ESPN’s Charlie Creme highlights Notre Dame in big early-season games

Be sure to watch these games.

Notre Dame is expected to do well this season. Its No. 6 ranking in the AP Top 25 Preseason Poll is evidence of that. Naturally, some of its early games will receive a lot of attention.

In light of the poll’s release, ESPN women’s basketball bracketologist Charlie Creme has published a story that answers the question of what the biggest early-season game is for each team ranked in that poll.

Creme has the Irish’s ACC/SEC Women’s Basketball Challenge matchup against Texas as the Irish’s biggest game and gives the following reason:

“Both the Irish and Longhorns saw freshmen become stars a season ago with their team leaders out with injury. Rori Harmon is back for Texas to team up with Madison Booker, and [autotag]Niele Ivey[/autotag] can now pair [autotag]Hannah Hidalgo[/autotag] and [autotag]Olivia Miles[/autotag], returning from a knee injury. This is a dream backcourt matchup that could define which duo is meshing the best. This looks to be the best Irish team under Ivey. This game and one a week later against UConn, also in South Bend, should tell us just how good.”

The Irish also will face USC early in the season, and Creme has that game as the biggest for the Trojans, who rank third in the poll. Here’s the reason for that:

“A week before the two schools square off in football in Los Angeles, they do the same in basketball. Both the Trojans and the Irish should be in the mix for a No. 1 seed come March, and the winner of this game takes a massive advantage in that quest. One month before (JuJu) Watkins gets to go head-to-head with (Paige) Bueckers, she faces Hannah Hidalgo, the second-best freshman to Watkins a year ago.”

So yeah, there are a few game on the schedule you won’t want to miss. Simply put, don’t.

Kentucky women’s basketball is ranked in the preseason AP Top 25

Kentucky women’s basketball will start the season ranked 22nd in the preseason AP Top 25 poll.

One day after the Kentucky men’s basketball team came in at number 23 in the AP Top 25, the Kentucky women’s basketball team shows up on the preseason AP Top 25 poll as well.

The Wildcats, and new coach Kenny Brooks come in at number 22 in the poll, one spot higher than the men’s team. They are the sixth ranked team out of the SEC in the poll, with South Carolina at the top.

Related: Analysts predict where Kentucky will finish in the SEC

Like Mark Pope, Kenny Brooks enters his first season as the coach at Kentucky. He also assembled his team with several transfers which will play a big role for the 2024-25 squad. It does have a lot of veteran leadership, however, which will come in handy in March.

This season will be an interesting one for Brooks and company. Preseason polls are fun to look at, but have no real bearing on the season. For now, however, the voters have some respect for what Kentucky has put together. Fans will have to see how it plays out.

LSU women’s basketball a top-10 team in preseason AP Top 25

The Tigers enter Kim Mulkey’s fourth season with high expectations yet again.

The 2024-25 season will be a year of change for the LSU women’s basketball team.

The Tigers lost star [autotag]Angel Reese[/autotag], who had a fantastic rookie season in the WNBA. [autotag]Hailey Van Lith[/autotag] also opted to move on in the transfer portal.

But it’s another talented roster headlined by returning stars [autotag]Flau’Jae Johnson[/autotag] and [autotag]Aneesah Morrow[/autotag], and it’s bolstered by an impressive transfer class filled with veteran, experienced players.

There’s still a lot of optimism around Kim Mulkey’s team, and the Tigers open the year ranked No. 7 in the preseason AP Top 25. They’re one of seven ranked SEC teams and the third highest behind No. 1 South Carolina — the defending national champion — and No. 4 Texas.

In total, there are four SEC teams ranked in the top 10.

Notre Dame women’s basketball ranks sixth in AP Top 25 Preseason Poll

Get on the bandwagon right now.

The expectations for the Notre Dame women’s basketball team couldn’t be higher. This roster is stacked, and everybody is taking notice. If this year’s Irish don’t get to at least the Final Four, this season widely will be seen as a disappointment.

