Antoine Davis erupted for first career 40-point game in the G League

Antoine Davis became the 18th player in the G League this season to score at least 40 points in a game.

Rookie Antoine Davis erupted for a career performance in the G League on Thursday to lead the Rip City Remix to a victory on the road over the Wisconsin Herd.

Davis produced 41 points, four rebounds, two assists and one steal in 33 minutes in the 116-104 win. He went 15-of-28 from the field, including a career-high 9-of-17 from 3-point range, as the Remix improved to 11-8 in the regular season.

The undrafted guard from Detroit became the 18th player in the G League this season to score at least 40 points in a game. He is one of two players to reach that mark while connecting on at least nine 3s.

Davis, who finished as the second all-time scoring leader in the NCAA, played with the Portland Trail Blazers in the NBA Summer League. He was with the team during training camp before beginning the season with the Remix.

The 25-year-old is averaging 14.2 points, 2.6 rebounds and 1.8 assists on 37.6% shooting from 3-point range in 34 games with the Remix. He ranks seventh in the G League in 3s (108) and is one of nine players to hit at least nine in a game this season.

Davis established himself as one of the best scorers at the collegiate level at Detroit and has shown that ability in spurts with the Remix. He put on a show on Thursday and had one of the best-scoring performances in the G League this year.

Antoine Davis put on an absolute shooting clinic at the G League Elite Camp

Davis put on a shooting display at the G League Elite Camp and emerged as one of the top prospects in Chicago.

Over two days at the NBA G League Elite Camp, Detroit Mercy guard Antoine Davis put on a shooting display and emerged as one of the top prospects in Chicago, Illinois.

Davis started the scrimmages by producing 12 points, two rebounds, one assist and one block while going 4-of-9 from 3-point range on Saturday. He drained four 3-pointers again on Sunday en route to a 14-point performance. His eight 3s led all players across the two-day competition.

In addition to the 5-on-5 scrimmages, Davis also took part in several shooting exercises on Sunday, including off the dribble, the 3-point star drill and spot-up shooting.

He led or finished near the top in every category.

Davis was among 45 prospects invited to participate in the G League Elite Camp. The top prospects from the competition each year are invited to the draft combine, which begins on Monday, and Davis could be a candidate to stick around for the festivities.

He was named the Horizon Player of the Year after averaging 28.2 points, 3.6 assists, three rebounds and 1.2 steals on 41.2% shooting from 3-point range. He finished as the No. 2 all-time leading scorer in Division I history, just three points shy of the record (3,664).

The 6-foot-1 Davis established himself as one of the top scorers in college basketball history over his five years. He once again showed off that ability in Chicago in front of teams and scouts.

G League Elite Camp: Kansas State’s Markquis Nowell dazzled on Day 1

Kansas State guard Markquis Nowell was among the standouts from the first day of the G League Elite Camp.

The NBA G League Elite Camp tipped off on Saturday as 45 prospects hit the court to showcase their games in front of team executives, coaches and scouts in Chicago, Illinois.

The top performers are invited each year to compete in the draft combine, which begins Monday. The event has helped send several players to the NBA, including Jose Alvarado, Oshae Brissett, Kenneth Lofton Jr. and Terance Mann.

The players participated in various on-court drills, exercises and measurement testing. They were split into four teams and took part in 5-on-5 scrimmages. Several players emerged with standout performances from the first day.

Here are some of the top performers from Saturday.

Detroit Mercy’s Antoine Davis says he felt ‘cheated out of something’ after falling short of Pete Maravich’s record

Davis was frustrated that the 14-19 Titans didn’t receive a CBI bid, ending their season.

When the Detroit Mercy Titans didn’t receive a bid for the CBI postseason tournament, ending its campaign, that also meant the end of star Antoine Davis’ hopes of surpassing Pete Maravich’s all-time career scoring record as he came up just four points shy in a Horizon League tournament loss to Youngstown State.

At 14-19, it would have been fairly surprising to see the Titans get a bid, though they themselves were pushing for one. Based on Davis’ comments, he seems to have taken the snub personally.

“I’m upset about it,” Davis said per The Associated Press. “I feel like I got cheated out of something that they can’t ever give back to me. I think it’s selfish — and weird — that people emailed or called the CBI to say we shouldn’t be in the tournament because they didn’t want me to break the record.

“But there’s nothing to hold my head down about. I still feel like I’m the best scorer in my generation, especially finishing No. 2 behind him.”

Rick Giles, the president of the Gazelle Group which runs the CBI, did confirm that they received emails and voicemails asking to exclude UDM to protect Maravich’s record, though he emphasized that played no role in the decision.

The CBI is a pay-to-play tournament, and Maravich’s son Jason told the AP that he thought it would be a “terrible look” to allow Davis to break the record in a lower-tier postseason tournament on a 14-19 team.

Maravich’s all-time record is safe, and given that Davis needed five full seasons granted by COVID-19 eligibility relief to even get close, it probably will be for quite a while.

Pete Maravich’s all-time Division I scoring record is officially safe as Detroit Mercy was spurned by CBI

Maravich will hold onto his crown despite a close call this season.

Antoine Davis’ hopes of toppling “Pistol” Pete Maravich’s all-time scoring record, which has stood for more than 50 years since Maravich left LSU in 1970, have officially ended.

