Did Texas A&M basketball make a move in the AP Top 25 Poll after Week 6?

After a 70-66 victory over the Purdue Boilermakers in the Indy Classic A&M moves up five spots in the Top 25 poll

Texas A&M is on a roll and head coach Buzz Williams as they playing some of the best basketball we have seen in a few years. NCAA basketball is starting to take notice as A&M has its highest ranking since 2018 in the AP Top 25 poll.

Aggie basketball has only been getting better during their non-conference schedule and has a 9-2 record. It was mainly due to their top-ranked defense and ability to get to the free-throw line. In the Indy Classic against Purdue, they took another step forward with one of their better shooting games of the season in the 70-66 win.

Tennessee, Auburn, and Iowa State held on the top three spots with Marquette falling out of the top five down to No. 9. The Aggies are now on a five-game winning streak, and leaped five spots to No. 12 and are one of eight SEC teams in the Top 25

The Aggies are only going to get better and if they push their shooting percentage over 42%, the sky is the limit for this team.

How far did Alabama rise in Week 6 AP Top 25 poll after big road win?

Here’s where Alabama ranks in Monday’s new AP Top 25 men’s basketball poll.

Nate Oats and the Alabama Crimson Tide picked up a big road win in a tough environment last week against the North Carolina Tar Heels in Chapel Hill in the SEC/ACC Challenge.

Thanks to the Crimson Tide’s 94-79 win at UNC, Alabama (7-2 overall) rose three spots to No. 7 in the Week 6 AP Top 25 men’s college basketball poll, released Monday. The Tide beat North Carolina behind 20 points from Mark Sears and 15 apiece from freshman Labaron Philon and Aden Holloway.

In Monday’s AP poll, Alabama ranked one spot behind Marquette (9-1) at No. 6 and one spot ahead of Gonzaga (7-2) at No. 8. The Crimson Tide were also ranked No. 7 in this week’s Coaches Poll.

The Kentucky Wildcats (8-1) rounded out the top five at No. 5.

Notre Dame moves up one spot in AP Top 25 Poll

Notre Dame is now number three in the AP Top 25

Notre Dame sits at No. 3 in the AP Top 25 Poll as the College Football Playoff field has been set.

Despite that, the Fighting Irish got the seventh seed in the CFP field. That’s partly because as an independent, Notre Dame could do no better than the fifth seed. Still, the Irish have a home game against Indiana.

The top five is Oregon, Georgia, Notre Dame, Texas and Penn State. Ohio State, Tennessee, Boise State, Indiana and Arizona State round out the top 10.

Major movers include Clemson and Army, both up five spots, and UNLV, which dropped five spots. SMU slid four places after losing a tight one to Clemson in the ACC Championship.

Georgia moves up three after an overtime victory against Texas in the SEC Championship.

Notre Dame women’s basketball drops to No. 3 seed in ESPN bracketology

The Irish’s perception continues to suffer.

The Notre Dame women’s basketball team lost both games it played in the Cayman Islands Classic to TCU and Utah. In doing so, it seriously hurt its perception among those who follow women’s basketball for a living.

Not only did the Irish drop seven spots in the latest AP Top 25 poll from third to 10th, further than any other team, but they fell in Charlie Creme’s latest bracketology for ESPN. After a road win over USC allowed them to ascend to a No. 1 seed, they have fallen to a No. 3 seed.

What’s more, the Irish are in the quadrant featuring UConn, the top overall seed in this bracketology. Meanwhile, the Horned Frogs have been bumped up to a No. 2 seed.

While the Irish remain highly ranked, this past week has led many to believe they aren’t as good as previously thought. The good news is it’s early in the season still, and there’s plenty of time to convince people to come back around on them. But it might become harder if they don’t beat at least one of Texas or the Huskies in two of their next three games.

Notre Dame women’s basketball drops seven spots in latest AP Top 25

The Irish have a storm to navigate.

The Notre Dame women’s basketball team had a very damaging Thanksgiving weekend. After getting swept in the Cayman Islands Classic by TCU and Utah, the voters in the first AP Top 25 Poll of December were not sympathetic.

The Irish dropped seven spots in the latest poll from No. 3 to No. 10. That was the biggest fall of any team from the previous poll. Meanwhile, the Horned Frogs had the biggest jump of any team from that poll, ascending from No. 17 to just past the Irish at No. 9. The Utes didn’t crack the poll but received five votes after not accumulating any in the previous week.

Just when the Irish were riding high after beating USC on the road, reality has hit them hard. It’s a reminder that this season might not be as smooth a ride as many thought it would be. The test for them now is responding well to this setback beginning with their game against No. 5 Texas in the ACC/SEC Challenge.

Alabama’s AP Top 25 poll ranking after big games in nonconference play

Here’s where Nate Oats and the Alabama Crimson Tide are ranked in the new AP Top 25 men’s basketball poll.

Nate Oats and the Alabama Crimson Tide fell in the Week 5 AP Top 25 men’s college basketball poll, released Monday.

The Crimson Tide (6-2 overall) fell one spot to No. 10 after going 2-1 at the Players Era Festival in Las Vegas last week. Alabama won its third straight game since 2021 against Kelvin Sampson’s Houston Cougars, 85-80, on Tuesday. They followed it up with a 95-90 win over Rutgers before falling 83-81 to the Oregon Ducks in the championship game of the Players Era Festival on Saturday night.

