Amid abuse allegations, Antony returns for Manchester United

Police investigations in Brazil and the UK are ongoing, and no charges have been filed at this point

Amid allegations of violence from three different women, Antony has returned to the Manchester United squad and will be available for selection.

United confirmed the decision in a statement released on Friday.

“Since allegations were first made in June, Antony has cooperated with police inquiries in both Brazil and the UK, and he continues to do so,” the statement read.

“As Antony’s employer, Manchester United has decided that he will resume training at Carrington, and be available for selection, while police inquiries proceed. This will be kept under review pending further developments in the case.

“As a club we condemn acts of violence and abuse. We recognize the importance of safeguarding all those involved in this situation, and acknowledge the impact these allegations have on survivors of abuse.”

United’s decision comes three weeks after announcing the 23-year-old would be taking a leave of absence from the team.

Antony’s former partner Gabriela Cavallin has made several allegations of abuse, which have since been followed by two more women making similar claims against the winger.

The Brazil international has denied all the accusations of abuse.

Police investigations in Brazil and the UK are ongoing, and Antony has not been arrested or charged at this point.

At a press conference on Friday, United manager Erik ten Hag insisted that the winger’s return while under police investigation would not be a distraction for his team.

“We make the statement so I refer to the statement, everything has been made clear in the statement,” Ten Hag said.

“No, I don’t think it’s a distraction. We will focus on the games. He will do as well. On Saturday, he will be back in training, so tomorrow. I have to see, but I think, yeah [he’s fit].”

Antony sidelined ‘until further notice’ amid abuse allegations

Three women have accused the 23-year-old of violence

Manchester United has announced that Antony will take a leave of absence from the team amid allegations of violence from three different women.

Antony’s former partner Gabriela Cavallin has made several allegations of abuse, which have since been followed by two more women making similar claims against the winger.

The 23-year-old was removed from Brazil’s squad last week after Cavallin revealed more details to UOL, including photographs and screenshots of messages.

Antony has denied all of the allegations.

“Manchester United acknowledges the allegations made against Antony,” read a club statement released on Sunday.

“Players who have not participated in international matches are due back in training on Monday. However, it has been agreed with Antony that he will delay his return until further notice in order to address the allegations.

“As a club we condemn acts of violence and abuse. We recognize the importance of safeguarding all those involved in this situation, and acknowledge the impact these allegations have on survivors of abuse.”

In his own statement, Antony added: “I have agreed with Manchester United to take a period of absence while I address the allegations made against me. This was a mutual decision to avoid distraction to my teammates and unnecessary controversy for the club. I want to reiterate my innocence of the things I have been accused of, and I will fully cooperate with the police to help them reach the truth. I look forward to returning to play as soon as possible.”

Cavallin has filed separate police complaints against Antony in Brazil and in England.

United signed Antony from Ajax last year in a deal worth an initial €95 million.

Manchester United has an Antony problem

The club hasn’t said whether they’ll allow the Brazilian to keep playing amid serious allegations

They may have stepped on a few rakes in the process, but Manchester United managed to ultimately ship Mason Greenwood out of the club. Unfortunately for the Red Devils, there is a new problem brewing with a player still very much in the picture.

Antony has been accused of assault and domestic abuse by his former girlfriend Gabriela Cavallin, who first made the charge back in June. On Monday, Cavallin revealed more details via the Brazilian outlet UOL, including photographs and screenshots of messages.

The forward was quickly dropped by Brazil after being initially called into the country’s roster for World Cup qualifiers.

“Due to the facts that became public this Monday involving Manchester United player Antony, and which need to be investigated, and in order to safeguard the alleged victim, the player, the Brazilian team and the CBF, the organization informs that the athlete has been withdrawn from the Brazilian team,” read a federation statement.

The allegations from Cavallin, which Antony has denied, are serious. They include accusations that Antony attacked her while pregnant with their child, headbutted and punched her, attempted to hit her in the face with a glass bowl, threatened to kill her, and caused damage to her breast implant that required surgery, among other allegations.

In response to Cavallin’s allegations, Antony posted a statement on social media in which he insisted the “accusations are false.”

“My relationship with Ms. Gabriela was tumultuous, with insults [made] on both sides, but never did I commit any act of physical aggression,” the 23-year-old said.

On Wednesday, Manchester United issued a statement light on details, particularly when it came to the most pertinent issue of whether they would allow the Brazilian to keep playing for the club.

“Manchester United acknowledges the allegations made against Antony and notes that the police are conducting enquiries,” the statement read. “Pending further information, the club will be making no further comments.

“As a club we are taking this matter seriously, with consideration of the impact of these allegations and subsequent reporting will have on survivors of abuse.”

Cavallin has filed separate police complaints against Antony in Brazil and in England.

United will be even further under the microscope when it comes to Antony after the club completely mishandled the situation with Greenwood.

Greenwood was arrested and suspended by United in January 2022, after a recording and images were released on social media of an alleged sexual attack. The charges of attempted rape, assault and controlling and coercive behavior eventually were dropped this February after the withdrawal of key witnesses, and new material coming to light.