The AP Top 25 Preseason Poll has been released, and the Irish rank very highly on it. Specifically, they rank sixth, which is the highest they’ve been ranked in this particular poll since they began the 2018-19 season as the top-ranked team fresh off their most recent national championship.

This season will mark the return of [autotag]Olivia Miles[/autotag], the former national player of the year runner-up who missed all of last season with a knee injury. She’ll be teamed in the backcourt with [autotag]Hannah Hidalgo[/autotag], who herself was a national player of the year runner-up a season ago. This could be the most lethal guard combo in program history.

The Irish have some injury issues of course, but every team will go through those. They’ll be ready no matter who’s available:

The regular season tips off Nov. 4 against Mercyhurst. It should be a fun few months of Irish women’s basketball.

For the first time since 2019, the Florida Gators men’s basketball team will begin the regular season as a ranked team. The Associated Press released its preseason Top 25 poll on Monday, and the Orange and Blue check in at No. 21 in the country entering Year 3 of the Todd Golden era.

Florida briefly appeared in last year’s poll, occupying the No. 24 spot for two weeks in February. A first-round exit in the NCAA Tournament meant the Gators finished outside of the top 25, but retaining guards [autotag]Walter Clayton Jr[/autotag]. and [autotag]Will Richard[/autotag] has UF starting off the season higher than any point last season.

Florida joins eight other SEC programs in the preseason AP Poll — No. 2 Alabama, No. 11 Auburn, No. 12 Tennessee, No. 13 Texas A&M, No. 16 Arkansas, No. 19 Texas, No. 23 Kentucky and No. 24 Ole Miss. The Gators will face each of those teams during the regular season.

No. 9 North Carolina is also on Florida’s schedule this year, and three more opponents earned votes in the preseason poll.

Florida begins its season with a neutral site matchup on Nov. 4 against South Florida in Jacksonville. The home opener is three days later against Jacksonville University.

Kentucky basketball is number 23 in the preseason AP Top 25 Poll

Kentucky basketball is ranked 23rd in the preseason AP Top 25 poll.

Just how the 2024-25 Kentucky basketball season will play out is a mystery at this point. After Mark Pope was hired as the new head coach, he had to build an entire roster from scratch, and had to rely on transfers to do so.

Still, it’s Kentucky, and they attracted some of the top players in the transfer portal, and have assembled a veteran team with plenty of players that fit Pope’s system. They have enough talent that the voters for the AP put the Wildcats in the preseason top 25.

Kentucky is ranked 23rd in the preseason AP Top 25, and they’re the eighth highest SEC team in the rankings. The Alabama Crimson Tide are the top SEC team, ranked second. John Calipari’s new team, Arkansas, comes in at number 16.

The preseason poll is a fun look at how teams are perceived, but they’re no indication of how the season will go. Kentucky hopes to finish much higher than they’re starting, but being ranked after a tumultuous offseason isn’t bad.

Sooners absent from preseason AP Top 25, nine SEC teams featured

Oklahoma Sooners absent from preseason men’s basketball AP Top 25 poll.

Much of the dialogue surrounding Oklahoma and Texas’ move to the SEC centered on each school’s football program and the benefits it would receive. Oklahoma boasts a deep and well-rounded athletic program that would fit in with any conference landscape. OU men’s basketball will also get a bump as it enters the SEC.

Oklahoma’s move to the nation’s premiere basketball conference is set to begin in less than a month. The excitement for the season will soon reach a fever pitch.

On Monday, the preseason AP Top 25 debuted, and unsurprisingly, Porter Moser’s squad was left off.

The Sooners bring back a few players from last year’s team that just missed the NCAA Tournament. The Sooners retooled via the portal in a big way but still have a lot to prove on the hardwood.

Their new conference mates make up 36 percent of the top 25 as nine SEC teams made the poll.

The Sooners will take on eight of those nine schools at some point in their first year in the SEC. The only one they won’t play is the Tennessee Volunteers.

The Oklahoma Sooners will have an incredible challenge ahead of them as they attempt to brave the grind of the SEC schedule. Porter Moser is looking for his first trip to the NCAA tournament since arriving in 2021.

