LSU women’s basketball dominates Georgia to advance to SEC Tournament semifinals

The Tigers are moving on in Greenville, South Carolina.

Georgia gave the No. 4 LSU women’s basketball team one of its toughest contests in the regular season, but the Tigers wouldn’t allow a repeat of that performance in the SEC Tournament.

No. 2-seeded LSU (28-1) dominated the seven-seeded Bulldogs (21-11) in the quarterfinal round on Friday, winning 83-66 to advance to the semifinal round, where they will take on the winner of No. 3-seeded Tennessee and No. 14-seeded Kentucky.

The win — which came after a lengthy weather delay due to a leaky roof at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena — also constituted coach Kim Mulkey’s first in the SEC Tournament as the Tigers’ coach.

LSU controlled this game throughout. It led by 10 after the first quarter, and though it only took an 11-point advantage to the locker room, a dominant third quarter in which the Tigers shot 10 of 15 and outscored UGA 27-14 essentially put the game out of reach.

It was a relatively quiet game for [autotag]Angel Reese[/autotag], who had 15 points but just six rebounds, marking only the second time this season she hasn’t recorded a double-double. In her stead, [autotag]Alexis Morris[/autotag] had a huge game with a team-high 28 points.

SEC Freshman of the Year [autotag]Flau’Jae Johnson[/autotag] scored 21 points.

It was an impressive performance for LSU, which shot 50% from the field as well as from behind the three-point line. The Tigers will hope that offensive prowess carries with them through the rest of the weekend in Greenville, South Carolina.

4 LSU players earn All-SEC women’s basketball postseason awards

The Tigers were featured heavily in the league’s end-of-season honors.

LSU just capped off arguably the best regular season in program history for its women’s basketball team, so it should come as no surprise that Tigers players dominated the SEC’s list of postseason award winners.

The superstar is [autotag]Angel Reese[/autotag], the transfer from Maryland who has emerged as one of the top players in the entire country. She earned both First Team All-SEC and SEC All-Defensive Team honors, while [autotag]Alexis Morris[/autotag] joined her on the First Team.

After a dominant true freshman season, [autotag]Flau’Jae Johnson[/autotag] was named the league’s Freshman of the Year, while both she and [autotag]Sa’Myah Smith[/autotag] were both included among the SEC All-Freshman Team.

The Tigers sit at 27-1 (15-1 SEC) and will look to secure a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament at this week’s SEC Tournament in Greenville, South Carolina. They open their run against either Georgia or Auburn on Friday.

Here’s a rundown of each player.

LSU’s Angel Reese selected as a Naismith Defensive Player of the Year semifinalist

Reese is one of 10 semifinalists for the national award.

[autotag]Angel Reese[/autotag] has been stacking up conference awards this season, but with the regular season in the books and the No. 5 LSU Tigers set to begin their postseason run, she may also be in line for some national discussions.

On Monday, Reese was named a semifinalist for the Naismith Defensive Player of the Year by the Atlanta Tipoff Club. She’s one of 10 semifinalists and is joined by fellow SEC athletes Brea Beal and Aliyah Boston, both of whom play for South Carolina.

Reese is also one of just three underclassmen among the semifinalists.

A sophomore transfer from Maryland, Reese has played a major role in the leap forward the Tigers took this winter. She averaged 23.7 points and 16 rebounds during the regular season, in addition to 1.5 blocks and 1.8 steals. She leads the team in all four of those metrics.

Reese’s defensive prowess is apparent from the moment you start watching this LSU team, and it’s no surprise she’s garnering national attention as the No. 5 Tigers finished the season 27-1.

Angel Reese continues to rack up SEC weekly awards, named league Player of the Week for 7th time

The SEC simply has no answer for Reese.

The SEC simply has no answer for [autotag]Angel Reese[/autotag].

The sophomore forward from Baltimore who transferred in this offseason from Maryland has been as impactful as any player in college basketball in the midst of a record-setting 2022-23 season.

