Ravens associate head coach/DL coach Anthony Weaver interviews with Commanders

Coaching interviews begin for the Commanders.

The Washington Commanders appear close to finding a new head of football operations. On Thursday, several outlets reported the Commanders had narrowed their choices to 49ers assistant GM Adam Peters and Bears assistant GM Ian Cunningham.

While Washington looks to wrap up its head of football operations/GM search soon, it began the first round of interviews for the head coaching position on Thursday.

According to Ben Standig of The Athletic, Baltimore Ravens associate head coach/defensive line coach Anthony Weaver wrapped up his virtual interview with the Commanders.

The Commanders requested permission to interview Weaver and Ravens defensive coordinator Mike MacDonald earlier this week. It’s believed that MacDonald also interviewed with Washington, but not confirmed. At least five of the eight teams with coaching vacancies have requested permission to interview MacDonald.

Only coaches with a bye week in the NFL wild-card round were allowed to interview virtually this week. That means the San Francisco 49ers and the Ravens.

For teams that have coaches in the wild-card round this weekend, they can begin interviewing virtually next week — three days after the conclusion of their games.

In-person interviews can begin after the divisional round of the NFL playoffs.

Weaver, 43, was a second-round pick of the Ravens in 2003. He played seven seasons in the NFL and began his coaching career in 2010 as a graduate assistant at Florida. He moved to the NFL in 2012 as an assistant defensive line coach for the New York Jets. After stints with the Bills and Browns as the defensive line coach, Weaver returned to Houston in 2016, where he spent five seasons as the defensive line coach.

He joined Baltimore in 2021 and is viewed as a potential future head coach.

The Washington Commanders fired Ron Rivera on Monday after four seasons. Owner Josh Harris immediately announced he had formed an advisory committee consisting of minority owners David Blitzer, Magic Johnson, Mitch Rales, former Golden State Warriors GM Bob Myers, former Minnesota Vikings GM Rick Speilman, and himself.

Harris made it clear during his press conference on Monday that the head of football operations/GM would be a separate role from the head coach. Rivera had served both roles during his time in Washington.

Shortly after Harris announced Rivera’s dismissal, the Commanders requested permission to speak with head coaching candidates.

6 candidates to be the Jaguars’ next defensive coordinator

There are a few intriguing names who could get a call about the Jaguars’ defensive coordinator vacancy.

The Jacksonville Jaguars are starting over on defense. On Monday, the team fired defensive coordinator Mike Caldwell and just about every other defensive coach on the team’s staff.

As the team begins its hunt for a new face to lead the way, there’s plenty of reason to believe it’ll be a relatively attractive opening for coaching candidates.

For one, no pass rushing tandem finished with more sacks than the 27.5 that Josh Allen and Travon Walker combined for in 2023. While Allen, who led the way with 17.5 sacks, is scheduled to became a free agent, it’d be a surprise if the Jaguars didn’t use the franchise tag, at the very least, to keep him on the roster.

After that, it largely depends on what you think of young players like cornerback Tyson Campbell, safety Andre Cisco, and linebacker Devin Lloyd who have all shown great things at times, but have struggled with consistency early in their careers.

Here are six coaches who could draw the Jaguars’ eye as they try to fill their defensive coordinator void and turn their young defense into one of the NFL’s best units:

Former Notre Dame defender interviewing for NFL head coach opening

Could he be an NFL head coach soon?

Former Notre Dame defensive end Anthony Weaver is being targeted as a candidate to fill an NFL head coach vacancy.  According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Washington Commanders have requested permission to interview the Baltimore Ravens associate head coach and defensive line coach.

This comes just hours after the Commanders parted ways with head coach Ron Rivera.

Weaver played at Notre Dame where he was part of their 2000 team that went to the Fiesta Bowl.  He was drafted in the second round of the 2002 NFL draft by the Ravens and spent seven years playing in the league between the Ravens and Houston Texans.

Weaver began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Florida in 2010.  In 2012 he took a job with the New York Jets and has been coaching defense in the league ever since with his most recent stop being in Baltimore where he has spent the last three seasons.

We’ll be sure to keep an eye on any happenings in regards to the former Notre Dame star.

Commanders requested permission to interview Ravens assistant Anthony Weaver for HC Job

The Washington Commanders requested permission to interview Baltimore Ravens assistant coach Anthony Weaver for their vacant head coaching job

Washington will have the No. 2 overall pick in April’s NFL draft and a new head coach after firing Ron Rivera on Monday morning.

Commanders owner Josh Harris has hired two prominent executives — former Golden State Warriors general manager Bob Myers and former Minnesota Vikings GM Rick Spielman — to assist his ownership group with searches for a new head of football operations and head coach, team officials told ESPN.

The team finished this season at 4-13 and last in the NFC East, and it went 26-40-1 in his four seasons on the job.

Finding a new coach and GM has begun, and Ravens defensive line coach Anthony Weaver is on the list.

Weaver joined the Ravens staff in 2021 after previously coaching with the Texans, Browns, Bills, and Jets, following a seven-year NFL career spent with Houston and Baltimore.

Weaver played for the Texans and Ravens during his seven years as an NFL pass rusher.

Washington can’t have in-person interviews with coaches currently employed by other teams until after the divisional round of the playoffs.

The Commanders could have a virtual interview with Weaver this week.