The Detroit Mercy standout finishes his college career just four points shy of surpassing Maravich’s record after the Titans didn’t receive an invite to the CBI, officially ending their season.

Davis entered DMU’s Horizon League quarterfinal matchup against Youngstown State needing 26 points to pass Maravich on the all-time scoring list, and he finished with 22 in a loss for the Titans.

Even if Davis had broken Maravich’s record, it’s hard to draw a one-to-one comparison between the two. Davis played five seasons compared to Maravich’s three (freshmen weren’t permitted to play on the varsity team at the time) and the latter played prior to the advent of the three-point line or shot clock.

No one will ever match Maravich’s career, in which he averaged 44.3 points per game — an unbreakable Division I record — and he’ll also be holding onto his all-time scoring record for the foreseeable future.

Pete Maravich’s all-time scoring record survives as Detroit Mercy’s Antoine Davis falls short in (potentially) his final game

Davis missed a three in the final seconds that would have tied Maravich’s record.

Pete Maravich’s all-time scoring record, which has stood since 1970, remains intact.

Detroit Mercy’s Antoine Davis mounted quite a challenge to the record this season, and he entered Thursday’s Horizon League Tournament game against Youngstown State just 26 points away from surpassing Maravich’s Division I career scoring record of 3,667 points.

However, Davis finished with 22 points as he battled a shoulder injury, and a three-pointer in the final seconds that would have tied the record came up short in a 71-66 loss that may have ended the Titans’ season and Davis’ career.

Maravich’s record isn’t necessarily safe for good. Detroit Mercy is in contention for a CBI bid, which would give Davis an extra game and an excellent chance of breaking the record. At 14-19 overall with a 9-11 record in league play, an invite is far from guaranteed.

Even then, the Titans would have to pay a $27,500 entrance fee, which isn’t exactly pocket change for a low mid-major program.

Time will tell if Maravich’s record is safe for good. Regardless, it’s worth noting a few things that make his achievement during his playing career even more impressive.

Freshmen were not allowed to play on the varsity team at that time, so Maravich only played three seasons compared to Davis’ four. Maravich also accomplished this feat in the days prior to the invention of the shot clock and three-point line.

Maravich averaged more than 44 points per game over his entire career, a record that will almost certainly never be contested. His college career was one of one, and his all-time scoring record is safe — for now, at least.

Meet Antoine Davis, the college standout on the cusp of breaking records held by Pete Maravich and Stephen Curry

If you haven’t heard of college standout basketball Antoine Davis, you’re not alone. But for basketball fans, it’s clearly time to start brushing up. Davis is on the cusp of breaking one of the most unbreakable records of all time: Pistol Pete Maravich’s all-time NCAA scoring record. Maravich tallied 3,667 points in his three-year career at LSU in the late 1960s.

As of today, Davis, a senior at the University of Detroit, is 124 points away with two regular season games left and (at least) one Horizon League tournament games after that. Today is Senior Night for his Detroit Mercy squad and after the game, Davis will have his jersey retired by the school—a big and rare honor. Going into the game, Davis is also 22 three-pointers away from Stephen Curry’s single-season NCAA record.

For many, this would be a blur, even an impossible task to complete. But Davis, the son of a coach, Mike Davis, formerly of Indiana University (first an assistant under Bob Knight and then as the school’s head coach from 2000 to 2006) and then University of Alabama at Birmingham from 2006 to 2012 and then Texas Southern University from 2012 to 2018 before taking over at Detroit, poise isn’t a problem. For the 24-year-old Davis, the sky is the limit.

Davis, who was the first freshman to be named to the First Team All-Horizon League team since Gordon Hayward, has broken scoring records, shooting records and has put the University of Detroit, a school formerly coached by Dick Vitale, back on the map in a major way. Here, below, we caught up with the star collegiate player to ask him about his roots, his style, LeBron James and which NBA player he patterns his game after.

MSU Basketball vs. Detroit Mercy: Where to Watch, Game Preview & Prediction

Check out the game details, keys to the match-up, and my game prediction in this Michigan State-Detroit Mercy preview.

For the first time in nearly 20 years, Michigan State and Detroit Mercy will tangle on the hardwood in a non-conference match-up on Friday night. Tip-off from the Breslin Center is scheduled for 5 p.m. EST.

MSU enters this in-state battle coming off an impressive road victory over No. 6 Duke earlier this week. The Spartans are a perfect 3-0 on the season.

Detroit Mercy will be making their first appearance of the season after having to deal with a positive COVID-19 test that resulted in the cancellation of numerous games.

Let’s take a look at this match-up against the Titans, with game details, things to watch, and last but not least my prediction for this game.

3 shooters in 2021 NBA Draft that Philadelphia 76ers should focus on

We look at 3 shooters that the Philadelphia 76ers should focus on for the 2021 NBA Draft.

The Philadelphia 76ers have a lot of business to take care of at this current moment in time. As the NBA continues to move towards a resumption in the middle of July in Orlando as the “bubble site”, they also have to worry about a temporary draft process for 2020 and what promises to be a rapid-fire free agency process.

However, just in case they are not able to fill their needs in the 2020 draft–shooting–the Sixers can look ahead to the 2021 draft and find a shooter at the end of Round 1.

In this edition, we are going to take a look at the early 2021 big board done by Bryan Kalbrosky over at our sister site, Rookie Wire, and look at a few shooters the draft possesses.