Clemson unranked in preseason AP Top 25 Men’s College Basketball Poll

Clemson is considered a top 40 college basketball team by AP poll voters.

The preseason AP Top 25 Men’s College Basketball Poll was released Monday, three weeks before the Clemson Tigers open the 2024-25 season against Charleston Southern at Littlejohn Coliseum.

Clemson was unranked in the preseason AP poll but received nine votes for Top 25 consideration by the various sportswriters and broadcasters who make up the poll.

The Tigers’ nine votes were tied with three other teams, including the Boise State Broncos, who Clemson will face Nov. 17 in a marquee nonconference matchup pitting two teams that reached the NCAA Tournament a season ago. The Saint Louis Billikens and Providence Friars also received nine votes.

Outside the Top 25, a total of 13 teams received more votes than Clemson, meaning the Tigers are considered a top 40 team by the media members who make up the AP poll. Two of those teams were Wake Forest and Miami; the Demon Deacons with 37 votes and the Hurricanes with 11.

The Kansas Jayhawks were ranked preseason No. 1 in the AP poll, followed by the Alabama Crimson Tide at No. 2 and two-time defending national champion UConn at No. 3. The Houston Cougars (No. 4) and Iowa State Cyclones (No. 5) rounded out the top five.

The ACC had just two teams ranked in the preseason poll: the Duke Blue Devils at No. 7 and North Carolina Tar Heels at No. 9.

Clemson made the NCAA Tournament last season as a No. 6 seed and reeled off three straight wins (against New Mexico, the Baylor Bears and Arizona Wildcats) to reach the Elite Eight for the first time since 1980. The Tigers fell 89-82 to Alabama with a trip to the Final Four on the line.

This season, coach Brad Brownell’s team returns sixth-year senior guard Chase Hunter and senior forward Ian Schieffelin, the ACC’s Most Improved Player from a season ago.

Clemson and Charleston Southern are scheduled to tip off at 7 p.m. ET on Nov. 4 in the regular season opener.

Eight SEC teams ranked inside AP Top 25 after Week 7

The SEC boasts eight teams ranked inside the AP Top 25 after seven full weeks of play. Six of those teams are on Florida’s schedule.

Florida hasn’t appeared on the AP Top 25 all season, but eight SEC teams are ranked following Week 7 of the college football season.

Texas remains on top of the rankings after a 34-3 win over Oklahoma, earning 56 of 62 first-place votes. Georgia checks in at No. 5, two spots ahead of an Alabama team that beat them two weeks ago. However, a loss to Vanderbilt last week has the Crimson Tide at No. 7 right now.

LSU continues to claim up the rankings following a three-point win over Ole Miss. The Rebels were once ranked in the top 10 but are now all the way down to No. 18.

Four of the five ranked teams mentioned above loom on Florida’s schedule.

The Gators challenged the Tennessee Volunteers this week, which led to a three-spot dip to the No. 11 spot. Texas A&M beat Florida by 13 points a month ago when they were unranked, but now the Aggies check in at No. 14 overall.

Missouri rounds out the list of SEC teams inside the AP Top 25 this week at No. 19 after a 45-3 win over UMass.

LSU climbs into top 10 in AP Top 25 after upset win over Ole Miss

The Tigers are now a consensus top-10 team after their overtime win over the Rebels.

LSU kept its College Football Playoff hopes alive with one of the most significant wins of the [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] era on Saturday night against Ole Miss.

In a game they never led until it was over, the Tigers hung around and managed to make enough timely plays to get the game to overtime despite offensive inefficiency. After forcing a field goal, [autotag]Garrett Nussmeier[/autotag] won the game with a 25-yard passing touchdown to [autotag]Kyren Lacy[/autotag].

With the win, LSU is the biggest climber in the AP Top 25 after Week 7, moving up five spots into the top 10 and coming in at No. 8. The Tigers also rank No. 8 in the US LBM Coaches Poll, though they entered the week ranked in the top 10.

The Tigers will be a consensus top-10 team when they hit the road to face Arkansas in Week 8. Here’s the full AP Top 25 after Week 7.
