 (-112) has been on fire offensively, as QB Grayson McCall has thrown for 1,478 passing yards with 14 touchdowns and just one interception through six games, while also running for two scores. CCU has covered three straight, and five of six overall — they’re on quite the roll.

Appalachian State is a mess and coming off an embarrassing loss. It remains to be seen if it can turn things around, even at home.

Over/Under

OVER 61.5 (-107) is a strong play based on Coastal’s outstanding offensive output. While the Chants have allowed just 29 total points across the past three games, and the Under is 3-1 in their past four outings overall, you can expect the Mountaineers to be better at home as they rebound from one of their worst games in decades. They’ll put up points in front of the home faithful, it just won’t be enough to win.

Appalachian State at Tennessee: Three things to know

App State rides in on a two-game win and cover streak, topping Charlotte 61-57 last time out on the road as three-point underdogs. They’re just one bucket short of a perfect record, as their only loss came Nov. 30 against Bowling Green in a 78-76 overtime setback.
Tennessee has hit the hardwood just twice so far, topping Colorado and Cincinnati, winning by nine in each outing. They covered each game with the Under connecting in both. The Vols are averaging just 60.5 PPG to rank 302nd in the nation, but they’re fifth defensively with only 51.5 PPG allowed.
The Mountaineers are averaging 80.8 PPG overall. They’re a very good free-throw shooting team, hitting at an 82.2-percent clip. Defensively the Mountaineers have allowed just 55.2 PPG, and they’re holding opponents to 35.7 percent from the floor.

Tennessee (-5000) will cost you $100 for every $2 won, which is not a good betting strategy for the long term. PASS.

Against the spread (ATS)

APPALACHIAN STATE +19 (-110) is the play, as Tennessee -19 (-110) just haven’t rolled up big offensive numbers this season and haven’t come close to blowing anyone out. The Mountaineers will definitely give them a good test with their high-flying offense.

Over/Under (O/U)

UNDER 130.5 (-110) is the lean, hitting in each of the past two for App State and both of the games for Tennessee. The Mountaineers are a strong defensive team, and they’ll keep the Vols down. Tennessee is also very deliberate on the offensive end, and they play suffocating defense, too. This game should be squarely in the 120’s.

However, Colorado should be a lot better than they were against Tennessee’s suffocating defense, and they won’t be nearly as rusty.

The weather forecast for Boone, N.C., calls for temperatures in the low 40’s with a 60% chance of a steady rain and a slight breeze. That should make for a more ground-based attack for both sides.
Louisiana registered a 70-20 win on the road against rival UL Monroe; it has have covered the spread in back-to-back games for the first time this season. ULL is averaging 217.3 rushing yards per game, ranking 22nd in the nation. Defensively, the Cajuns allowed just 175.2 passing yards to rank ninth while yielding 21.9 points per game, good for 23rd in the country.
App State registered a 47-10 win over Troy, bouncing back from a 34-23 loss at Coastal Carolina. It was a rare cover, too, as the Mountaineers entered last week’s game just 1-7 ATS. App State is seventh in the nation with 256.6 rushing yards per game, and it has allowed just 18.0 PPG to rank 15th in the country.

Money line (ML)

I expect this game to be very close, so playing APPALACHIAN STATE (-139) on the money line is the better play in the rain. The Mountaineers are 5-0 straight up 2-3 ATS in five games at Kidd Brewer Stadium in Boone this season, so play the money line and don’t worry about the points.

Against the spread (ATS)

APPALACHIAN STATE -2.5 (-115) is the lean here, although as mentioned above, the money line is the better play. The Mountaineers should keep this a mostly ground-based attack, even without RB Daetrich Harrington, who’s out indefinitely due to an undisclosed injury. RB Camerun Peoples has proven he is more than capable of doing the job, and he overtook Harrington as the leading rusher last week.

Over/Under (O/U)

UNDER 51.5 (-115) is worth a small-unit play, as the two sides are strong rushing teams, and running the ball keeps the clock running. That’s always a friend to Under bettors. We mentioned App State’s backs, but ULL’s Elijah Mitchell and Trey Ragas have a combined 1,273 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns this season, so they’re more than capable, too. They’ll be needed in the rain.

Appalachian State at Coastal Carolina: Three things to know

App State lost QB Zac Thomas in the fourth quarter of last week’s game after a hit out of bounds by a Georgia State defender. Thomas was hospitalized as a precaution, but there is a chance he plays Saturday. If Thomas cannot go, Jacob Huesman would take the reins of the offense. Unfortunately for the Mountaineers, the same isn’t true for leading rusher RB Daetrich Harrington, who is out for the season due to a foot injury.
App State is 5-0 straight up but just 1-4 ATS since its lone setback at Marshall on Sept. 19. Overall, the Mountaineers are just 1-6 ATS, while Coastal Carolina has posted an impressive 5-1-1 ATS record this season, including 2-0-1 ATS in three home games against FBS opponents.
CCU has been balanced on both sides of the line. The Chanticleers are 26th in points scored per game (37.9), while racking up 203.3 rushing yards per contest to rank 34th in the country. They are 14th in total yards allowed (309.6), 10th in passing yards allowed (174.3) and 11th in points allowed (16.3) per game.

Money line (ML)

Coastal Carolina (-223) was picked to finish last in the East Division in preseason polls. Now, it has a chance to seize the East with a win, and Appalachian State (+180) enters with some nicks and bruises. Still, risking more than two times your potential return in a game which can go either way is foolhardy. AVOID.

Against the spread (ATS)

COASTAL CAROLINA -5.5 (-110) is the play here, mainly because of health. Head coach Jamey Chadwell’s team is in much better shape, as the loss of Harrington will really hurt Appalachian State. If Thomas doesn’t play, that’s even worse.

Over/Under (O/U)

UNDER 48.5 (-115) is always a risky play, as college games are generally high-scoring affairs in this day and age, but CCU has a lockdown defense, and App State will be without its leading rusher, and perhaps its starting signal-caller.

The Mountaineers struggled in a 17-13 win over Georgia State in which the Under hit easily when injuries struck. Look for a defensive slog in this Sun Belt (Fun Belt!) showdown.

Due to COVID-19 protocols, the Mountaineers haven’t played since Sept. 26, when they downed FCS foe Campbell, 52-21. Appalachian State’s break included a university shutdown, but the team returned to practice Wednesday, Oct. 14. The Mountaineers’ lone defeat this season — a 17-7 loss as six-point favorites — came against Marshall (Sept. 19).
Arkansas State’s 2-1 mark includes an impressive 35-31 win over a Kansas State team currently ranked 19th in the Amway Coaches Poll. Redshirt Junior QB Logan Bonner and redshirt freshman QB Layne Hatcher have combined to throw 21 touchdown passes against just four interceptions in an aerial game which has cranked out 384.2 yards per game (third FBS).
This contest features a Red Wolves program which ranked 10th in FBS passing yards last season when it racked up 312.1 per game. Arkansas State has tallied 384.2 per game (third) so far in 2020. The other ASU here has been as prolific in its ground game. The Mountaineers ranked 16th in rushing yards in 2019 (231.4); they rank fifth in 2020 (269.3).

For the Mountaineers, this type of game presents a tough return to action. In coughing up 38.9 PPG, Arkansas State’s defense has been defeated by explosive plays, especially on passing downs. A little bit of improvement (or regression to normalized results) can make for a one-score game, likely in a bit of a shootout.

Over/Under (O/U)

Dating back to last fall, the Over has prevailed in seven of Arkansas State’s last nine games. On the Appalachian State side, the Under is 8-4 over the Mountaineers’ last dozen games.