After notching a pair of double-doubles this week (23 points and 18 rebounds at Vanderbilt, 23 points and 26 rebounds vs. Mississippi State) she’s been named the SEC Player of the Week for a record seventh time this season.

Averaging 23.7 points and 16 rebounds per game on the season, Reese notched her 27th double-double of the season in Sunday’s regular-season finale against Mississippi State, tying Sylvia Fowles’ program record. Sunday’s game was her fifth 20-point, 20-rebound game of the year, and she became the first SEC player to have two 26-rebound games in her career.

Reese and the rest of the Tigers will be in action this weekend at the SEC Tournament in Greenville, South Carolina, where two-seeded LSU will face the winner of No. 7 Georgia and No. 10 Auburn on Friday afternoon.

LSU women’s basketball beats Mississippi State to match program record 27 regular-season wins

The Tigers finished the regular season off in record-setting fashion.

LSU capped off what is now tied for the most prolific regular season in program history on Sunday night, winning its 27th game of the year against Mississippi State to match the 2004-05 team’s win total.

With the 74-59 win in front of a record-setting 15,721-person crowd at the PMAC, LSU finishes the season 27-1 (15-1 SEC) and will have a double bye as the No. 2 seed in the SEC Tournament this week.

Though the Bulldogs managed to keep it close for much of the game, they never led after taking a 6-4 advantage just over two minutes into the game. It wasn’t a great game offensively for LSU, which shot 40.9% from the field and missed all 14 of its three-point attempts.

Mississippi State shot at a higher clip and made four threes in this game, but foul trouble really doomed the Bulldogs in this game. They committed 21 fouls, and LSU was 20 of 27 from the charity stripe. The Tigers dominated on the inside, winning the rebounding battle by 22 and outrebounding MSU 21-3 on the offensive boards, which led to 24 second-chance points.

[autotag]Angel Reese[/autotag] had a 23-point, 26-rebound double-double — her 27th of the season, which matches the school record set by [autotag]Sylvia Fowles[/autotag]. In her final game at the PMAC on senior night, [autotag]Alexis Morris[/autotag] scored 23 points, which doesn’t include this called-off three-quarter court shot that she didn’t get off in time.

It counts in our hearts, though.

Forward [autotag]LaDazhia Williams[/autotag] also made a major impact in her final home game, scoring 16 points.

The Tigers will open their SEC Tournament run in Greenville, South Carolina, on Friday in the quarterfinals when they face the winner of No. 10-seeded Auburn and No. 7-seeded Georgia at 5 p.m. CT.

How to watch No. 5 LSU women’s basketball vs. Mississippi State in regular season finale

The Tigers will look to match their program record with their 27th regular-season win on Sunday.

The No. 5 LSU women’s basketball team will look to match the best regular-season record in program history as Kim Mulkey’s squad goes for its 27th win on Sunday evening against the Mississippi State Bulldogs.

It will be senior day for the Tigers (26-1, 14-1 SEC), and they will honor [autotag]Jasmine Carson[/autotag], [autotag]Alexis Morris[/autotag], [autotag]Emily Ward[/autotag] and [autotag]LaDazhia Williams[/autotag] at halftime of the game against MSU (20-8, 9-6 SEC).

“Senior day is coming up Saturday at five o’clock against maybe the hottest team in the SEC right now,” Mulkey said in a release. “They are really, really playing good to get off that bubble and get to the NCAA Tournament.”

LSU has already locked up the No. 2 seed at the SEC Tournament, though a South Carolina loss on Sunday would allow the team to grab a share of the conference title with a win. The Bulldogs, meanwhile, have won five of their last six and sit in a logjam in a tie for fifth in the league. A win would go a long way for both its conference seeding and NCAA Tournament hopes.

[autotag]Angel Reese[/autotag], meanwhile, will aim to match [autotag]Sylvia Fowles[/autotag]’ school record 27 double-doubles against the Bulldogs on Sunday. Here’s everything you need to know to follow this game, which tips off at 5 p.m. CT on the SEC Network.

LSU women’s basketball clinches 2nd in SEC with win over Vanderbilt

The Tigers won their third straight thanks to Angel Reese’s 26th double-double of the season.

