ESPN’s SP+ ranks the Badgers higher than their current AP Poll slot

On September 1 ESPN released their updated SP+ rankings and opted to include every FBS team, even if their fall season had been postponed.

The metric projects team success based off three main factors: each program’s returning production, recent history and recruiting. It then quantifies those factors for both offense and defense and creates an SP+ number for each team.

The metric also gives a team their chance to win each game and adds them up to create a win total, with an 80 percent win chance for a given game equaling 0.8 wins–the Badgers and fellow Big Ten schools obviously not included in that aspect of the ranking.

So, coming in at the No. 8 slot in the updated rankings are the Wisconsin Badgers–four slots higher than their No. 12 ranking in the AP Poll.

No. 8 is good for third-best for a Big Ten team with Ohio State up top at No. 1 and Penn State one spot ahead of the Badgers at No. 7.

Specifically, Paul Chryst’s team was given a “projected SP+” of 21.6–just 0.7 behind No. 7 Penn State. Divided between offense and defense now, their 35.9 offensive rating was good for No. 17 in the nation and 14.3 defensive rating good for No. 5.

It’s hard seeing metrics and polls including ESPN FPI, SP+ and the AP Poll showing preseason love to Chryst and the Badgers with the team not set to play this season. The future is no doubt looking like a bright one for the program, but by all accounts this season was shaping up to be a special one in Madison and still could be come kickoff, whenever that day comes around.

Are the Texas Longhorns a top ten team? One analyst thinks so

Are the Longhorns being overhyped again or are they legit? Paul Myerberg of USA TODAY Sports ranked them inside his top ten.

As we inch closer to the college football season set to kick off on Sept. 12, we ask are the Texas Longhorns a top 10 team? Paul Myerberg of USA TODAY Sports believes they are. He recently ranked all 76 teams that are set to play college football this year.

His top ten teams:

  1. Clemson
  2. Alabama
  3. Georgia
  4. Oklahoma
  5. Notre Dame
  6. Florida
  7. LSU
  8. Texas
  9. Central Florida
  10. North Carolina

Is it a true belief that the Texas Longhorns are a top ten team or is it that this football team is habitually overhyped? Well the team did finish in the top 15 in both the Amway Coaches poll and the AP poll. Many feel that Texas could be on their way up with essentially a whole new staff.

The Longhorns schedule using Myerberg’s rankings

Date Team Ranking
Sept. 12 UTEP 76th
Sept. 26 Texas Tech 43rd
Oct. 3 TCU 21st
Oct. 10 Oklahoma 4th
Oct. 24 Baylor 50th
Oct. 31 Oklahoma State 12th
Nov. 7 West Virginia 35th
Nov. 21 Kansas 67th
Nov. 28 Iowa Sate 23rd
Dec. 5 Kansas State 31st

According to the rankings, Texas will face four opponents in the top 25. Obviously their biggest games come in October with Oklahoma and Oklahoma State. Iowa State will be another key game that comes in late November. For Texas to return to the Big 12 Championship game they likely need to go 2-1 or 3-0 in those games. A losing record could derail their hopes of playing for the Big 12 title in 2020.

We are just two weeks away from the opening game against the bottom ranked UTEP Miners. Following the opener Texas will have a week off before traveling to Lubbock to take on the Red Raiders at Jones AT&T Stadium.

3. The AP Poll ranked teams that aren’t playing

It’s going to be the year the AP ranked teams that aren’t doing the whole college football thing.

The AP voters got their rankings in before the Big Ten and Pac-12 decided to postpone their respective seasons, but unlike the Coaches Poll that came out before the conferences went dark, the AP didn’t release its top 25 until a few weeks after.

There was time to adjust.

It’s just not that hard to take the rankings as created by the voters and take out the teams that aren’t playing a 2020 fall season. It took me less than ten minutes to come up with the revised rankings.

If teams aren’t actually playing college football, then what’s the point of putting them in a ranking for a season? The Kansas City Chiefs are playing just as much college football in the fall of 2020 as Ohio State and Oregon are.

This was an easy way for the AP Top 25 Poll to shine a light on programs that normally would struggle to get close to the preseason top 25.

Appalachian State and Memphis would’ve been in. How much would it have mattered to a place like Arizona State, or Louisville, or Kentucky to make a preseason top 25 of teams actually playing?

And now what do you do? What, you honored Ohio State by giving it a preseason No. 2 ranking? All that does is mock the fan base with the Christmas present they don’t get to open.

But there’s a reason for all of this …

Maybe the AP has this right. Maybe there won’t be a season after all, all the teams will cancel before it all gets going, and the preseason top 25 is a representative snapshot of what the season was supposed to be like.

Just call it an awkward moment in this year when everyone is trying to adjust on the fly.

NEXT: Who is, technically, overrated in the AP Top 25 Poll?

Florida Gators football ranked 8th in preseason AP Top 25

The official preseason AP Top 25 Poll was released for the 2020 college football season on Monday.

Though some expected the poll to omit teams from the Pac-12, Big Ten, Mountain West and Mid-American, the four FBS leagues that have canceled the fall football season, teams from conferences that canceled were included in the rankings with an asterisk.

As a result, the Florida Gators weren’t able to sneak into the top five as some predicted, instead appearing in the initial poll ranked No. 8 in the nation.

They’re the fourth-highest ranked SEC team out of seven that appear in the top 25, behind Alabama, Georgia and LSU but ahead of Auburn, Texas A&M and Tennessee.

Oklahoma starts 2020 season No. 5 in AP Poll

For the fifth year in a row, OU will open the season within the AP Poll’s top 5. OU is set to debut at 5, coming in one vote behind Georgia

For the fifth year in a row, OU will open the season within the AP Poll’s top 5. OU is set to debut at No. 5, coming in one vote behind No. 4 Georgia.

Strangely, the poll considers all FBS teams, whether they will be playing football this fall or not. Currently, nine different ranked teams have already postponed or canceled their fall season.

OU has started the season in the top 10 18 times in the last 20 years. They began the season ranked No. 4 last year, eventually finishing 12-2 with a Big 12 Title and College Football Playoff appearance.

Especially under Lincoln Riley, OU has become no stranger to lofty preseason expectations. The high ranking is well-deserved, but don’t expect it to go to the Sooners’ heads.

With the Big Ten and Pac-12 canceling/postponing their respective seasons, what should the AP be now?

With the Big Ten and Pac-12 canceling/postponing their respective seasons, what should the AP be now?

For some reason, the AP wasn’t able to adjust and do its preseason rankings correctly – it included teams that aren’t even playing this year.

Here’s what it should be, based on schools still expected to play college football in 2020.
