WATCH: Andy Dalton, DJ Chark silence Seahawks fans with 47-yard TD

The Panthers offense finally got themselves an explosive play thanks to Andy Dalton and DJ Chark.

How’s this for an explosive play?

Coming into Week 3, the Carolina Panthers were one of just two teams—along with the Las Vegas Raiders—not to record a passing play of at least 25 yards. Well, now there’s just one.

Quarterback Andy Dalton, starting in place of an injured Bryce Young, found wide receiver DJ Chark for a 47-yard touchdown in the team’s matchup against the Seattle Seahawks. The score, which was also the first end-zone visit of the afternoon for either team, helped give Carolina a 10-9 lead at the 4:54 mark of the second quarter.

That catch and run capped off an eight-play, 75-yard drive for what has been a struggling offense. Prior to the possession, the Panthers recorded all of 61 total yards over their first three touches.

Dalton, to that point, completed 11 of his 16 passing attempts for 130 yards and the touchdown—which was Chark’s first since Week 14 of the 2022 campaign.

Week 3 preview and prediction: Seahawks vs. Panthers

Can the Seahawks get above .500 for the first time this season?

It is Week 3 and the Seattle Seahawks are back home to face off against the Carolina Panthers. It isn’t any other ordinary home game for the Seahawks, it is a celebratory one. Seattle has chosen this Week 3 matchup to honor the 10th anniversary of their Super Bowl XLVIII championship winning team.

It is only fitting they selected the Panthers game as the time to celebrate, as it was Carolina who the Seahawks played in Week 1 of the 2013 season. Seattle claimed a hard-fought 12-7 victory over the Panthers on the road.

Sunday also marks the first time in franchise history the Seahawks will be wearing their white jerseys at home. The white jersey/blue pants combination is what the team wore when they obliterated the Denver Broncos 43-8 to hoist their first Lombardi Trophy.

However, don’t expect a similar Super Bowl-style blowout against this Panthers team. Carolina may be 0-2, but they hardly bottom feeders. In fact, this team marched into Lumen Field and clean Seattle’s clock in a 30-24 road upset.

Making things more complicated for the Seahawks is the fact backup Andy Dalton will be starting in place of the injured Bryce Young. For whatever reason, backup quarterbacks have given Seattle fits over the years under Pete Carroll, including last year when Dalton’s Saints beat the Seahawks.

This will be a legitimate test for Seattle’s run defense, who was ran over by Carolina to the tune of 223 yards on the ground last year. The Seahawks look improved in this department, but we’ll see how much shortly.

Prediction: Seahawks over Panthers 26-24

This won’t be easy for Seattle, but when are things ever easy for this team, especially against the Panthers? Dating back to 2012, eight of the last ten matchups between these two teams have been decided by a single score, including the last two, which were both identical 30-24 wins – split between them.

However, I do believe the Seahawks are finding their way after a major stumble in Week 1. Seattle’s offense is red hot following their explosive overtime win over the Lions in Week 2. While the defense still has work to do, but they are opportunistic. The pass rush will need to take advantage against the immobile Dalton to force a few more key turnovers.

The Seahawks are the better team, and they’re more desperate for a win to keep pace with the resurgent Rams and the juggernaut 49ers. If there was ever a day to show up for the 12th Man, it would be on the day to honor the franchise’s lone Lombardi.

Current series history: Seahawks lead 10-5 all time

  • Seattle: 8-4 regular season
  • Seattle: 2-1 postseason

Every starting QB in Carolina Panthers franchise history

Andy Dalton is set to become the 24th QB to ever start a game for the Carolina Panthers.

On Sept. 10, 2023, Bryce Young became the 23rd player to start a game as a Carolina Panthers quarterback. And unfortunately, an ankle injury to the rookie has gotten them to No. 24 just two weeks later.

So, with Andy Dalton on deck for Week 3, let’s look at every passer who has started under center for the franchise:

4 key matchups for Panthers vs. Seahawks in Week 3

Panthers WR Adam Thielen could have himself a prime matchup in Seattle on Sunday.

Now 0-2 on the season and down their No. 1 overall pick at quarterback, the Carolina Panthers face a huge amount of adversity heading into Week 3 against the Seattle Seahawks.

If Carolina wants to come away with their first win of the season, they will need to clamp down on a few key matchups:

Panthers officially rule out Bryce Young, Andy Dalton starting vs. Seahawks

Yup, it’s another backup QB game for the Seahawks

The news is official. After a week of speculating about the health of rookie quarterback Bryce Young, the Carolina Panthers have announced a decision: he’s out. This means backup Andy Dalton will start Week 3 against the Seattle Seahawks at Lumen Field.

This is not necessarily welcome news for the Seahawks. Yes, health-wise speaking, it is unfortunate the No. 1 pick of the 2023 NFL draft will not be playing. But on a deeper level, this means Seattle will have to contend with yet another backup quarterback.

Normally, other teams would rejoice at the thought. Not the 12th Man, who has had to watch their team repeatedly struggle against backup quarterbacks in shocking losing efforts.

Sunday will be somewhat of a double rematch when it comes to backup quarterbacks. Last year, the Seahawks lost to Andy Dalton’s Saints in New Orleans, and they lost to the Panthers led by Sam Darnold in Seattle.

Hopefully, both losses are avenged. But knowing the Seahawks’ struggles against backups, it won’t come easy.

Biggest storylines for Panthers vs. Seahawks in Week 3

The Panthers have a Red Rifle and, apparently, they’re not afraid to use it!

The Carolina Panthers will be heading into historically hostile territory on Sunday without the face of their franchise.

For that (and more) check out our biggest storylines for the Week 3 matchup against the Seattle Seahawks:

Seahawks fans are afraid of losing to another backup QB

The Seahawks have a strange history facing backup quarterbacks during the Pete Carroll era – and it’s not a good one.

The Seahawks won’t face the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 NFL draft this week, after all. Carolina quarterback Bryce Young has not practiced this week and all signs point to veteran backup Andy Dalton starting against Seattle in his place.

Normally a backup having to start over a top draft pick would be a good sign for the opponent. However, the Seahawks have a strange history facing backup quarterbacks during the Pete Carroll era – and it’s not a good one. Whether it’s Dalton or The Devil Himself Colt McCoy, backups have fared unusually well against this Seattle team in recent years. In fact, Dalton beat them just last season with the Saints.

Every game is unique, but there does seem to be a pattern that repeats in these games where they lose to backups and boring game manager type QBs. First, they play zone defense practically the entire game, they get dinked and dunked down the field every possession, they lose by a touchdown and then coach Pete Carroll blames it all on not running the ball enough.

Hopefully this time around is different. However, now instead of feeling confident heading into a home game against an inferior team, some Seahawks fans are getting anxious. Here’s what they’re sharing on social media following the news that Dalton will likely start over Young.

Bryce Young not expected to play in Week 3 vs. Seahawks

Panthers QB Bryce Young (ankle) is not expected to play in Week 3 against the Seahawks.

Bryce Young’s third NFL start is probably going to have to wait.

The Carolina Panthers rookie quarterback sat out Thursday’s practice due to an ankle injury—one he sustained during the Week 2 loss to the New Orleans Saints. Young, who was also listed as a non-participant in Wednesday’s walk-through, has now missed two straight team sessions.

That, per Darin Gantt of Panthers.com, means the 22-year-old is not expected to play on Sunday against the Seattle Seahawks. 13th-year veteran Andy Dalton, who took first-team reps this afternoon, would be the starter in Young’s place.

Dalton said the following of his preparation for the opportunity earlier in the day:

“It’s always nice because . . . I’ve had a certain way of operating, like, my whole career. And I think when you go from starting to being the backup, that’s one of the things that you miss.

“Scout team’s one thing. You’re lookin’ at a card and you’re runnin’ the other team’s offense. But when you get a chance to kinda take ownership of what you’re doing and to know how you want it to look and how you want it to feel and you actually get to execute it, that’s what makes football fun.”

Andy Dalton on possibly starting in Week 3: I’m not here to make this a competition

Panthers QB Andy Dalton is seemingly in line to take the spot start for Bryce Young in Week 3, and he knows his assignment.

Andy Dalton knows his assignment.

The 13th-year veteran is seemingly in line to take the Week 3 spot start for the Carolina Panthers and rookie Bryce Young, who will be missing practice on Thursday with an ankle injury. And before taking his place on the field, Dalton took it at the lectern—where he was asked if this week is more fun for him.

“For me? Obviously. Absolutely. Absolutely,” he replied with a laugh.

Dalton signed a two-year, $10 million deal with the Panthers this spring. That pact came with the impression that the 35-year-old would be backing up whichever rookie passer the team eventually drafted.

Nonetheless, it may be time for Dalton to make an impression on Sunday against the Seattle Seahawks . . . but not too much of one.

“My goal is to win,” he later added. “Especially here—this is Bryce’s thing. I’m not here to make this a competition, make this anything. I’m here to help the team.”
