UCLA women’s basketball moves to 12-0 with win in Bay Area over Creighton

Another win!

The UCLA Bruins women’s basketball team continued their winning ways in San Francisco Friday evening with a 70-41 win over Creighton in the Bay Area Women’s Classic.

There was no Lauren Betts for the Bruins but it was no problem, as UCLA won their second straight game without their junior center who is dealing with a minor lower body injury. Junior guard Kiki Rice picked up the slack, just as Betts did earlier this season when Rice was out with an injury. Rice scored a game-high 20 points on 8-13 shooting with five rebounds and four assists.

The 20 points was Rice’s second highest total this year, having scored 21 points against Hawaii earlier this month. Senior forward Angela Dugalic was the only other Bruin in double-figures with 13 points and 14 rebounds, helping step up in Betts’ absence. UCLA handled business on the boards, bringing in 59 while Creighton tracked down only 26. Other than Rice and Dugalic, no other Bruin had more than three baskets.

UCLA bullied Creighton in the opening quarter, winning the opening period 26-4. The Bruins’ defense was smothering the Bluejays on Friday, after allowing the four points in the first, UCLA allowed 19 points in the second before tightening back up by allowing eight and ten points in the second half.

At 12, UCLA has successfully dodged any pre-conference play losses, jumping back into Big Ten play next Sunday when Nebraska visits Pauley Pavilion for the Bruins’ first conference home game of the season.

UCLA remains unbeaten with 69-37 win over Cal Poly

The Bruins continue to win games.

The UCLA Bruins continued their perfect start to the 2024-2025 season on Monday with a 69-37 win over Cal Poly at home, as the Bruins moved to 11-0.

UCLA joins Georgia Tech, Tennessee, LSU, Maryland, Ohio State and Michigan State as schools from the Power Four conferences that are still unbeaten, with four of those teams coming from the Big Ten.

Monday’s game was a low-scoring affair, with the Mustangs 37 points being tied for the lowest amount the Bruins gave up this season and the 69 points being the least UCLA has scored in a game in North America this season, with the Bruins scoring just 66 points in their season-opener against Louisville in France.

Junior center Lauren Betts did not play Monday, missing the game with a lower body injury that doesn’t appear to be serious. With no Betts, three Bruins finished with 12 points which was the high mark for UCLA on Monday, with junior guard Londynn Jones, senior Angela Dugalic and junior forward Janiah Barker all finishing with a dozen.

The Bruins had one of their worst games of the season shooting the three ball, going 6-25 (24%) in the game, their second lowest three point percentage of the year, with their 3-16 (19%) performance in their win over Hawaii being the only worst percentage.

While UCLA didn’t have their sharpest shooting night, it was still better than what the Bruins defense did to the Mustangs, with Cal Poly shooting 26% from the field while turning the ball over 20 times. The Bruins are back in action on Friday in San Francisco as they’ll face Creighton to kick off the Bay Area Women’s Classic at 8:00p.m.

Long Beach State no match for No. 1 UCLA

An easy win this time.

The UCLA Bruins doubled up the score on the road against Long Beach State on Saturday with a 102-51 win, with Bruins’ head coach Cori Close setting the program all-time win record as she accrued her 297th win as UCLA’s head coach.

After Close was critical of her team in her record-tying win on Sunday against Washington, the Bruins came out with intensity and handled the Beach throughout the game. The rebounding issues were a thing of the past with UCLA holding a 51-22 advantage on the boards while five Bruins reached double-digit scoring.

Senior forward Angela Dugalic and junior center Lauren Betts paced the 10-0 Bruins with 22 points each. Betts picked up another double with 10 rebounds, three steals and three blocks to go along with her scoring output.

Junior guard Kiki Rice finished with 12 points and junior forward Gabriela Jaquez added 17 for the Bruins. Off the bench, junior forward Janiah Barker impressed with 19 points off 9-10 shooting and 10 rebounds, with six of those coming on the offensive board.

While junior guard Londynn Jones struggled with her shot, going 1-9 overall, she had a team-high nine assists and three steals to help the Bruins.

Only eight Bruins played in Saturday’s game, with no one playing less than 18 minutes in the win as Close shortened the rotation despite the lopsided score. Even while UCLA shot 56% from the field, they struggled from three, shooting only 27% on 22 attempts.

After the big win, UCLA will have a short turnaround as they’ll host Cal Poly in Los Angeles on Monday, with the team looking to move to 11-0 on the season.

Angela Dugalic’s Olympic run over with Team Serbia

What a run!

It was a great run, but it has come to an end. Angela Dugalic, UCLA’s forward on the women’s basketball team scored 14 points in 22 minutes, but it was not enough. Team Serbia was eliminated in the quarterfinals of the 2024 Olympic Women’s Basketball tournament.

Dugalic did not start, but played the third-most minutes, and took the most shots on the team. She was 6 for 12 from the field, including a pair of three point shots made. She added 6 rebounds and 2 assists to her 14 points.

The leading scorer for Serbia was Jovana Novic, with 17. Australia mostly led from start to finish, with a 48-32 lead at halftime, and 72-48 after three quarters.

Australia was the first to move to the Semi-Finals of the Olympics. They will play on Friday for a chance to get to the gold medal game.

Dugalic announced in April that she would be returning to UCLA for her fifth season with the Bruins. Head coach Cori Close is excited to have her back on campus soon, and ready for the 2024-2025 season.

It has been a great summer for 22-year-old Angela Dugalic. The former Maine West High School star has been playing with her country in the 2024 Olympics and is now 2-0.

Serbia downed China 81-59. Cugalic did not score in the game but was a key contributor for a team that outscored China 36-20 in the second half of the game. In the win in Game One, she had 4 rebounds and 3 assists in the win over Puerto Rico.

Dugalic will be starting her third season at UCLA and fifth overall this season. She had a solid season for Coach Close and the Bruins last season. She started 29 out of 30 games and scored nearly 9 points per game. She averaged nearly 24 minutes per game.

Team Serbia will now take on Spain on Saturday to finish up Group A play. Both teams will move to the quarterfinal, but the winner of the game will win Group A.

Angela Dugalic returning to UCLA for fifth year

UCLA Bruins women’s basketball got Angela Dugalic to return for a fifth year with the program.

The UCLA Bruins women’s basketball team fell to the LSU Tigers in the Sweet 16. That game had plenty of buzz, and the future is bright for Cori Close’s team after the loss.

Now, Angela Dugalic has announced her decision to return for a fifth year with the Bruins. She gave the news on an Instagram post on Friday with the caption that reads “Why not? Let’s run it back!”

Dugalic has been a big part of the UCLA roster and averaged 9 PPG with 6.6 rebounds this past season, With Charisma Osborne leaving, there could be more opportunity for players such as Dugalic.

She was a starter for the team and had four points with eight rebounds in the Sweet 16 loss but had nine points and seven boards in the Round of 64 win over California Baptist, where Lauren Betts sat out.

Dugalic returning is huge for UCLA.
