The Cornhuskers and the Eagles are squaring off for the first time ever. Georgia Southern is a member of the Sun Belt Conference after making the jump from FCS to FBS in 2014.

Last week, the Huskers were knotted up at 17 against North Dakota, an FCS member, before reeling off 21 straight points in the second half for a victory. Running back Anthony Grant helped solidify his status in the backfield with 23 carries for 189 yards and two touchdowns, earning Co-Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week honors for his efforts. Fellow tailback Ajay Allen tallied 60 yards and 11 carries and a score. The Huskers have played Sun Belt opponents 17 times and won 15 of those games.

In their first game under new head coach Clay Helton, Georgia Southern won in convincing fashion over Morgan St., 59-7. The Eagles put up over 500 yards of offense. Last season, Georgia Southern went 3-9 and the program is 0-2 all-time against Big Ten foes.

Big Ten Week 1: Players of the Week

Big Ten Players of the Week #B1G

Week 1 of the college football season is almost in the books as there is only one game left, but all of the Big Ten have completed their contests and the conference has announced its players of the week. It appears that the Big Ten couldn’t decide who should take home the honor of offensive players of the week for the second week in a row and have instead announced co-offensive players of the week.

Among the schools that were represented, were the Nebraska Huskers, Penn State Nittany Lions, Michigan State Spartans, Iowa Hawkeyes, and the Maryland Terrapins.

Grant named Big Ten co-Offensive Player of the Week

The Husker running back does something a Nebraska player hasn’t done since 2018.

Nebraska running back Anthony Grant was named the ‘Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week on Monday afternoon. The Junior ran 23 times for 189 yards and two touchdowns in the Cornhuskers’ 38-17 win over North Dakota on Saturday. He shares this week’s honor with Penn State Quarterback Sean Clifford.

Grant is the first Husker to win Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week since Devine Ozigbo during the 2018 season. He transferred to Nebraska from the New Mexico Military Institute, where he ran for 2,549 yards and 28 touchdowns for two seasons, averaging 7.1 yards per carry. Grant was also named the 2021 NJCAA Male Student-Athlete of the Year and the Division I Offensive Player of the Year.

Offensive/Defensive Players of the Week from Nebraska’s Win Over North Dakota

Here are the Offensive/Defensive Players of the Week from Nebraska’s win over North Dakota

On September 3, the Nebraska Cornhuskers secured their first victory of the season against the North Dakota Fighting Hawks 38-17.

Despite the final score, this was a close game. At halftime, the game was tied 7-7, and North Dakota’s offense was able to enjoy sustained drives against Nebraska’s defense.

Nevertheless, it is great to get a win on the board, and there were some positive takeaways.

On offense, Nebraska’s rushing attack led the way, as the Cornhuskers racked up 244 rushing yards. Meanwhile, quarterback Casey Thompson completed 14 out of 21 passes for 193 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception.

Without further ado, here are Nebraska’s offensive and defensive players of the week.

Nebraska’s ground game sparks first victory of the season

Nebraska records its first win of the 2022 season!

Nebraska notched the first win of the 2022 season as the Cornhuskers defeated their guests, the North Dakota Fightin’ Hawks, 38 to 17 on Saturday afternoon at Memorial Stadium. Anthony Grant led the way for the offense with 189 yards on 23 carries for two TDs and a long of 46 yards. Ajay Allen helped in the running attack by carrying the ball 11 times for 58 yards and one touchdown with a long of 14. No other Husker was in positive rushing yards. Casey Thompson was 14 of 21 passing for the afternoon with 193 yards, two TDs, and one INT. The most telling quote after the game was from head coach Scott Frost who said, “this team can be a great team. It’s not right now. That was my message to them.” If anyone thought that the coaching staff would allow the team to relax after their first win of the season, it’s clear Frost sent a muted message that there’s still work to do. And now the grind for Week 3’s preparation begins.

Offensive/Defensive Players of the Week from Nebraska’s Loss to Northwestern

Here are the Offensive/Defensive Players of the Week from Nebraska’s loss to Northwestern

The Nebraska Cornhuskers dropped their season opener against the Northwestern Wildcats 28-31.

The Cornhuskers held a 28-17 lead in the third quarter. However, a questionable onside kick call derailed their momentum and allowed the Wildcats to eventually regain the lead.

Unfortunately, quarterback Casey Thompson and Nebraska’s offense could not recapture their rhythm, and they failed to score any points in the fourth quarter.

The game and the onside kick call, in particular, have been heavily scrutinized, but there were some positive takeaways. A couple of players had standout performances. Without further ado, here are Nebraska’s offensive and defensive players of the week.

Former OKC assistant, Anthony Grant, named AP Coach of the Year

Grant led the Dayton Flyers to a 29-2 overall record and a final ranking of No. 3 in the Associated Press Top 25 poll.

Former Oklahoma City Thunder assistant coach, Anthony Grant, was named the Associated Press Coach of the Year earlier this week.

Grant led the University of Dayton to a 29-2 overall record, an Atlantic-10 regular-season championship, and a final ranking of No. 3 in the Associated Press Top 25, matching the program’s highest finish from 1956.

The Flyers earned the top seed in the A-10 conference tournament and were in line for a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament before both were canceled due to concerns stemming from the coronavirus pandemic.

Grant returned to his alma mater, where he played from 1983-87, in 2017 after spending two seasons in Oklahoma City on Billy Donovan’s staff.

His stint with the Thunder marked the fourth time that Grant had worked under Donovan, dating back to the mid-1990s at Marshall University.

Prior to coming on as an assistant in OKC in 2015, Grant served as an assistant under Donovan for 10 years at the University of Florida, where he helped lead the Gators to their first national championship in 2006. The program won its second title in 2007 with players that Grant had recruited prior to taking the head coaching job at Virginia Commonwealth University.
