2021 PFL 6 results: Raush Manfio wins split decision, ending Anthony Pettis’ season

The co-main event of 2021 PFL 6 had lightweight division playoff implications as Anthony Pettis took on Raush Manfio.

[autotag]Raush Manfio[/autotag] secured his spot in the 2021 PFL playoffs, while sending [autotag]Anthony Pettis[/autotag] home.

Pettis (24-12) dropped his PFL debut against Clay Collard by unanimous decision at 2021 PFL 1 in April, putting one of the biggest newcomers to the promotion in jeopardy to earn a spot in the playoffs. Manfio (13-3) won a split decision over Joilton Lutterbach that same evening, earning three points in the lightweight standings.

In order to guarantee a spot in the playoffs, Pettis needed to finish Manfio, although a decision win would have kept his hopes alive. Unfortunately for him, Manfio did not allow either to take place, leaving the former UFC champion with zero points.

2021 PFL 6 took place at Ocean Casino Resort in Atlantic City, N.J. The main card aired on ESPN2 following prelims on ESPN+.

Pettis displayed sharp striking early in the first round. Manfio was content to stay patient and find a read on his opponent’s movements before letting his hands go, as he landed a nice counter combination. Pettis continued to circle on the outside while darting in to land quick punches as Manfio tried to land counter strikes.

Both men came out quickly in the second round as they traded strikes. A low blow caught Pettis prompting a brief pause in the action for recovery. When the action resumed, Pettis began focusing on landing leg kicks while Manfio maintained the center of the cage. Pettis began landing punches upstairs as well, but Manfio answered with a few counters of his own.

Another low blow landed on Pettis after a front kick, causing another brief pause. The action resumed with a couple of exchanges before the round ended.

The third round began similar to the second with both men landing strikes, but Manfio landed a clean combination on Pettis which clearly hurt him, leading to the biggest moment of the fight.

Manfio caused Pettis to fall to the canvas briefly, and just as he returned to his feet, Manfio landed a hard knee that sent him back down.

Manfio searched for the finish, but Pettis was able to survive the moment. The remainder of the round was spent with Pettis circling on the outside until heated exchanges before the round expired.

The judges were split in their decision, with two turning in scores of 29-28 in favor of Manfio, while the dissenting judges scored the bout 29-28 in favor of Pettis.

Manfio advances to the lightweight playoffs with the split decision victory, while Pettis’ 2021 season ends without recording any points in the standings.

(Editor’s note: Updated after Anthony Pettis was removed from his fight against Alex Martinez on the main card, and Clay Collard vs. Joilton Lutterbach was moved into that position.)

In the co-feature, with former UFC and WEC lightweight champ Anthony Pettis (24-11) out of his fight against Alex Martinez (8-0) due to illness, the lightweight bout between [autotag]Clay Collard[/autotag] (19-8) and [autotag]Joilton Lutterbach[/autotag] (34-9) moved up from the prelims. Collard is a -225 betting favorite and a unanimous pick from our staff members.

Also on the main card, [autotag]Bubba Jenkins[/autotag] (15-4) is our third unanimous pick in his featherweight regular season fight against [autotag]Bobby Moffett[/autotag] (13-5). Jenkins is a -275 favorite in the fight.

UFC 263 free fight: Nate Diaz goes to battle with Anthony Pettis

Two of MMA’s most crowd-pleasing athletes met up for a highly anticipated affair, and Nate Diaz and Anthony Pettis did not disappoint.

Two of MMA’s most crowd-pleasing athletes came together in August 2019 for a highly anticipated affair, and [autotag]Nate Diaz[/autotag] and [autotag]Anthony Pettis[/autotag] did not disappoint.

At UFC 241, Diaz drew ex-champ Pettis into a grueling, in-close fight as he looked to drag the action into deep waters. Pettis managed to survive to the final bell, but Diaz’s offensive output was too much to overcome when the fight went to the scorecards.

The final tally was 30-27, 30-27 and 29-28 for Diaz, who was fighting for the first time since a decision loss to Conor McGregor in 2016.

Diaz (20-12 MMA, 15-10 UFC) returns to action at next week’s UFC 263, where he takes on top welterweight contender Leon Edwards (18-3 MMA, 10-2 UFC) in a five-round non-title fight. Ahead of that clash, relive one of the many storied battles of Diaz’s career in the video above.

PFL 4 also will feature the MMA debut of boxing champion Claressa Shields.

In the co-main event, [autotag]Bubba Jenkins[/autotag] (15-4) looks to continue his momentum after an upset win over Lance Palmer last time out. He’ll take on [autotag]Anthony Dizy[/autotag] (13-4) at featherweight.

The four-fight main card will be rounded out by popular U.K.-based fighter [autotag]Brendan Loughnane[/autotag] (20-3) taking on [autotag]Tyler Diamond[/autotag] (12-1), and the MMA debut of boxing champion [autotag]Claressa Shields[/autotag], who was previously announced to meet Brittney Elkin in a non-regular season matchup.

