Requirements of Chargers’ next head coach described

Change is coming for the Los Angeles Chargers.

The Chargers won’t be so quick to hire someone to fill the head coaching vacancy.

According to NFL Media’s Jim Trotter, Los Angeles is expected to interview 10-12 candidates for their head coach job.

Trotter notes that owner Dean Spanos will be more involved in the hiring process. When Lynn was hired in 2017, he allowed his son, John and general manager Tom Telesco to oversee it while he was dealing with stadium situation.

The composition of the staff will be a vital factor with whoever they are set to hire. When Lynn was onboard, an issue was loyalty to his staff. He saw problems but was slow to make needed changes.

For example, the special teams unit was an ongoing problem dating back to the beginning of the 2020 season and Lynn didn’t make the personnel change of demoting coordinator George Stewart until the end of November.

L.A. will be looking for someone to continue to develop rookie sensation Justin Herbert. Along with that, the initial focus will be on someone who can oversee the team, not just one side of the ball or the other.

Chargers next head coach odds: Brian Daboll the favorite

Offensive minded coaches are leading the pack.

The Chargers fired Anthony Lynn on Monday.

With Lynn gone, all attention has shifted to who will take over as the permanent head coach.

Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll (+250) and Panthers offensive coordinator Joe Brady (+300) are the odds on favorite followed by Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy (+700) and Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels (+700), according to sportsbetting.ag

Below is the rest of the list:

Los Angeles boasts the most appealing head coaching vacancy due to the outstanding rookie quarterback Justin Herbert and the slew of talent around him.

Daboll is the current favorite because he has helped develop Buffalo QB Josh Allen into one of the top quarterbacks in the NFL and an MVP candidate in only Year 3 of his professional career.

Allen tallied 46 touchdowns this season and nearly 5,000 all purpose yards, setting franchise records for passing yards and touchdowns by a Bills quarterback in a single season.

Buffalo finished the regular season with the No. 2 overall offense in the NFL, averaging 396 yards per game and were the second-ranked scoring offense in the league, boasting 31.8 points per game.

Report: Raiders request interview with Gus Bradley

The Chargers’ AFC West rival is attempting to lure in Gus Bradley.

The departure of coach Anthony Lynn means that the majority of the coaching staff is likely to follow, too.

NFL teams are wasting no time in attempt to acquire some of the members on the staff.

According to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport, the Raiders have requested to interview Gus Bradley for their defensive coordinator vacancy.

Las Vegas’ demand for Bradley comes as no surprise. He served as head coach Jon Gruden’s linebackers coach from 2006-08 during their time with the Buccaneers.

Hired by Los Angeles back in 2017, Bradley was coveted for his revelation of the Seahawks’ “Legion of Boom,” a defense that wreaked havoc in the league.

Bradley had success in his first two seasons. However, he was unable to match that the last two seasons. Injuries occurred to key defenders, but he was unable to make adjustments, especially in crucial situations.

Twitter reacts to firing of Anthony Lynn

Here’s how Chargers fans and the rest of the general population reacted to the news of Anthony Lynn being fired.

The Chargers fired coach Anthony Lynn on Monday.

Lynn ends his four-year stint with the Bolts with a 33-31 regular-season record and 1-1 in the playoffs. He led Los Angeles to a 12-4 record and a playoff victory in 2018, but he was unable to carry that success, going 5-11 in 2019 and under .500 in 2020.

Chargers fire coach Anthony Lynn

The Chargers will have a new head coach in 2021.

The Chargers parted ways with head coach Anthony Lynn on Monday morning.

Two seasons ago, Lynn led Los Angeles to a 12-4 record and a trip to the playoffs. In the past two seasons, the team combined to win only 12 games, losing a large number of close games both times.

L.A. managed to win their final four games of the 2020 season, but the poor game management and decision-making that cost the team many of those close contests outweighed all, which led to the decision to fire Lynn.

Below is the official team statement from owner Dean Spanos:

Chargers QB Justin Herbert closes out rookie season with a bang

The sky is the limit for Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert.

39. That’s the number of passing yards that quarterback Justin Herbert was shy of from breaking the rookie record held by Andrew Luck (4,336).

While Herbert did not surpass Luck, he still managed to set a few prestigious records in the season finale of what should be considered one of the best campaigns by a first-year signal-caller in NFL history.

Herbert became the youngest quarterback in league history to throw 30 touchdown passes in a single season. Herbert, who did it at 22 years and 299 days old, broke Lamar Jackson’s record, who threw for 30 touchdowns at 22 years and 339 days old.

