Ohio State basketball barely makes preseason AP Top 25 basketball poll

The preseason AP College Basketball Poll is out and Ohio State just did make it into the rankings. Where did it land?

We might be in the middle of all the excitement that goes with an Ohio State football season that almost didn’t happen, but the Buckeyes’ hoops team will be hitting the floor soon.

And while it won’t happen as early as we expected with the news that OSU has pulled out of the Crossover Classic in South Dakota because of spiking COVID-19 cases there, we’re still less than a month out from tip-off. In fact, the first game of the 2020 season is scheduled to be a home game now on December 2 against Morehead State.

So yeah, things are getting close. So close that the Associated Press released its preseason men’s College Basketball top 25 on Monday. The good news? Ohio State is in the poll. The bad news? Barely. In fact, the Buckeyes check in all the way down at No. 23.

It’s to be expected really. The roster looks drastically different with a ton of turnover. Add that to a couple of guys still coming back from injury, and there are just too many unknowns heading into the season to have confidence that this team is going to compete for a spot anywhere close to the top ten.

So who made the top ten? Gonzaga is No. 1, followed by Baylor, Villanova, Virginia, Iowa, Kansas, Wisconsin, Illinois, Duke, and Kentucky.

Ohio State basketball finishes season inside top 20 of AP Poll

The Ohio State basketball team finished just inside the top 20 in the final release of the AP Top 25 College Basketball Poll.

The last Associated Press Top 25 College Basketball Poll has been released and Ohio State finishes the season just inside the top 20 at No. 19. Normally, there would be more basketball with a chance to improve that ranking, but with the Big Ten and NCAA Tournament both being canceled because of measures put in place to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus, that’s all she wrote.

Kansas finishes atop the poll followed by Gonzaga, Dayton, Florida State, and Baylor. San Diego State, Creighton, Kentucky, Michigan State, and Villanova round out the top ten.

The Big Ten finishes with six teams in the rankings. In addition to the Spartans and Buckeyes, Maryland (12), Wisconsin (17), Illinois (21), and Iowa (25) all made the cut.

Michigan, Penn State, Rutgers, and Purdue were among the other teams receiving votes.

Ohio State basketball remains No. 19 in latest AP Poll

The Ohio State basketball team kept its ranking of No. 19 in the latest AP Top 25 College Basketball Poll.

The last AP Top 25 College Basketball Poll of the regular season was released Monday and Ohio State hasn’t budged at all from last week, remaining at No. 19.

OSU lost its regular-season finale on the road to Michigan State, but it took down Illinois — a team tied for first place in the Big Ten at the time — so it was a push, push for the week.

But what about the Big Ten? The nation’s toughest conference had eight teams in the poll last week, but two of them dropped out, leaving now six teams appearing in the top 25. Those teams are Michigan State (9), Maryland (12), Wisconsin (18), Ohio State (19), Illinois (21), and Iowa (25). Michigan and Penn State both dropped out.

As far as the top five. It’s the usual suspects that we’ve seen hanging around that territory this year. Kansas remains No. 1, followed by Gonzaga, Dayton, Florida State, and Baylor. After dropping its second game of the year, San Diego State falls to No. 6.

Ohio State will get its postseason fired up Thursday when it plays Purdue in the Big Ten Tournament.

Ohio State basketball is back in the AP Top 25 Rankings

The Ohio State men’s basketball team has found its way back into the AP Top 25 College Basketball Poll, albeit barely.

After a January most would like to forget, the Ohio State basketball team has bounced back by winning five of its last six contests. The latest was a dominating start-to-finish defensive gem against Purdue at home. It pulled the Buckeyes back to the .500 mark in conference and boosted its overall record to 17-8, with six regular-season games to go.

For its efforts, OSU has now found itself back in the AP Top 25 that was released Monday — albeit barely at No. 25.

Ohio State makes just four teams from the Big Ten appearing in this week’s poll. Maryland is the highest ranked at No. 7, followed by Penn State at No. 9, and Iowa at No. 20. The top ten of the poll are now Baylor, Gonzaga, Kansas, San Diego State, Dayton, Duke, Maryland, Florida State, Penn State, and Kentucky.

The Buckeyes will now have a tough two-game stretch coming up with a game at Iowa on Thursday, and home against Maryland this coming Sunday.

Ohio State basketball falls out of the AP Top 25 Poll

For the first time this season, the Ohio State basketball team has fallen outside of the AP Top 25.

For the first time this season, the Ohio State basketball team is no longer in the Associate Press Top 25 College Basketball Poll.

What a fall it has been. The team sprinted out to a 9-0 record that included wins over Cincinnati and Villanova at home, and North Carolina on the road. It also stood at 11-1 just a few games later that included a win on a neutral court over the Kentucky Wildcats.

The Buckeyes were just one day away from being the No. 1 team in the country before it fell to West Virginia on December 29. It got as high as No. 2 overall after the win over Kentucky.

Now, less than three weeks and four more losses later and the Buckeyes are simply in the “other teams receiving votes” category, and it is clear that it’s time to reset expectations.

Baylor is the new No. 1 in the country, followed by Gonzaga, Kansas, San Diego State, and Florida State to round out the top five. Here is a complete look at the top 25.

Ohio State is next in action on Thursday against Minnesota at home. It needs a win in the worst way.