On the prelims, [autotag]Clay Collard[/autotag] (19-8), who defeated Pettis in their first regular-season matchup, fights [autotag]Joilton Lutterbach[/autotag] (34-9). Additionally, 2019 PFL lightweight champion Natan Schulte (20-4-1) looks to rebound against [autotag]Mikhail Odintsov[/autotag] (18-3) and 2019 PFL featherweight champion [autotag]Lance Palmer[/autotag] (22-4) fights [autotag]Lazar Stojadinovic[/autotag] (14-8).

Upsets galore at 2021 PFL 1, but season format doesn’t close door on the defeated

Underdogs cashed in three of the four main card fights at 2021 PFL 1, but the defeated aren’t out of it yet.

Upset, upset, upset.

Underdogs cashed in three of the four main card fights Friday at 2021 PFL 1 against three of the promotion’s most notable names.

First, it was seasoned MMA veteran [autotag]Bubba Jenkins[/autotag], who pulled off an improbable unanimous decision victory over two-time featherweight champion [autotag]Lance Palmer[/autotag] in the main card opener.

Two fights later, two-time lightweight champion [autotag]Natan Schulte[/autotag] added a loss to his resume for the first time since 2017 when he was defeated via unanimous decision by former Bellator and UFC fighter [autotag]Marcin Held[/autotag].

“Next time, you can’t expect that I will only go to the ground and try to finish the fight on the ground,” Held said at the post-fight news conference. “I can punch. I can win in the striking. I can win on the ground. I’m a complete MMA fighter. I hope I showed that I’m one of the best fighters in this division here in PFL.”

The main event continued the theme when 2020 breakthrough boxing star [autotag]Clay Collard[/autotag] spoiled the promotional debut of former UFC lightweight champion [autotag]Anthony Pettis[/autotag]. Collard pummeled Pettis in the first two rounds before he survived a late onslaught to notch the unanimous decision win.

“Those are the kind of guys we’ve been chasing since we started this,” Collard said at the post-fight news conference. “He was a (WEC) champion and a UFC champion. It’s a dream come true. To get a win over a guy like that, I think says a lot in this division. I think it made a statement and that’s what I came here to do is make a statement and let everybody know. This is my coming-out party.”

[lawrence-related id=605643,605621,605590]

The celebration is warranted, but only transpires for so long. In the PFL format, victories aren’t measured by momentum, buzz, or card placement. Despite the three wins being high-magnitude victories over big names, the points remain the same. PFL is perhaps the most open field in mixed martial arts. A single loss is a big blow, but the defeated aren’t damned.

“(Brendan Loughnane) was awarded six points tonight,” PFL senior vice president of corporate communications Loren Mack said at the post-fight news conference. “He is the man to beat in this division now (with) six points. The rest of the points that were allocated were three points for the winners, for everybody that won tonight, and zero points for everybody else. The opportunities are still there for the fighters who lost to advance and get to the playoffs, but their backs are against the wall.”

The format makes PFL unique in the MMA space. Not only does it, in theory, play into fighters’ aggression and urgency, but it also winds into the psyche of the competitors having to fight the same opponents multiple times. For example, Jenkins expects Palmer to come back with a vengeance for a rematch that in his estimation is very likely.

“(Palmer) being a two-time champion and such a formidable opponent and such a great athlete for the last five or six years associated with these people and associated with this organization,” Jenkins said at the post-fight news conference. “We figured that after we take this dub, he was going to come back and we’d see him later in the tournament. We knew that after the dub, he’s going to have some people to come back for.”

The promotion returns Friday, April 29 with 2021 PFL 2, which features the welterweight and light heavyweight divisions. The card is headlined by former UFC welterweight title challenger and former Bellator welterweight champion Rory MacDonald as he takes on Curtis Millender.

Clay Collard batters Anthony Pettis, survives late onslaught to win decision at 2021 PFL 1

A breakthrough boxer in 2020, Clay Collard carried his success into his MMA return.

A breakthrough boxer in 2020, [autotag]Clay Collard[/autotag] carried his recent combat sports momentum into his MMA return Friday at 2021 PFL 1.

Friday, Collard (19-8) upset former UFC lightweight champion [autotag]Anthony Pettis[/autotag] (24-11) with a unanimous decision (29-27, 29-27, 29-28) victory. The judges’ scorecards came after Collard battered Pettis for the majority of three rounds.

After a successful first round, Collard turned in a dominant Round 2, in which he dropped and nearly finished Pettis with punches on multiple occasions. Somewhere in the madness, Collard appeared to injure his hand, which limited his weapons for the remainder of the fight.

Regardless of his banged-up hand, Collard found success with his striking early in Round 3. As the final half-round wound down, Pettis turned the tables. He landed a nasty head kick, followed by a jumping knee. Both blows snapped Collard’s head back, but “Cassius” survived. Collard grabbed hold of Pettis’ leg, pulled his opponent into guard, and survived until the final buzzer.

With the win, Collard extends his MMA winning streak to three. Meanwhile, Pettis has now lost three of five. Friday’s fight was Pettis’ first non-UFC or WEC bout since 2008.

Check out some highlights of Collard vs. Pettis in the clips below:
