Fans loved Caitlin Clark’s classy response to news of Angel Reese’s season-ending injury

Well said, Caitlin.

Chicago Sky rookie forward Angel Reese had been well into a historic rookie season, but on Saturday, she learned that her rookie year would be coming to an early end.

Reese took to Twitter to announce the news — her wrist injury would sideline her for the rest of the season — and it also meant a surprising end to the exciting Rookie of the Year battle between Reese and Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark.

On Sunday, Clark was asked about Reese’s injury. And despite their narrative-driven, on-court rivalry, Clark hated to see Reese’s season end due to injury. Clark offered words of encouragement for Reese in her Sunday press conference.

Angel Reese announces she will miss remainder of WNBA season with wrist injury

Angel Reese’s impressive rookie campaign has unfortunately come to an end.

While many LSU fans were either in Tiger Stadium or watching the Tigers take on Nicholls State from another venue, [autotag]Angel Reese[/autotag] dropped some huge news.

Reese took to her social media to announce that she will be out for the rest of the 2024 season due to a wrist injury. The injury occurred during the [autotag]Chicago Sky[/autotag]’s 92-78 victory over the Los Angeles Sparks on Friday.

The 2024 Rookie of the Year candidate had a great season before this injury. She had played in 34 games and made 34 starts. She averaged a double-double as she averaged 13.6 points per game and 13.1 rebounds per game.

Right now, the Sky are 12-22 and fighting for the No. 8 seed in the WNBA Playoffs. They hold the tiebreaker over the Sparks and are hanging on to the final playoff spot by a thread. Our thoughts and prayers are with Reese as we hope she recovers soon and can come back stronger than ever.

Angel Reese shocked the WNBA world by announcing that her rookie season is over

It looks like Angel Reese’s historic WNBA rookie season is over earlier than expected.

Chicago Sky rookie forward Angel Reese stunned the WNBA world by alluding that her first year in the big leagues has already come to a close.

Even though the Sky hold a 2024 WNBA playoff spot and still have six games left during the regular season, Reese alluded through her social media accounts on Saturday night that she was done playing for the season.

“What a year,” Reese wrote. “I never would have imagined the last bucket of my rookie season would be a 3 but maybe that was God saying give them a taste of what they will be seeing more of in Year 2.”

The Sky listed Reese as questionable for Sunday’s game against the Minnesota Lynx with a wrist injury sustained against the Los Angeles Sparks, and the team confirmed after Reese’s announcement that she was done for the season.

“After undergoing further medical evaluation after the September 6 game against Los Angeles, Angel Reese has been ruled out for the rest of the 2024 season with a wrist injury, the team announced today,” the Sky shared. “The team will provide medical updates later as needed.”

Outside of her historic double-double game streak, Reese set the WNBA rookie records for double-doubles and rebounds in a season last month. She was a contender for the league’s Rookie of the Year honor, alongside Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark.

With Reese having such a breakout year, her not being able to finish her rookie campaign is a pretty shocking development for the Sky and the WNBA as a whole.

Caitlin Clark should denounce ‘fans’ that have given Angel Reese death threats and stalked her

No one should feel comfortable with the brutal reality that Angel Reese has faced from some so-called fans of Caitlin Clark.

No one should feel comfortable with the brutal reality that Angel Reese has faced from some so-called fans of Caitlin Clark.

By now, you have likely heard about the growing rivalry between the top two rookies in the WNBA. They played each other during back-to-back NCAA women’s basketball tournaments and are two of the most exciting young stars in professional basketball who entered the league in the same draft class.

These players have an intense shared history with one another and they will continue to motivate each other to do better. While that obviously includes their performance on the court, it also plays a role with what they do off the court as well.

https://twitter.com/angelreeseshow/status/1831802309812301949

During a recent appearance on her “Unapologetically Angel” podcast, the Chicago Sky forward spoke about her relationship with Clark’s fans. Her comments did not paint a favorable picture (via CBS Sports):

“Caitlin is an amazing player and I’ve always thought she was an amazing player. We’ve been playing each other since high school,” the Chicago Sky forward said. “So I think it’s really just the fans — her fans, the Iowa fans, now the Indiana fans — that are, like, they ride for her and I respect that, respectfully, but sometimes it’s very disrespectful. I think there’s a lot of racism when it comes to it and I don’t believe she stands on any of that.”

The disrespect she is referring to has not just been a few mean social media comments. Reese said some people have gone much further than that.

“But when it comes to death threats, like, I’m talking about people have come down to my address, following me home, it’s come down to that,” she said. “Multiple occasions, people have made AI pictures of me naked, literally. They have sent it to my family members. My family members are, like, uncles are sending it to me, like, ‘Are you naked on Instagram?’ It sucks to see that and it’s really hard that I have to go through that, and now seeing other players even having to go through that.”

Reese added that she doesn’t believe Clark stands for any of these things, and Clark has spoken out broadly against racism and misogyny before.

CAITLIN CLARK: Fever star condemned her name being used to fuel racist and misogynist culture wars

But as she and Reese continue to push each other to do better on and off the floor, it is time that she takes that a step further.

While she may not have control over this unacceptable behavior toward Reese, now that these quotes were said, it would make sense for Clark to speak out against these so-called fans.

Clark should step up and say that no one should ever use her name to perpetrate violent acts against Reese like death threats, stalking, and creating deep fake nudes.

Her previous efforts to condemn racism in the past were commendable. But this new rebuke, if she were to do it, should be specific and strong.

Maybe this does not permanently solve the issue, but if pointing to specific examples of what Reese has said could prevent even a few people from doing this in the future, it will be worth it.

This may be scary for Clark to have to wade in on such a heavy subject. That, however, is part of the fame that has come with her WNBA success.

She may not be able to speak out against every example of poor behavior committed in her name. But these comments from Reese feel like a good entry point to say that anyone who is committing these acts in her name is not actually a fan of hers at all.

Angel Reese shares self-reminder about ‘grace’ after WNBA single-season rebounding record

Angel Reese owns the glass, but she’s also seemingly aware of the chatter surrounder her game.

Angel Reese owns a new WNBA record — most rebounds in a single season. Reese etched her name into the history books on Sunday with a wild 17-point and 19-rebound performance against the Minnesota Lynx.

Reese’s rebounding abilities have been the subject of lots of chatter in hoops circles because while she’s a force on the glass, her ability to finish at the rim has many questioning or even dismissing her stat lines.

The rookie forward is seemingly aware of the conversations about her game and shared a message on her social media to remind her to give herself some grace. The message also included a Bible verse about being restored and made strong by God after suffering.

After Angel broke the rebounding record held by Hall of Famer Sylvia Fowles, Fowles shared some kind words of encouragement for the young forward.

“Angel, you did that,” Fowles said. “Continue to be loud, bold, proud — true to yourself. Congratulations, Miss double-double queen.”

Angel Reese officially broke the WNBA rookie records for double-doubles *and* rebounds in a season

Angel Reese officially has a WNBA rookie record of her own.

Chicago Sky rookie forward Angel Reese has officially earned her place in WNBA history.

With her 23rd double-double performance on Friday night against Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever, Reese officially passed WNBA legend Tina Charles with the most double-doubles for a rookie in a single season.

She also passed Charles for the record of rebounds in a single season for a WNBA rookie with 399 during the game, making this an absolutely historic night for the LSU alumnus.

While the Sky didn’t get the victory over the visiting Fever, Reese’s remarkable, record-breaking game just underscores what a stellar season she’s having with Chicago.

She and Clark have both taken the league by storm, making themselves both key pillars for the league’s future. Reese’s double-double and rebound records are just such impressive achievements as she helps give the Sky a very bright future ahead.

Shaquille O’Neal said Angel Reese is ‘like a daughter’ to him as he attended his first Sky game this season

This is so cool to hear from Shaq about his relationship with Angel Reese.

Chicago Sky rookie forward Angel Reese is one of the WNBA’s brightest stars, and she had a major supporter in the Chicago crowd during Friday night’s game against Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever.

NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal has a close relationship with Reese going back to the latter’s days at LSU where he became one of her mentors, and the Los Angeles Lakers alumnus spoke glowingly about Reese as he attended her first WNBA game.

“[Angel is] like a daughter to me,” O’Neal shared, via the WNBA’s Twitter (X) account.

It’s so cool to see two basketball greats strike up such an impactful mentor-mentee relationship as Shaq and Reese have, as their LSU connection seems to have developed into something much more profound and special.

Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese really don’t seem all that concerned with winning WNBA Rookie of the Year

Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese really don’t seem all that worried about winning WNBA Rookie of the Year.

Both Indiana Fever rookie guard Caitlin Clark and Chicago Sky rookie forward Angel Reese are vying for the 2024 WNBA Rookie of the Year honor, but you won’t catch either of them putting it above the team.

Ahead of the superstar duo’s final regular season game in Chicago, Clark and Reese both indicated that they’re not too focused on winning Rookie of the Year as opposed to just making sure they win with their team.

“I think me and Angel would both give you the same answer,” Clark told reporters before the game, per IndySports‘ Chloe Peterson. “We don’t wake up and think about individual awards.”

Clark was right, as Reese shared the exact same sentiment.

“We don’t either care about the Rookie of the Year,” Reese told reporters, via the Chicago Tribune’s Julia Poe. “I think you guys have made it a big thing.”

Dallas Wings superstar Arike Ogunbowale hinted this week that she doesn’t buy the notion of a rivalry between the two rookie sensations, and it doesn’t seem to be quite the narrative that was assumed at the start of the season.

Clark will probably walk away with the honor after breaking so many WNBA records, but both of these players will have great WNBA careers regardless of how this award goes.

Angel Reese meeting a tiny Chicago Sky fan also named Angel is so incredibly wholesome

Little Angel met Big Angel, and the video is so good.

The Chicago Sky recently shared some behind-the-scenes footage of an interaction between a young fan named Angel and her favorite player, Angel Reese. Unsurprisingly, the video of Little Angel meeting Big Angel is too precious.

I’m always here for this kind of carrying-on, especially when so many good coincidences exist. For example, an Angel met another Angel. KNEE-SLAPPER. I’ll take it even further. A member of the Reese’s Pieces — the name of Reese’s fanbase — met the head Reese’s Cup while dressed in Reese’s Pieces-branded gear. DOUBLE KNEE-SLAPPER.

I make no apologies for my shenanigans, and I’m currently playing this on a loop. Little Angel taking a selfie with Big Angel and saying that meeting her was “very, very, very, very, very good” is the kind of wholesome WNBA content we need to see more of daily.

Arike Ogunbowale isn’t buying the Angel Reese-Caitlin Clark ‘rivalry’ narrative

Here’s why Arike Ogunbowale doesn’t think there’s an Angel Reese-Caitlin Clark rivalry.

Arike Ogunbowale isn’t here for the Angel ReeseCaitlin Clark rivalry narrative. The Dallas Wings star says it’s been media-driven.

The headlines have been filled with stories about Angel and Caitlin, their impact on the WNBA and the Rookie of the Year race all season long. Clark is an offensive powerhouse who lights up the court with electric logo 3-pointers and sweet assists. Reese isn’t as prolific of a scorer, but she is a double-double machine with a generational ability to rebound.

The differences between the two have generated so many narratives from so many corners of the internet. Everyone seems interested in giving an opinion about the pair of rookies. Here’s what Ogunbowale recently told MacKenzie Salmon of USA TODAY about the two young stars:

“I do think the Angel-Caitlin thing is funny. It’s just funny to me because they’re two totally different positions, and the media tries to, like, make them be, like, competitors. But it’s like — that’s a guard, and that’s a post.”

“So, at the end of the day, they never even guarded each other so. It’s not really a rivalry, but it’s just funny how people hyped it up. But I know both of them, and they both have respect for each other. So, it’s mostly the media…it’s always interesting to see what people have to say because they just be so wrong.”
