Health issues scratch Eryk Anders vs. Antonio Arroyo from tonight’s UFC Fight Night 182 lineup

Tonight’s UFC Fight Night 182 lineup is down to 10 fights.

Tonight’s UFC Fight Night 182 lineup is down to 10 fights.

A middleweight matchup between [autotag]Eryk Anders[/autotag] (13-5 MMA, 5-5 UFC) and [autotag]Antonio Arroyo[/autotag] (9-3 MMA, 0-1 UFC) has been removed from the event, which takes place a UFC Apex in Las Vegas and airs on ESPN following prelims on ESPN+, both fighters announced.

The culprit behind the cancellation appears to be Anders, who cited “health issues,” which have seemingly stemmed from his weight cut. He was 1.5 pounds over the divisional limit at Friday’s weigh-in, and he was to be fined 20 percent of his purse.

Anders’ recovery from his weight cut apparently didn’t go well, because he was forced to pull out of the card (via Twitter):

Hey guys, unfortunately due to issues concerning my health I was forced to withdraw from tonight’s fight against Arroyo. I am recovering and look forward to getting back to action ASAP. Thank you everyone for your love and support.

With the removal, the latest UFC Fight Night 182 lineup now includes:

The UFC is back on its home turf again this week with a former lightweight champion atop the bill.

UFC Fight Night 182 takes place Saturday at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. The card streams on ESPN+.

(Click here to open a PDF of the staff picks grid in a separate window.)

In the main event, former lightweight champion [autotag]Rafael dos Anjos[/autotag] (29-13 MMA, 18-11 UFC) returns to the division after a stint at welterweight to take on [autotag]Paul Felder[/autotag] (17-5 MMA, 9-5 UFC), who took the bout on just five days’ notice. Dos Anjos is a -193 favorite at BetMGM; the comeback on Felder is +160. But it’s Felder who has a big 10-4 lead in the picks from our 14 editors, writers, videographers and radio hosts.

In the co-feature, [autotag]Abdul Razak Alhassan[/autotag] (10-2 MMA, 4-2 UFC) missed weight for his welterweight bout against [autotag]Khaos Williams[/autotag] (10-1 MMA, 1-0 UFC). He’s a -250 favorite, though, and he’s a near-unanimous pick from our staff members at 13-1.

[autotag]Eryk Anders[/autotag] (13-5 MMA, 5-5 UFC) missed weight, as well, for his middleweight bout against [autotag]Antonio Arroyo[/autotag] (9-3 MMA, 0-1 UFC). Anders is a mild favorite at -125, and he has a small 8-6 lead in the picks from our staff members.

And to open the main card, [autotag]Brendan Allen[/autotag] (15-3 MMA, 3-0 UFC) takes on [autotag]Sean Strickland[/autotag] (21-3 MMA, 8-3 UFC) in a 195-pound catchweight bout. Allen is a slight favorite at -125, but it’s Strickland with an 8-6 picks lead.

In the MMA Junkie reader consensus picks, Felder (63 percent), Alhassan (58 percent), Anders (73 percent) and Allen (62 percent) are the choices.

Check out all the picks above.

Eryk Anders replaces Andreas Michailidis, faces Antonio Arroyo at UFC event on Nov. 14

The former University of Alabama football standout will step in on three weeks’ notice.

[autotag]Antonio Arroyo[/autotag] has a new opponent for his upcoming fight.

UFC middleweight [autotag]Eryk Anders[/autotag] will replace [autotag]Andreas Michailidis[/autotag] and fight Arroyo (9-3 MMA, 0-1 UFC) at the UFC’s Nov. 14 event at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas.

Multiple people with knowledge of the matchup recently informed MMA Junkie of the booking, but asked to remain anonymous since the promotion has yet to make an official announcement.

No reason was given for Michailidis’ withdrawal.

Anders (13-5 MMA, 5-5 UFC) will look to rebound from a unanimous decision loss to Krzysztof Jotko in May. Prior to that defeat, Anders had won back-to-back fights against Gerald Meerschaert and Vinicius Moreira.

Arroyo also is coming off a loss. After earning his UFC contract on Season 3 of Dana White’s Contender Series, Arroyo made his promotional debut in November 2019. He lost to fellow DWCS alum Andre Muniz by unanimous decision.

With the addition, the UFC on ESPN+ 41 lineup includes:

With Antonio Arroyo out, James Krause vs. Trevin Giles in the works for UFC 247 on a day’s notice

At UFC 247, James Krause may replace Antonio Arroyo to fight Trevin Giles in Houston on just a day’s notice.

There’s short notice and then there’s no notice.

The UFC is working on a fight that will get [autotag]James Krause[/autotag] as close as he can to a “no-notice” fight at UFC 247. After [autotag]Antonio Arroyo[/autotag] was taken to the hospital following Friday’s morning weigh-ins ahead of his scheduled fight against [autotag]Trevin Giles[/autotag] (11-2 MMA, 2-2 UFC), Krause (27-7 MMA, 8-3 UFC) volunteered to step up in his place.

Two people with knowledge of the situation informed MMA Junkie of the last-minute fight booking, which is in the works. They asked to remain anonymous since the bout is still being finalized and the promotion has yet to make an official announcement.

Krause is riding a six-fight winning streak. He most recently competed in November. Against Sergio Moraes in hostile territory, Krause put on a striking clinic en route to a third-round TKO victory.

A Houston police officer, Giles won’t miss out on a homecoming, should this bout get finalized. Instead, he’ll potentially look to snap his two-fight skid against a welterweight-turned-middleweight.

UFC 247 takes place Saturday at Toyota Center in Houston. The main card airs on pay-per-view following prelims on ESPN and early prelims on UFC Fight Pass/ESPN+.

When it comes to heartbreaking backstories and a fighting spirit forged through struggle, [autotag]Tracy Cortez[/autotag] can’t be ignored. As she proved on her entry into the UFC through Dana White’s Contender Series, she’s willing to scrap under any circumstances, traveling to Brazil to compete on foreign soil in her UFC debut and even moving up 10 pounds so she could get on the card.

On the feet, Cortez shows real promise with her striking, flashing impressive power and accuracy with her boxing against Vanessa Melo. The downside in that range was that she was available to be countered in those exchanges, in the old “take one to give one” approach doesn’t generally lead to long UFC tenures, so she’ll want to dial the in a bit. Still, her willingness to engage was certainly entertaining.

Cortez also shows a willingness to turn to the grappling when needed, spending nearly the entirety of a round of this fight in a controlling position in the clinch. While that doesn’t entertain as much as the striking, I see promise in a fighter willing to be disciplined to a gameplan when it’s effective.

Overall, I think a move back down to 125 pounds may be the right move for Cortez, and there are some defensive tactics that need to be tweaked, but it seems some promising days are ahead for this newcomer.