Mark Sears, Grant Nelson and the Crimson Tide are ranked one spot below the Duke Blue Devils (5-2) and freshman sensation Cooper Flagg at No. 9. The Tide are ranked one spot ahead of the Wisconsin Badgers (8-0) at No. 11 in the AP poll.

Alabama fell three spots to No. 12 in the new USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll, also released Monday.

Bill Self’s Kansas Jayhawks (7-0) remained No. 1 for the fourth straight week after entering 2024 as preseason No. 1 in the polls. Bruce Pearl’s Auburn Tigers (7-0) rose two spots to No. 2 while the Tennessee Volunteers (7-0) moved up four spots to No. 3.

The Kentucky Wildcats (7-0), led by first-year coach Mark Pope, rose four spots to No. 4, giving the SEC three teams in the top five. The Marquette Golden Eagles (8-0) rounded out the top five.

In all, the SEC had eight teams in the new AP Top 25 poll. In addition to Alabama, Auburn, Tennessee and Kentucky, the Florida Gators (8-0) rose five spots to No. 13 while the Oklahoma Sooners moved into the Top 25 at No. 21 following a 7-0 start.

The Texas A&M Aggies (6-2) slipped two spots to No. 22, and the Ole Miss Rebels (6-1) entered the rankings at No. 23.

The two-time defending national champion UConn Huskies (5-3) suffered the biggest drop of any ranked team, plummeting 23 spots to No. 25 after losing three straight games at the Maui Invitational. Dan Hurley’s team lost to the No. 16 Memphis Tigers, the Colorado Buffaloes and the Dayton Flyers in Maui.

Alabama basketball 2024-25 schedule

Next up for the Crimson Tide is a trip to Chapel Hill to face the No. 20 North Carolina Tar Heels in the SEC/ACC Challenge. Tipoff for Alabama vs. North Carolina is scheduled for 6:15 p.m. CT Wednesday. The game will be televised on ESPN.

Alabama met North Carolina in the Sweet 16 last March, an 89-87 Crimson Tide victory over the No. 1 seed Tar Heels.

Did Texas A&M basketball make a move in the AP Top 25 Poll after Week 4?

Texas A&M maintains a top 25 ranking after going 2-1 in the Players Era Festival Tournament

Texas A&M basketball (6-2) earned a few quality wins while participating in the inaugural Players Era Festival Tournament in Las Vegas. They finished fifth in a stacked tournament with several top-25 teams.

Coach Buzz Williams has a solid team that will win several games this season but if they want to make it past the second round of the NCAA tournament, they must shoot the ball better. Against Quad1/2 teams they are struggling to above 40% from the field and 30% from three, but it’s still early and Buzz is still working out his best rotation when points are needed.

There was a lot of movement in the poll this week behind No. 1 Kansas with Oregon making the biggest jump from unranked to No. 12 after winning the Players Era Festival. Memphis also made a big jump back into the rankings to No. 16 and the Aggies despite going 2-1 during the tournament dropped two spots to No. 22

Below is the most recent AP Top 25 Poll after Week 4:

  1. Kansas 7-0
  2. Auburn 7-0

  6. Iowa State 5-1

Texas A&M unsurprisingly drops out of the AP Top 25 after falling to Texas

Here are the lastest AP Top 25 rankings after Texas A&M’s 17-7 loss to the Texas Longhorns

Texas A&M (8-4, 5-3 SEC) ended the 2024 season with a disappointing loss to the Texas Longhorns (11-1, 7-1 SEC), who are now headed to the SEC Championship game amid the program’s first season in the conference.

Credit to Texas for keeping A&M’s offense out of the end zone, as the only touchdown came off of cornerback Will Lee’s pick-six, while Aggies OC Collin Klein came up short on several head-scratching play calls that led to two fourth-down stops in the red zone.

Head coach Mike Elko’s season will end at 8-4, which was predicted by many of us before the season began. However, the injury to star running back Le’Veon Moss completely changed the Aggies’ offensive gameplan, forcing QB Marcel Reed to drop back more than his lack of passing development could handle.

Texas A&M will now play in a meaningless bowl game with a chance to earn nine wins on the year. At the same time, the Longhorns are headed to the SEC Championship game amid their first season in the conference, so credit to head coach Steve Sarkisian and his team for accomplishing something the Aggies couldn’t in 12 seasons.

With all the conference games set, here are the latest AP Top 25 rankings, as Texas A&M has officially dropped out of the rankings:

AP Top 25 Rankings after Week 14:

  1. Oregon (12-0)
  2. Texas (11-1)

  10. Boise State (11-1)
  11. Alabama (9-3)
  12. Arizona State (10-2)

Notre Dame moves up one spot in AP Top 25 poll after beating USC

Notre Dame’s reward for beating is USC is a one-spot jump in the AP Top 25 poll.

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish have jumped one spot to No. 4 in the AP Top 25 poll after beating the USC Trojans 49-35 on Saturday.

This should help the Irish secure not just a playoff berth but perhaps a home game in the first round.

It was another shakeup Saturday thanks to some upsets, though the movement is limited compared to some previous polls this season.

Oregon remains No. 1. Ohio State’s loss to Michigan meant the Buckeyes slid five spots to No. 7. So that means the rest of last week’s top 5 moves up a spot.

So now the top five is Oregon, Texas, Penn State, Notre Dame and Georgia. The rest of the top 10 is Tennessee, Ohio State, SMU, Indiana and Boise State.

Other big movers included Miami (FL), which dropped six spots to No. 14 after losing to Syracuse and Clemson, which fell six spots to No. 18 after losing to South Carolina.