He also passed Carson Wentz’s rookie record of 379 completions in a season. He had four total touchdowns to give him 36 this season, passing Cam Newton’s record. Herbert now possesses the most rushing touchdowns in a single season by a Chargers quarterback in franchise history with five.

Along with that, Herbert set the rookie record for most games with at least 300 passing yards (8), most games with at least two touchdown passes (10) and most games with at least three touchdown passes (6).

On the day, Herbert threw for 302 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions in Los Angeles’ 38-21 victory over Kansas City. He finished the year with 4,336 yards, 31 touchdown passes and 10 interceptions in 15 games.

Not too shabby for a quarterback that wasn’t expected to play much in his first season. The sky is the limit for the former Oregon product, especially if the Bolts get a new head coach that’s capable of maximizing Herbert’s potential.

Report: Chargers expected to fire HC Anthony Lynn

After four seasons, Anthony Lynn’s time with the Chargers is coming to an end.

Anthony Lynn’s time with the Chargers could be coming to an end.

According to Jay Glazer of Fox Sports, Los Angeles is expected to fire Lynn. He will meet with ownership on Monday, but it is believed that he will be let go of.

Hired in 2017, Lynn’s first two seasons were trending in a positive direction, as he led the Bolts to a 12-4 record and a trip to the playoffs in his second season.

However, the last two seasons have been underwhelming. The Chargers have a combined 11 wins over that timeframe. Injuries have a played a factor, but Lynn’s poor game management and strategy in crucial situations have held them back, too.

It remains to be seen who the next head coach will be if and when Lynn is relieved, but I would assume that it could be someone that’s capable of maximizing soon-to-be Offensive Rookie of the Year Justin Herbert’s potential.

Prediction for matchup between Chargers, Chiefs in Week 17

Chargers Wire’s Gavino Borquez makes his prediction for the Week 17 matchup.

The Los Angeles Chargers are set to face off against the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday, Jan. 3 at 1:25 p.m. PT at Arrowhead Stadium.

The Chargers are looking to secure their fourth consecutive victory with the hopes of carrying momentum into next season. Meanwhile, the Chiefs are using this game for backups to prove themselves to the coaching staff since the majority of their starters will be out.

Quarterback Justin Herbert will look to get revenge after giving he could the first time out. Herbert has thrown for 4,034 yards with 28 touchdowns, setting an NFL rookie record for TD passes in a season. He’s also set a rookie record with seven 300-yard passing games, and he needs 340 yards passing to break Andrew Luck’s rookie record of 4,374 yards.

On the other side, QB Chad Henne will make his first start since Week 2 of the 2014 season when he was with the Jaguars. Henne will be without key skill players like Tyreek Hill and Sammy Watkins. However, he will likely benefit from coach Andy Reid calling the plays.

For Los Angeles, they want to snap a losing streak to Kansas City that’s currently at 10 games. Plus, some players and coaches, including Anthony Lynn, are looking to make a statement with their jobs on the line. For the Chiefs, they want to go 15-1 for the first time in franchise history.

Even though Kansas City will be resting their starters, it would be in typical L.A. fashion to lose this one due to poor game management, solidifying Lynn’s fate.

I expect Herbert to have a great game, not one where he surpasses Luck’s yardage record, but he will put up points. Kicker Harrison Butker hits the game-winning field goal to seal the deal.

I’ve got the Chiefs beating the Chargers by the score of 27-24.

Chargers’ Gus Bradley not thinking about future as job status looms

Gus Bradley’s job could also be on the line.

We will know what the future holds for head coach Anthony Lynn in the coming days. But others on the staff could be on the chopping block if Lynn is on his way out, including defensive coordinator Gus Bradley.

Asked about his future at Thursday’s media availability, Bradley was noncommittal, saying that he tries not to think about whether he’s back with the team next year.

However, Bradly said he’s excited to see what a healthy Chargers team can do: “I think the future is very bright for this defense.”

Los Angeles has played this entire season without key defenders like safety Derwin James and linebacker Drue Tranquill. Along the way, injuries hindered others edge defenders Joey Bosa, Melvin Ingram and cornerbacks Chris Harris Jr. and Casey Hayward.

Hired back in 2017, the same year that Lynn was brought on, Bradley was coveted for his revelation of the Seahawks’ “Legion of Boom,” a defense that wreaked havoc in the league.

Under Bradley, Los Angeles has ranked among the best defenses in the league, statistically. However, opposing offenses have figured out how to exploit his notorious Cover 3 scheme, especially in crucial moments of games.

L.A. has struggled to generate consistent pressure on the quarterback as well as create turnovers the past two years.