The Tigers won their third-straight game on Thursday night as Kim Mulkey’s group took down Vanderbilt in Nashville 82-63 to secure a second-place finish in the SEC for the second-straight season.

LSU (26-1, 14-1 SEC) never trailed in this game. It jumped out to a 40-23 lead at halftime, and it held control throughout the final two quarters. The Tigers have struggled a bit defensively in recent outings, but Vanderbilt (12-17, 3-12 SEC) shot just 38% from the field in this game, though it did hit 12 threes.

The Commodores had no answer for [autotag]Angel Reese[/autotag], who scored 23 points with 18 rebounds to notch her 26th double-double of the season. [autotag]Alexis Morris[/autotag] also had a big game offensively, scoring 21 points. LSU really flexed its muscle in the paint, outscoring Vandy 46-16 there.

The Tigers will look to close out the regular season with a win — which would tie the program-best finish — in the season finale on Sunday when it returns to the PMAC to host Mississippi State.

Angel Reese sets record with 6th SEC Player of the Week award

Reese averaged 30.5 points and 18 rebounds in wins over Ole Miss and Florida this week.

[autotag]Angel Reese[/autotag] is in the midst of a historic campaign, and she added another accolade to the list on Tuesday.

The LSU women’s basketball sophomore forward was named the SEC Player of the Week after averaging 30.5 points and 18 rebounds in wins over Ole Miss — against whom she scored a career-high 36 points, the most for an LSU player since 1995 — and Florida. It’s the sixth time she’s received the award this season, setting an SEC record.

In the win against the Gators, she became the first SEC player to notch 25 points, 15 rebounds and five assists in a conference game in the last 20 years.

Reese — a Baltimore native who transferred in from Maryland this season —  is averaging 23.8 points and 15.5 rebounds in her first season with the Tigers. She has recorded a double-double in 25 of 26 games and is two away from tying Sylvia Fowles’ school record of 27 in a season.

Angel Reese, Jasmine Carson set records in LSU’s win over Florida

Reese and Carson impressed in Sunday’s big road win, scoring a combined 50 of LSU’s 90 points.

The LSU Tigers women’s basketball team strung together its second-straight win since a disappointing loss to South Carolina on Sunday, beating Florida on the road 90-79.

The Tigers got monster performances from a pair of standouts in [autotag]Angel Reese[/autotag] and [autotag]Jasmine Carson[/autotag], who each scored 25 points in a win that saw them walk away holding new records.

Reese is the first SEC player over the last 20 years to total 25 points, 15 rebounds and five assists in a conference game. Carson, meanwhile, tied the LSU school record for most made threes against a conference opponent with seven in the win on Sunday afternoon.

The Tigers remained No. 5 in the AP Poll this week after winning both their games against Ole Miss and the Gators. Coach [autotag]Kim Mulkey[/autotag] and her team return to the court on Thursday night when they travel to Nashville, Tennessee, to take on Vanderbilt.

LSU women’s basketball bounces back against Ole Miss

The Tigers got back on track with a win over a good Ole Miss team at home on Thursday night.

The No. 5 LSU women’s basketball team avoided letting one loss become two on Thursday night as it responded to a 24-point loss to top-ranked South Carolina with a 69-60 home win against Ole Miss.

This game was tight for much of the first half, and the Tigers (24-1, 12-1 SEC) only led by two at the break. But the Rebels (20-6, 9-4 SEC) fell behind to start the second half and trailed by nine at the end of the third quarter. LSU maintained that lead during the fourth quarter.

Despite being outshot 41.3%-32.8%, the Tigers got a huge game from forward [autotag]Angel Reese[/autotag], who notched a 36-point, 19-rebound double-double. Guard [autotag]Alexis Morris[/autotag] also scored in double figures with 15 points. Despite going just 3 of 18 from the field, she made the most of her opportunities from the charity stripe, going 9 of 10.

LSU survived one of its toughest remaining tests and will look to get another winning streak going when it travels to take on Florida on Sunday afternoon.