As revealed by The Athletic, United was planning on bringing Greenwood back for the current season despite protests from fans and some club employees. Ultimately, the public outrage grew too strong, and Greenwood was shipped off on loan to Getafe.

United appeared to be club without a real sense of the world in which it operates. The leaked plan to bring back Greenwood produced an entirely predicable blowback which somehow seemed to catch the club off guard. Ultimately, United made the correct decision, but in a way that left nobody satisfied.

The Greenwood situation will be very much front of mind as another United player faces similarly serious allegations. United now has another unwanted opportunity to do the right thing. Time will tell if the club will take its chance.

Antony spun around a couple times and now everyone is Very Mad

Words like “embarrassing” and “ridiculous” were tossed around with reckless abandon

With just a couple twirls, Antony managed to set off something of a firestorm.

The Manchester United winger performed his signature move against Sheriff Tiraspol in the Europa League on Thursday, which was immediately followed by an errant pass that went out for a goal kick.

Many observers, including his manager Erik ten Hag, didn’t seem to be amused.

Antony was taken off at halftime of United’s eventual 3-0 win, with Ten Hag saying the following day that he wants his flair players to display equal parts fashion and function.

“I do not have a problem with that, as long as it is functional,” the manager said. “So from him, like everyone else, I demand more. More runs behind, being more often in the [opposition’s] box. More pressing. More dribbles against opponents. More playing in the pockets. We demand more dominance.

“Then there is a trick like that which is nice, but as long as it is functional and you do not lose the ball. Then it is OK. But it is a trick and because of the trick, I will correct him.”

Ten Hag may have been measured in his criticism, but Antony’s spin cycle caused several Man Utd legends to lose their minds.

Words like “embarrassing” and “ridiculous” were tossed out by Paul Scholes and others.

Antony, for his part, made a defiant post on Instagram, saying he wasn’t about to stop showing off the kind of skill that earned him a €95 million move to United.

Let’s check just a few of the reaction’s to the 720 heard round the world.

¿Vale 100 millones?

Manchester United finally signed Antony and it was very expensive

Expectations will by sky high after United paid Ajax an initial €95 million for the winger

Manchester United has finally got its man, and it was not cheap.

The Red Devils announced they have reached an agreement with Ajax for the transfer of winger Antony in a deal worth an initial €95 million, which could rise to €100m.

The Dutch side apparently managed to squeeze out an extra €5m to get the deal over the line after it rejected a €90m offer for the Brazilian last week.

That rejection prompted Antony to go public with his demands, telling Fabrizio Romano in no uncertain terms: “I want to leave.”

Expectations will be sky high for Antony, who scored 24 goals and provided 22 assists in 82 appearances for Ajax after joining from Sao Paulo in 2020.

The winger will be reunited with ex-Ajax coach Erik ten Hag, who took over United before the current season.

Under Ten Hag, United’s summer signings have taken on a Dutch theme, with Lisandro Martinez also joining from Ajax, Tyrell Malacia coming on board from Feyenoord and former Ajax playmaker Christian Eriksen also signing.

The only player to join United this summer without a connection to the Netherlands is Casemiro, who signed from Real Madrid earlier this month.

Those signings have taken United’s expenditures in the current transfer window to over £200m.

Antony is through being subtle about wanting to join Man Utd

“I’m not asking Ajax to release me, I’m asking Ajax to sell me”

Antony is ready to play hardball with Ajax.

The winger has made it clear he wants his current club to sell him to Manchester United, amid multiple reports on Friday that Ajax had rejected a €90 million offer from the Premier League side.

The Brazil international has said he’s been trying to leave the Dutch side since February and now, he’s frustrated to see his club’s sky-high valuation prevent him from moving to Old Trafford.

“Since February of this year, my agents came to Amsterdam to inform Ajax of my desire to leave the club to face a new challenge and that some interested clubs would arrive and with them, certainly a great offer,” Antony told Fabrizio Romano in an interview.

“During the window months, meetings continued and I also received a proposal from Ajax for a contract renewal. I made it clear once again: I want to leave.

“Today, in a meeting with the club, I expressed my old interest in leaving, only this time with a considerable offer on the table. Others had already arrived! Ajax refused with argument that they only have five days to replace me.

“I’m not asking Ajax to release me, I’m asking Ajax to sell me with the highest bid ever for Eredivisie player. I’ve been insisting on this theme since February so that the club could rebuild the team with peace of mind.”

It’s not clear if United will return with another improved bid for Antony, with the club also linked to PSV’s Cody Gakpo, and Chelsea’s Christian Pulisic.

Over the weekend, Ajax head coach Alfred Schreuder said he believed Antony would stay at the club — taking a shot at United failing to qualify for this year’s Champions League in the process.

“I have a good feeling about it. Of course, it’s difficult. I understand the lad,” Schreuder said.

“But he plays for Ajax, so these clubs do come knocking on the door. We are playing in the Champions League and I don’t think Manchester United are.”