Ravens assistant HC Anthony Weaver has high praise for rookie LB Tavius Robinson

Anthony Weaver says Baltimore Ravens linebacker Tavius Robinson works hard to do everything right

Tavius Robinson entered the NFL as a potential role player who could develop into a talented pass rusher and standout rotational piece.

The Ravens drafted the former Ole Miss standout in the fourth round of the 2023 NFL draft, and he landed on a roster full of developing talent, with edge rushers like David Ojabo, Odafe Oweh, and newly signed star Jadeveon Clowney.

Robinson has seen his snap counts rise during his rookie season, and defensive line coach Anthony Weaver had this to say about the developing pass rusher.

Robinson has 17 tackles, two tackles for loss, 7 QB hurries, 8 QB pressures, and 1 QB hit on 255 total defensive snaps played.

Ravens defensive line coach explains why Jadeveon Clowney has been so impactful

Anthony Weaver says Jadeveon Clowney has made huge impact with Ravens

Jadeveon Clowney has always been an elite pass rusher, but he seems to have finally put the total package together during his stint with Baltimore.

During a recent session with the media, former Ravens great and current defensive line coach Anthony Weaver talked about Clowney’s impact on the defense and why he’s playing so well.

“There’s nobody in this building, probably except Lamar Jackson, who’s had as much pressure as Jadeveon Clowney [has],” Ravens Outside Linebackers Coach Chuck Smith said Tuesday. “The difference in Jadeveon Clowney in other places, is that he’s developed a skill move. But also, add in, he has the complementary pieces around him that he’s not Jadeveon Clowney, the first-round pick, the No. 1 guy.”

Fifteen Baltimore defenders have recorded at least a half-sack, and Mike MacDonald’s defense has six defenders with three or more sacks.

Clowney ranks second on the team with 7.5 and is on pace for double-digit sacks while being among the NFL’s leaders in quarterback pressures.

Ravens DL coach Anthony Weaver shares thoughts on DL Michael Pierce

Ravens defensive line coach Anthony Weaver discussed DL Michael Pierce

The Baltimore Ravens have been working hard at 2022 training camp to put the disappointing end to their 2021 season behind them. They’ve seen many different players stand out, and some of their new additions have impressed the coaching staff as they get acclimated to their new (or in some cases former) team.

Defensive line coach Anthony Weaver spoke about defensive lineman Michael Pierce after a training camp practice, praising the veteran. He said that he’s a “mountain of a man”, raving about how he’s happy to have him on the team and thrilled he’s in Baltimore with the team.

“Michael Pierce is a mountain of a man. The thing about him – when he puts his hands on you, you can’t help but feel them. Even when I’m doing individual drills, I feel like I’m fighting a bear. _(laughter)So, he’s certainly going to help our team. When you think of him, you think it’s just run defense, but the effect that he has on the middle of the pocket, and making that quarterback throw out of a well, is going to help our edges, too. So, happy he’s here, thrilled to have him. Love him, love him to death.”

Having Pierce back in the organization is good news for the Ravens’ defense. The defensive lineman spent the first four years of his career in Baltimore before signing a three-year deal with the Minnesota Vikings. Pierce will likely be asked to replicate the production that former Ravens defensive lineman Brandon Williams left behind, and also be able to rush the passer from the interior.

Ravens promote DL coach Anthony Weaver to assistant head coach

The Ravens promoted defensive line coach Anthony Weaver to associate head coach

The Baltimore Ravens have been busy on the coaching front during the 2022 offseason, as they’ve maneuvered through parting ways with coaches, seeing others leave, and bringing in replacements. However, they’re also doing some promoting, as was the case on Wednesday with defensive line coach Anthony Weaver.

The former player and current coach was promoted to assistant head coach/defensive line coach, showing the trust that the team has in him. Weaver is highly respected within the organization, and is considered an up-and-coming coach.

Weaver was drafted in the second round of the 2002 draft by Baltimore, and played the first four seasons of his career with the franchise, accumulating 144 total tackles and 14.5 sacks. He would spend three more years in the NFL with the Houston Texans before his career ended in 2008. He also has a plethora of coaching experience, including being the defensive coordinator of the Texans in 2020.

3 names emerge as Vikings defensive coordinator candidates

3 potential DC candidates have emerged for the Vikings.

The Minnesota Vikings are moving on filling their defensive coordinator position, and there are some intriguing names emerging as potential candidates for the job.

NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero is reporting the team has put in a request to interview Detroit Lions defensive backs coach/passing game coordinator Aubrey Pleasant, who worked with soon-to-be hired head coach Kevin O’Connell last year with the Los Angeles Rams.

Former Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator Don “Wink” Martindale has reportedly also “had discussions” with the Vikings, per The Athletic’s Jeff Zrebiec. Martindale served as the defensive coordinator for the last four seasons in Baltimore, and he has already been interviewed twice by the New York Giants. So there’s clearly interest in his experience with that job.

And according to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, Ravens defensive line coach and run game coordinator Anthony Weaver is also coming up in conversations as someone that could get a look. Like Pleasant, there’s a connection with O’Connell when Weaver was in Cleveland back in 2015.

A new defensive coordinator being named would officially bring an end to the father-son shindig in Minnesota with co-defensive coordinator/linebackers coach Adam Zimmer and former head coach Mike Zimmer.

It would also potentially put co-defensive coordinator/defensive line coach Andre Patterson on the outs as well.

The Vikings were in need of a serious facelift, and they’re getting a makeover the likes of which fans haven’t seen in years.
